How much weight do you gain during your period?

I have been keeping track of my weight every day (almost) for the last four months and I get frustraded when I see that I go up 3 or 4 pounds arround my period time, sometimes 5. I go back down right after.

But I was curious, is it just me or it is "normal"?

Please share with me your experience. That way I can either feel normal or do something to avoid gaining all that weight.

my weight does not fluctuate during my time of month but I've heard many, many people say they see a gain.

If you know you're going to go up a few pounds and you know they're going to drop right off after then why the frustration? It's just water weight afterall and has absolutely nothing to do with fat loss, which is what we're all after right? People need to be reconditioned - we should be working towards fat loss not necessarily weight loss.

Typically 2-3 pounds - keep in mind that unless you binge on carbs and regain body fat, all the PMS gain is water. Sure, it's annoying, but not something to allow to get you down. A good way to deal is to get exercise every day, such as walking briskly for 20-30 minutes, which helps your circulation and may prevent water weight from hanging out in your body. Also, do not be tempted to restrict fluids - the less you drink, the more your body will hoard what it has.

It's just water weight. Don't worry about it! I get as many as 8, but it always goes away in a few days.

Some months only 2-3 pounds, others 5-7 pounds (which is mostly a food/salt reaction). When I remember to up my protein, I do much better.

about 2-3 pounds. it sucks =/


but it's great when your weight loss for that week and your pms water weight run alongside eachother.. cuz when you weigh yourself.. it looks like you lost 2 weeks worth of weight! lol.

I usually do not gain weight before or during TOM. But i usually do not lose weight that week, so I consider it a wasted week.

I gain anywhere from 5-10 lbs so I stay away from the scale during that time. I don't fret about it because I know it'll be gone in a week anyways

4-4 1/2 lbs...annoying. Sometimes it feels like my weight just starts on the downward trend, then it's ovulation, recovery, then TOM. If you track it though, you will realize that it is still on a downward trend over the long haul.

Don't get discouraged, just accept it and keep going. It's better to be moving forward than to get discouraged and stop or cheat and sabotage yourself.

Time will go by no matter what and we want to see progression after time goes by instead of the same old weight we've always been. (I live by my signature)

Hi, first post,
I hope you are all still out there and still willing to offer advice, I have been following a low carb high protein diet for 4 weeks now, this past week i havent lost anyting and my keytones have moved up to inbetween the trace and the third colour. I have been a little down about this, but reading all your posts i am hoping its the case for me, I know i havent been eating extra carbs and i know i havent cheated too.

fingers crossed in the next couple of days i will see a bit of a loss, in 3 weeks i have lost 12lbs.

I don't gain weight during my period, although from reading these boards it seems like most women do. Since it's water weight and it goes away when TOM is finished, I wouldn't worry about it. (Easy for me to say, I guess).

Normally about 5 lbs. Even though it comes right off, I still feel like it's a wasted week because I usually just break even when the water weight leaves. No additional loss. :-( The week following though, I tend to see a pretty decent loss, so I guess it probably does all even out in the end.

3-5 pounds. I've been charting my daily weight as well. However, last month I actually lost during my TOM but I wasn't eating even a full meal a day.

About 2-5 lbs for me. As far as the weight gain I don't care, but it is water weight that makes me achy so that part I hate. If I stick to eating right it is gone a day or two after I start, and if I've been really good another lb or two gone too. Even more irritating for me then the pain, is the fact that I should be too darn old to be dealing with TOM.

My body works backwards. I loss better the week before TOM and struggle the rest of the time. I don't have regular periods and don't get them at all if I don't low carb.

For me there is a 1-2 day "blip" around ovulation, then I'm back down, then I gain 1-2 lbs of water weight just a few days before TOM starts, then the cravings hit, my ankles retain water too, sometimes my fingers ... can go up to 5lbs sometimes (especially in our heat,) then about a day before I'm done it's gone again with sometimes a bit more to boot - depending how much I gave into the PMS cravings

On the up side, I used to retain up to 10 lbs of water during TOM when my kidneys were wonky, so this is a bonus for me that it's "only" 3-5 lbs even during 116 F summers

About 3 lbs but I also crave salt like the dickens so it probably contributes. I pee it all off the following week though and I also avoid weighing because it makes me PMS even more to see the scale!

aww thanks everyone, my TOM is very all over the place, 4 and a half yrs ago i had the Mirena coil inserted, my 'flow' eased some what, i suffer menorrhagia. I have noticed in the past couple of months my 'flow' is getting heavier and lasting longer, so i am hoping its cos the coil is due out in Jan, i will have it replaced, they say at 43yrs i am too young for a hysterectomy. This month my time has lasted around 9 days now, its fading, so hopefully in the next couple of days i will see a weight loss that i deserve for all my hard work...

Ask your doctor about having an ablasion. It was the best thing I ever did. I dont have a period or cramps but still have everything else. They basically blowtorch your uterus. It only takes a couple hours and I had to take 2 days off of work. I had it done 3 years ago. I still go through the other symptoms of TOM and I will gain 4 to 5 lbs of water weight. I will take it since I dont have the period.
