Yup. Since I started doing Atkins 72, I can taste and smell everything.
A simple salad taste so good to me now. It's like the simple flavors intensify. I actually crave it. |

Yes ! My sense of smell has improved .
What surprised me was that things taste sweeter. I never liked sweetened things all that much and now find even unsweetened things very sweet. ![]() |

Mine got worse-- I couldn't smell the sulfur in natural gas (not good when you work in a lab with bunsen burners!) but at the same time, when in deep ketosis, my husband started smelling funny. I thought it was me but I asked him to smell me and he said I smelled fine, but when I smelled him... icky.
That was enough for me to bring myself out of ketosis. Now I need to slightly modify my WOE... |

yes, it's gross b/c I can smell garlic on anyone within a 10 foot proximity of me and it makes me so sick. It's really interesting b/c I always had a terrible sense of smell.

I never thought of that, I'll have to try and pay attention to it. My sense of taste has definitely improved and taste and smell are bound up together, so it probably has.
Oh great, now I'll be going around sniffing things all day. As if I'm not considered weird enough already! |

My sense of smell is now very intense, and it used to be terrible. If there is something unpleasant nearby, I don't enjoy this new sensitivity! But for good and delicious scents, it's wonderful.

Yes! I was at the grocery store the other day and went down the baking isle to get some splenda and oh my goodness did that isle smell sugary! I never noticed it before low carbing. I could smell all the real sugar, brown sugar, and I swear I could smell the chocolate chips too!

Wow, I hope this is a side effect I can enjoy. I'm just starting LC and can't wait to enjoy all these wonderful benefits I've been reading about.

My sense of smell has intensified also. Especially for sweets...I cannot be around things that are sweet. I actually start feeling sick when I go down the sugar aisle or I'm near the bakery. Just passing a Krispy Kreme when the "hot donuts now" sign is on gets me...and I'm in a car!
But on a brighter note...other things that I never noticed are also more intensified. I'm also amazed at how good a salad can be! DH laughs when I complain about salads in a restaurant if it's not the "right kind" of lettuce.

How long has it taken you all to realize your sense of smell has become more acute?
Is it something that returns rather quickily or is it well after the induction? Thanks cisrsb ************** M, 44, 5'5" 149lbs |

For me, it was several weeks into ketosis. The strangest thing that I can smell is the residue from dishwasher detergent. I have to rinse a glass well and dry it before drinking out of it. Doesn't bother me on a plate, because I don't typically put my nose near the plate... unless dinner is really, really delish, and there are no witnesses.

![]() I'll be there donating as well. Sometimes I just have to walk away. It's terrible. Don't they smell themselves? I understand you get sweaty and stinky, but some of the smells are just repulsive. |

my sense of smell is so tuned in to everything. it is amazing how many things smell bad. not just everyday odors but women who wear make up....i can smell the lipstick and foundation. if someone uses a strong soap like irish spring, etc.
if i'm around chemicals, i need a mask even if no one else can smell it. really, this is not always a blessing even if food tastes better. |
