Low Carb Emergency Kit

We all "know" it's a good idea to have a disaster kit, but one post years ago really saved me.

A lady in Florida had posted about how she had lost about 80 pounds - it took her over a year. The hurricanes hit and she didn't have any good non-perishable low carb stuff to eat.

The thing about a hurricane, I've discovered, is that it disrupts the food supply chain for weeks. It may be a month before you find fresh meat and veggies, and that was after a Category 2! One category 2.

Anyway, she didn't have a disaster kit/ emergency food supply... whatever you want to call it. After a hurricane, all you can find is basically crap. Frito lay is right in there with the trucks. The MRE's have literally hundreds of carb grams. All you can find are nonperishable junk foods.

She gained it all back in a few months. Please, she begged, GET A LOW CARB KIT ready. If she'd had some good non-perishable stuff she wouldn't have gained back the weight. Now she had to go off the crap, again, (reinduction! ) and look at another year of weight loss.

I tend to run a little paranoid, I used to live in earthquake country, and I've lived through a 7.1 earthquake, so I've always had a disaster kit. All I have to do if a hurricane threatens is run out and get my refills on the prescriptions. Thanks to that poster, I always have lots of low carb stuff. When everyone was freaking over Hurricane Ike, trying to get supplies, I was sitting in front of my TV with a nice cold drink in hand.

You never know what will happen, no matter where you live, so here's a look in my kit:
Sardines in olive oil - 10 cans - $1.50 each. I bought a few cans every time I went to the grocery store until I had 10 cans.

Turkey spam - I tried it for the first time after Hurricane Ike. It is very good and not fakey tasting. It just tastes like Turkey. The texture is a little soft with a good crunch when fried. It does have a little potato starch, about 2 grams per serving carbohydrate. I seem to be OK with it, so I have about 8-10 cans.

TVP - I got these from Walton Feed - they have various flavored dehydrated textured veggie protein. The texture is a little different but the flavors are good. They have some good low-carb dehydrated veggies too, so you can have something green on your plate. TVP - I'm including the flavored, like "Taco Bits" runs about 2-8 grams net carbs per serving. Not induction but not horrible, and the can goes a long way and is inexpensive. Don't open it until you need it. You can buy a sample kit to see if you like it. I was scared to death of it, but it's not bad and it didn't screw me up (I lost about 8 pounds in the 2 weeks after the hurricane).

Can opener - to open all those canned foods!

Cooking fats - I use lard, and I have plenty. Our gas utilities remained on during and after the hurricane, so I could cook on the stove.

If you use electricity to cook, you might want to consider buying a little propane stove to use outside, or you'll be very limited in what you can eat - only out of a can, cold.

Other canned meats you may like, I've seen tuna and roast beef even. Mayo can stay on a shelf after you open it, it is very acidic. If you have doubts you could go to the warehouse store (like Sam's club) and buy a case of packets.

I have found pouches of cooked sausage, shelf-stable for years, at the dollar store. Very easy to combine with my powdered eggs for breakfast!

Canned low carb veggies (mainly green beans, because they're the only thing I can eat when I'm getting over a migraine) - I have about a dozen cans.

Some veggie soups in case someone isn't feeling well, higher carb but OK.

Canned crap that my husband likes (macaroni and beef, etc). I threw 1-2 cans in the shopping cart everytime I went grocery shopping until I had a good stash.

Snack foods that you like - pork rinds, and my husband's favorite pretzel.

I put cases of Slimfast Low Carb in my kit, because I don't mind them warm and I drank my whole stash after the hurricane - at least 4-5 cases. They were the easiest thing I can. Pop a top. Take my medication (which must be taken 2x a day and with food!), good to go.

Paper plates and other disposable stuff, in case you don't have water or electricity.

Extra pet food. I have an extra 2 pounds of their fancy cat food. I was very glad I didn't have to watch my babies go hungry after the hurricane. It kept them nice and lively, so they could kill escaped sewer rats and bring them to MOMMY!

Extra medication - for everyone. Even extra basics like painkillers, and extra girl stuff too. Toilet paper! We have an extra 6 pack just for emergencies.

Batteries and radios. My husband loves his hand-crank radio. We both loved that our MP3 players run on AAA batteries, we had plenty of batteries and it was nice to listen to our music instead of the neighbor's generators.

Lights - flashlights, lanterns, etc. My husband is blind, he doesn't care, so I like the D-cell lanterns and the hand-crank flashlights. The dynamo ones, the hand crank style, are great because you never run out of power.

Extra batteries for your digital camera/cell phone. You won't be able to charge it!

