I survived the "Home of the Throwed Rolls"
If you live in or around Missouri, you know what Lambert's is...a restaurant I shouldn't have been caught dead in, but had to go and celebrate loved one's birthday. The wait staff literally throws homemade, hot yeast rolls at you as you wave your arms in the air. OMG the smells! Not only that, they have what they call "pass arounds", where the waitstaff comes to your table with big buckets of fried okra, blackeyed peas, fried potatoes and macaroni/tomatoes and you can say "yes, please" and they'll dollop it onto your plate. AND on top of that, the place is all you can eat. Yikes! BUT...I survived!!! I'm so proud of me. I had smoked pork chops, green beans and a side salad. Had I gone there without the words of the wonderful posters on this site, I would have caved. But I kept hearing a certain mantra in my head "one cheat is the kiss of death" and it really kept me going.
Thanks all! |

Sikeston! We used to stop there when I was a kid all the time, in between my Mom's house in Memphis and my Dad's in Peoria.
Man, those throwed rolls would be horrifying to me these days. Good job! |

I'm impressed. Well done, Kim! You really faced that temptation down and should feel very proud of yourself.
My resolve is pretty strong, but the smell of fresh baked bread? That could be some serious trouble, right there. |

NanCat - I went to the one in Ozark near my home, but the Sikeston one is exactly the same. We stop there on our way to Georgia.
Thanks Peanutte! Yes, the smell was the worst thing to overcome. Nothing better than the smell of fresh baked bread, even if I know it'll kill me to eat it. |

eww, i didn't know that throwed rolls expanded to two locations. That's as scary as the Pillsbury Dough Boy in Ghostbusters!

Not only two locations in Missouri to make people fat and use bad grammar, but while vacationing in Florida, we passed one as well.
Oh, and Peanutte, you're dealing with the Ozarks for the grammar - we be hillbillies! Last edited by kimberino; 06-29-2009 at 07:19 PM.. |

Went there once on the way back home from Memphis when we lived in St. Louis. The rolls are amazingingly good, and you get a big ole mug of sweet tea to boot. MMMMM.

LOL, we have one in Alabama. I would have never made it past the throwed rolls and greasy fried potatoes. I only go once or twice a year and it is always a cheat day.

Fellow Missourian here! My husband just asked if we could go there....I was like, "really? really?" It just does not sound like a good idea.

Pepperette - good question! My MIL didn't really think they threw the rolls so she neglected to get her hands up - she caught one in the cleavage. I had to laugh because she is a bit "prim and proper" and they got her good.

Plenty of thin people eat there. It is a matter of passing up the throwed rolls or like many looking at it as an occasional treat and not turning into an eating machine for the entire week following one's visit.

Wow...........I'm impressed. That woulda been a hard thing to pass up. There is no such thing here in NY, in fact I've never even HEARD of that restaurant.
I think if a certain establishment or food is always around you or nearby (for me New York pizza) it's a little bit easier to say no to because you know if you really wanted to have it it's not impossible. It's when you wanna experience the novelty of something, for the first and maybe only time you'll ever get to, that it's super hard for me. Anyone else feel this way? Regardless - I can't even imagine how hard that was - The food sounds wonderful - What was the thing that made you so steadfast in your decision to not cave? I could use a few pointers for when I am in the same predicament. On Sunday I went to a Mexican restaurant far from my home with a group of people - The meal I ordered was mostly LC, yet I didn't say hold the rice, beans and fried plantains - and I sampled all 3 - all the while feeling not good about it as it didn't even taste as great as I thought it would. My only saving grace was that normally I would beat myself up and would have stopped for a desert pig out on the way home because I'd already blown it, but this time I forced myself to just have water and go to bed......I almost can't believe I did that. Sometimes we can be surprisingly strong and we need to give ourselves a pat on the back. B

i saw that place on the travel channel...
it was 10 of America's greatest pig out places. You have great strength of character to withstand the temptations, as u did. I would have caved... not right away, but after 1 half hour or so. I look forward some day to that famous 72 oz steak in Amarillo, Texas, before I leave this earth of your'n. Glad u had a good time without paying the PRICE. Love & Profits: FLATFERENGHI
