Pyruvate

I was thinking of taking a Pyruvate supplement.
Then I read it is a product of sugar metabolism. Um, that scared me. I am no ignorante but when I read the phrase "sugar metabolism" well... my reaction is

Anyone want to enlighten me as to why this is a good supplement to take???

Hi Maryposa! I'm no expert but I did get a 4.0 in my biochem course last quarter and it was aaaaaaaaaaalllllllll about sugar metabolism! Pyruvate is the end product of glycolysis, or the breakdown of glucose. The body breaks it down into a compound called acetyl-coA, which is then run through a bunch of other cycles, turned into a whole lot of energy, and eventually broken down into CO2.

Incidentally your body degrades fat into acetyl-coA to run the same set of reactions, so I would think that feeding your body more pyruvate would provide an alternate source of acetyl-coA, thereby taking away that need to get acetyl-coA from fat. And we don't want that! The whole point of lowcarbing is to deprive your body of carbs so that it's forced to get energy from fat.

As i said before, I'm nooooo expert at all but that's just my take on it. I googled pyruvate supplementation and I didn't see anything about it being compatible with LC diets, just about energy boosts (for the reasons I mentioned above--pyruvate is just extra fuel for cells).

Any experts, feel free to weigh in! I hope that was helpful, though.

Pyruvate put simply transports glucose to muscles. It's a compound found in the apple. Just had one with 2 string cheeses for lunch today!

I take 1000mg of Calcium Pyruvate daily. I have for about a year now and I think it has many health and weight loss benefits. I was actually seeing a nutritionist speciallising in low carb who recommended this.

I'm curious keikei what is the reasoning behind it possibly not supporting a low carb woe? It has not seemed to hinder me at all, I actually feel alot better when taking it.

Always something new to learn .

Pyruvate has been shown to be useful for weight loss if you take 30 to 60 GRAMS of it per day. At dosages lower than that no one can find any benefits.

I actually do not remember her full explanation. I was having so many problems at the time . When I made my first visit with her I was what I felt my last rope. I had become so carb sensitive/Intolerant from staying very low carb for so long I could not add any carbs back with out significant weight gain.

She basically reinducted me properly and aded some supplements. I had very low energy, had lost a lot of muscle, and she was worried about possible future osteoporosis issues. I was taking initially 2 tablets, 3 times a day and with in a week I started feeling a difference and I took that dose through out my first 30 lbs of weight loss then weaned down slowly to one a day. In weight loss mode I can feel a difference when I'm on it.

Before I posted this I went a goggled itto refresh my memory and it solidifies the reasoing why she put me on it. Seems to have many benefits.

Thanks... ya I googled it too but a lot of it talks about sugar metabolism and I am wondering if I want to help my sugar metabolism along. But if what it does is transport energy to muscles than ya, I can accept that Thanks for your replies!

I took calcium pyruvate a while ago. It was helpful but I took it in a very pure form and it was expensive!!!!!!

PS Yes I knew it was from apples, I did find information on it, the thing that I was focusing on here is what it means by "sugar metabolism".... so thanks for your explaination about transporting glucose to muscles.

Everyone correct me if I'm wrong...

If pyruvate is the part that helps transport the blood glucose into the muscle, then its not the SOURCE (ie carbohydrates vs fats) but the END RESULT (ie the broken down source into blood glucose) that the pyruvate helps.

So....if you are training your body through LC to burn the fat instead of the carbohydrate for fuel, and that fuel is the blood glucose that it is making from that fuel source...then pyruvate is just one of the end helpers?

Anyone remember Covert Bailey of "Fit or Fat"? I remember him speaking of ATP and pyruvate....but my head hurts from a fresh read of Dr Barry Sears "Toxic Fat" and he touches a LOT on the ATP cycle