Projects! When I was finishing up an afghan, in public, I got a lot of compliments. I told them I got a lot of work done after the hurricane. Several women told me they wished they'd had a craft project to work on afterwards. If you're into any kind of craft, you might want to pick up some yarn (for you knitters and crocheters), latch-hook kit, or cross stitch and stick it in your disaster kit. You'll have something fun to do while everyone else is bored.

Books and puzzle books are great, too.

I hope you find this useful and put a few extra items in your cart the next time you go to the store. I hope I never see another post of "I gained it back because I didn't prepare!"

Good idea! We don't get much in the way of power outages here, but it does happen from time to time, even if only for a few days at a time.

I'd add in some canned tuna and canned salmon, along with the sardines.

Oh and some whey protein powder, along with some coconut oil. A jar of almond butter and some nuts would be good too.

Hard cheese keeps for several days at room temperature, so the supply I keep on hand in the fridge would be just fine to toss in an emergency kit at the last minute.

Heather, thank you so much for posting this. I live in Texas too (tornados here) and we have an emergency kit. Even though I've been LC'ing for a while, it never even occured to me that the kit didn't have anything in it for me. Hopefully, we won't need it anytime soon, but I'm going to add some things to make it more LC friendly.

I really appreciate you posting this!!

Funny - made me remember that during the last round of hurricanes a couple of years back, power went out on our family property (several houses). Freezers and refrigerators were, unfortunately, well stocked with meats, cheese, vegetarian "meat" patties, and eggs. We fired up the propane grill and ate the most perishable things first - the whole family did almost zero carb for a few days!

EEEK!

That was the scary thing for me, I looked at my kit in March last year and I had nothing. Thankfully, I made it a priority and had plenty of shakes, meats, and canned veggies when Ike hit. It was great to lose weight as a result. Since we're in vending, with ready access to fattening crap, it could have gotten ugly real quick.

I want us all to have an easy a time as possible low-carbing. I have transportation issues, neither of us can drive, so I just got a couple cans of something every time I went to the store. When I find something DH loves, I get him extras for the kit.

I'll pray for us to all have a BORING year.

It's so funny that you would post this today ~ my BF was making fun of me just today because I had gone to the store last nite and bought lots of stuff we already have ~ I told him I was planning on buying a metal cabinet to put down in the cellar and filling it with "emergency supplies". Your list is definitely helpful.

This is a great list Heather thank you.

I'm going to be mindful of it next time I go shopping and start preparing, and hope that none of us ever need our emergency stash.

I also wanted to add PET FOOD for those who have pets.
My mom always has a full bag of dog food for her mastiff.
wouldn't it be awful to not be able to feed your pet?

Yeah, very good point.

I feed Wellness to my older male cat. He's got his own 2 pound stash in the emergency kit, along with canned food.

Thanks for bumping!

This is a great reminder for me! I need to do this; I am absolutely not ready for anything like an emergency. I take it for granted that I live in a city and we (Boston area) very rarely have things like this happen. But, you never know, and I definitely want to be able to stay on plan even in an emergency. And, the pet food....total DUH moment for me; yep I need to get extra bags/cans of dog/cat food for the kiddies.

Not just LC tips

Baby wipes to wash your hands in case you lose water too.

If you have babies, DIAPERS! After hurricanes here, "we have diapers" is always on the signs at churches/community centers offering supplies.

Cash. ATMs won't work and stores may not be able to take credit or debit cards.

Top off your gas tank when it gets down to 1/2 during hurricane season.

Fuel for the grill.

Nuts and nut butters. I was so sick of peanut butter after my last hurricane, that I didn't eat it for years.

Do all the laundry the day before the storm is due. You don't know when you'll have electricity and water again.

Great post ... I never would have thought of needing to plan for a disaster with lowcarb foods. Most people only think of the flashlights, meds, water and so forth. Here in Maine we don't usually have to worry about that kind of thing ... except in the winter. We do have power outages with some of our snow storms but in my area they don't usually last more than a day.

Nuts, nut butters, zero-carb protein powders, canned LC vegies, and even low-carb protein bars (when you're out of everything else) are a godsend. You do get tired of the tuna, sardines, salmon -- and the smell of fish -- after a while.

Don't forget waterproof pouches for your important documents -- put them in an emergency "grab" kit for critical documents, ID, photos, etc.

awesome post! I do have a ton of tuna stockpiled... I'm gonna have to try spam to see what it tastes like!

I live in an area of Canada where nothing too bad ever happens. we had a twister like ten years ago that messed up a drive-in movie screen (while it was showing the movie 'Twister'!) and sometimes it snows a lot. BUT you never know what could happen!

I'm planning to move up north soon where the nearest grocery store is a 5 hour drive away... YOU BET I will be stocking up and learning to prepare for emergencies.
