Dovelett, How's the Training Camp Going?
Hi, I've been so concerned about your lack of access to food for your special training that you mentioned a couple of weeks ago. Rather than find that thread I thought I'd ask how you're doing.
Let us know if you need any moral support girl!!! |

Oops sorry didn't see this! Thanks so much for asking!
My training workshop went GREAT actually! I ended up baking a flax meal banana bread (just banana extract, no bananas), a flax/zucchini/Parmesan flax foccacia, I packed Atkins bars but only ate 2, I bought some sausage and fried it up sort of like peperoni chips, and I had protein shakes, teas and SF koolaid with me. For breakfasts I'd have the banana bread, the other bread for snacks and sometimes lunch, but I found places to eat that I could ask for no rice or beans and just have chicken etc. We had a cookout one night and I just told the hosts not to count me in and that I would bring my own food since they were having pasta salad, potato salad and other such stuff. I brought ground beef (REAL ground beef! OMG I haven't had red meat in almost a year!!! Well ok maybe I have, there have been some mystery meat moments) and some green bell peppers and just ate that. Yeah I got strange looks, but whatever. The only snag that I ran into (which I expected) was the visit to my host families house. When we arrived in Africa, we lived with a family for 9 weeks. Since the training was only 10min from them I had to (and wanted to!) visit. My host mom started to pull out food for me, and even though I told her I wasn't hungry it's not appropriate to turn down food. She served a rice with beans and sausage dish, and I took a small amount and ate some. She also has a new store, so when a customer came in, I separated the sausage and beans from the rice and put the rice back in the bowl lol. Then when she came back I ate the beans and meat, and even served myself more so she knew I liked it (and repeated the separation every time a customer came). I think all in all I maybe ate less than 1/4c of rice; not what I wanted but all things considered, FAR better than I could have hoped!! At least I avoided the cookies, cakes, kuskus (a corn meal dish) and fijos (fried banana and corn meal fritters) that I was expecting to have thrust on me lol. It felt REALLY good to stay on plan. Hey, if I can do it, ANYONE can do it!!! |

Hey Dove your Birthday is the day before my wedding!!!
I think you did great staying on plan!!! 1/4 C. rice isn't gonna kill you or even make a difference in the long run. You prepared yourself, armed with delicious goodies! Fried banana fritters...OMG, that sounds HEAVENLY. |

Great job! I really respect you for honoring customs and dealing with it in a way that does not offend. Very commendable!
