Who buys Walmart brand steaks? any good?

I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts, good bad or indifferent. They are relativly cheap but steak is such a subtle flavor the additives could screw it up.

Also, can you freeze steaks?

I freeze steak all the time. NO harm done. I also buy steaks at Wal-Mart and not being a meat aficionado I can tell you that they are fine. I don't buy the expensive ones and I try to buy when they are reduced. No problems so far......

I prefer a different market for my meats...only because Walmart meats, to me, don't have any kind of flavor.

I buy my meats at Kroger or Meijer. It is just a preference for me.

Check the packaging very carefully....I bought a pack of Ribeyes that looked really nice and fresh and cooked a couple of them. They were incredibly salty which made me suspicious since I don't cook with ANY salt. I checked the label and it said it had been injected with a sodium solution to enhance the "flavor". I left the other two in the refrigerator to see how long it would take before they turned "brown" and it was over two weeks. I've never bought meat from Walmart again.

Walmart employees here won't buy meat at Walmart. Does that tell you anything? Almost all ( I would say all ) their meat is injected with something to keep it looking fresh.

I can only afford Walmart steaks.

Sure, I'm bipolar and my husband's in a wheelchair now, but I'm sure they're fine.

Seriously, they aren't bad. I don't know what you're used to eating. IMO, they are WAY better than Foodtown.

I cook and then freeze them.

I Heather!

I've never bought steak from them (not much of a steak eater), but I will never buy pork from them because of those same weirdo solution things - definitely helps plump up the meat, makes it weigh more and therefore cost more, and then cooks right out.

I haven't had a problem -- BUT the Walmart up here (in Canada) sells the same brand steaks, etc. as the other grocery stores ... I have never had a problem with sodium injected varieties, etc.. and the kind I had was REALLY good (we just had it the other night...) BUT, I think your best bet will be to ask people from you area, etc. I think Canada Walmart is slightly different than the US one...

Hi BigPapa...
We've had and enjoyed their filet mignon, and we love their rib eyes.

We quit buying inexpensive cuts of steak many years ago (from anyone not just Walmart) mainly because we prefer other foods more and you have to work your tail off to make cheap cuts 'work'.

In my neck of the woods the steaks at Walmart are known for being really awful. I bought some about a year ago and they were just rubbery and bad. I will buy chicken and shrimp there (usually frozen...), but go to Winn-Dixie for steak and other meats...Right now Winn-Dixie has a whole ribeye roast (16 - 18lbs) for 3.99 a pound! That's only 50 more per poind than ground beef! Granted, you have to buy a LOT, but they cut it for you and you just can't beat the price. It will be the only meat I buy this week - but we will have steak now and then for a few months!

I don't buy the meat at Walmart--except for Tyson chicken...
several years ago Walmart switched their meat procedures---
they used to employ skilled butchers, but switched to pre-packaged, outsourced meats--
made a huge union uproar in Texas several years back--it took the NLRB to straighten it out--
and once they thought they had--
Walmart changed their meat marketing nationwide (to avoid hiring skilled texas butchers).....
anyway--the quality and prices have never been the same

I buy at the HEB grocery or Sam's (although it's affiliated with WalMart--they actually employ real butchers--who will cut the meat there the way you want it---or they do at the one I go to)--plus they can give you good tips on the meat they sell. Try asking your local WalMart employee in the meat dept. anything about what they sell and all they will basically tell you is yes they have it, or no, they don't......
However, since I haven't bought meat there in ages, I couldn't tell you how their new prime Angus line of meats is. It just all seems so pricey to me--I'd just as soon cook ground turkey or pork loin at home and have steaks when I go out to eat (I've never been a great steak chef, though so it's a waste of money for me to try....)

Steaks are much too expensive at Walmart here. I can get much better ones, without the added "solution", at a local grocery store for about half the price. Most of Walmart's meat seems overpriced to me. Ribeye steaks at Walmart are $10 pound and up. I get them at regular price for $6.99 pound or $4.99 pound on sale at Food Town and they actually taste good and have some fat on them. I'm also not paying for added water when I buy my meat at Food Town. Kroger's meat is mostly water and solutions too so I never buy it there anymore either.

Steaks at our Walmart are horrible, injected with nasty 'flavorings', (ie MSG); and I could tell when I ate some I bloated up like a blow fish...same story with their chicken.

I buy the rib eyes sometimes. They are good.
This past weekend we were at Sams and they had their rib eyes for a bit over $5 a lb so we got some and those are the best rib eyes I have ever had! I want to go back and see if they are still on sale. The woman who was doing the samples on them said that was about half of the price they usually are.

I like their chickens, I like Sams better tho.

And to the OP I do freeze steaks. I marinate them and stick them and the marinade into a freezer bag and put them in the freezer.

All WalMart meat and poultry (with the exception of ground beef) is injected with about a 10% solution of salt, water and other things. Leaving taste and chemical impurities aside, in general this means that WalMart's chicken and meat actually costs more on a pound of meat basis than local stores. The price per pound of meat and water is lower, but the price per pound of meat is higher.

OH YEAH I got in on that deal! I was sooo happy. One is 'coming to room temp' right now for DS. I will take a nibble but I am sure it will be lovely.

In FL...Walmart meat etc is pretty nasty. I don't bother. Weird that Sam's is OK.

Speaking of steaks.... I had THE most wonderful steak last night that I fried on the grill in olive oil.

Believe it or not it was FROZEN ..(I didnt think it would taaste good unless I defrosted it overnight).

First I tried defrosting it for a few minutes in my microwave then I just tossed it in the frying pan with some garlic and spices.

It really turned out suprisingly great! Anyone else have any hints about cooking a steak from frozen?

I won't buy conventional grocery store steaks so I don't eat them at all because I can't afford what I would want to eat......

we make "pretend poor man" steaks from 100% grass fed hamburger.......

I spent $19 on NY Strip from Walmart and it tasted like a damn pork chop. They put stuff on their steak to make it look red and juicy and it isn't. I will never, ever buy steak from Walmart again. Their hamburger is acceptable though.
