7g carb + 7g fiber = 0 net grams? (Sea veggies)

I have some Arame (sea vegetable) that has 7g of carbs and 7 grams of fiber per ser serving (1/2 cup - just not sure if its soaked or unsoaked).

So in general, if a food has just as much fiber as carbs does it mean it has zero net carbs? Should I follow that rule?

ETA: this is the product Eden Foods - Arame Scroll down for nutrition info.

Sounds like 0 net carbs to me.

One question though, what in the heck do you do with it? I'm pretty adventurous with food, so I'd give it a go if I knew how.

Thanks!

Well right now, I only really use sea veggies in soups, except for nori when I make wraps or Sushi out of.

I'm old school. For me, a carb is a carb. I don't make any adjustments for fiber content.

Good Luck,

That's kind of what I thought it'd be used for. Thanks for the info.

0 net carbs. It is 7 carbs but none of them will affect you b/c of the fiber.

I always minus fiber and sugar alochols from the actual carb count. I know a lot of people say a carb is a carb, but I am a net carb person.

I hear you. I wouldn't be able to eat if it wasn't for the net carbs since I only do 20/day. Though I dont usually go over 25 gross carbs a day, I need to have some room. I'm not an all-meat type person.

Good question.

I don't know the answer, but I don't net the carbs, especially for something that ends up being 0 carb when it started at 7g carbs. I know people say that those carbs don't count, because they are not impact carbs, but I disagree. Not everyone can net. I definitely can't. They DO impact me.

I don't know how true that is for all fiber. I take a hit with my BS from some foods that are low in net carbs but contain a fair amount of carbs overall (life flax meal.) From my understanding, some of that fiber ferments in the intestines and can give you back about half the carbs it originally had in energy.

Given what it is, I would count it as 0. I am leery of some things that are packaged as net carbs, because those are usually sugar alcohols and that can still affect you like a carb.....but this is different.

Good Luck,
Hello,
I was wondering how many carbs you have a day? What was your carb count when you first started out? How did you decide how many to have a day?

Thanks for your help.

Back when I was counting carbs, I always subtracted the fiber. But I avoid sugar alcohols.

I continue to shoot for 10-20 grms of carbs daily, aside from occasional slips............ Actually, when I periodically get off the wagon, I try to binge out on zero carb snacks like shrimp and sardines to minimize the damage..........

soak that arame for a good while and add some to salad. it makes great salad on it's own w a sesame type dressing or gomasio (sesame salt)...add some scallions or julliened carrot (if you eat it). this is one of the things left over from my macrobiotic days that is worth eating.

I agree with this one. It's also good with a sesame oil/ginger/rice vinegar/stevia (or whatever sweetener) dressing. Go, sea vegetables! They are fantastic for you! Arame is sort of tiny and chewy.

Probably, the net carbs are 0 on one serving, but it might be one of those where there is a tiny fraction of some kinda carb (.4 or somesuch) in each serving that wouldn't be counted on the label. But, since I'm assuming you can't put away a pound of arame (which I'd salute you for), I think you're safe counting it as 0.

dr atkins made 1 very important point in DANDR

not all carbs are metabolized the same way. this split the low carb m.o. into 2 camps basically; total carbs or net carbs. the answer??? whatever works for you. i follow DANDR myself. that is my choice. so 7 gr carbs less 7 gr fiber is zero net carbs. Love & Profits: FLATFERENGHI
