It happened in the produce aisle
So I went shopping today and was looking for the green skin avocados. They are the only ones in my area that are grown in the USA this time of the year.
Much to my dismay they only had the green skin ones that say 30% less fat. So I asked the produce guy if they had any of the green skin avocados in the back that were full fat instead of 30% less fat. Why they have to ruin a perfectly good fruit is beyond me. I can only imagine what he was thinking as this large woman was asking him for more fat. It makes me laugh just thinking about it. Does anyone have any information on the 30% less fat avocados? |

I dont know. I just checked fit day and the black skin ones had 12 grams of fat for 1/2 and the grreen had 22 for 1/2.
I always buy whichever are from the USA only and that varies at my store of course with spring coming they start selling the green ones that are specifically labeled 33% less fat as it that is a good thing. |

I've never eaten the green ones, only the dark, wrinkled ones. I thought these were the ones you should have......something about the fats being better or something. Why do you only look for the ones that are grown in U.S.? (other than the obvious patriotic thing)

Yes, the dark wrinkled ones. They are mostly black when I get them. Mine say they come from Chile when I buy them from Wal-Mart. They are a shade of dark green when not ripe, but turn black when ripe. They are much smaller than the green ones from FL. I thought we were only to get the California ones because they are the full fat kind. I could be wrong..........

That's exactly what I read. The ones from Florida are really bright green and stay that way. |

Somebody probably already said this, but: Florida avocados (the big, green, smoother ones) and California avocados are actually entirely different species. The Florida avocados are natually 30% lower in fat than the smaller, darker, wrinkly California variety. The grocery story was just labeling them "30% lower fat" to try to sell them to the low-fat crowd. They're normal Florida avocados, a little carbier than California ones.
Availability will depend partly upon where you live. Here in the midwest, California avocados are more common in the markets, most of the year. When I lived in Florida (duh) you almost never found the CA type in the market. |

I prefer the Haas too..but here in NY, in winter, they come from Central America and aren't any good for the most part- at least I'm not having any luck - for months now.

It's an outrage: the EPA says farmers can spread human waste sludge on their crops, regardless of what's in the sludge. And with the general public putting all sorts of toxic ingredients into their own bodies in terms of personal care products loaded with toxic chemicals and cancer-causing food additives like sodium nitrite, there's tremendous cause for concern. And this doesn't even mention the outrageous number of prescription drugs and drug chemicals being put into peoples' bodies that end up in the sewage sludge. This sludge has measurable levels of antidepressant drugs, for one thing. All this is insanity. It's bad enough that people fill their bodies with highly toxic food ingredients, but it's even worse that the EPA allows farmers to spread this on their crops and, ultimately, allow it right back into the food supply. Doesn't anybody realize that we are poisoning ourselves in this way? There's no concern for human health here: just pure profits. Anything that can make crops grow faster and improve yields is embraced by corporate farmers and government regulators, regardless of the health implications for the general public. Here is another article: Human waste used on San Joaquin crops causes stir They are doing this all over the world. Two years ago my town was going to sell human waste to farmers and farms in other counties but it wasnt profitable enough for them so they did not go through with the program. Another reason to grow your own vegetables. |

The big Florida ones are lower in fat, always have been. The little California/Mexico ones are higher in fat.

And perhaps even more to the point than the fat issue, the green ones are significantly higher in carbs!

I prefer Haas avocados but they do get expensive. I bought a small bottle of avocado oil in order to get the fat content.
