Men's Health Magazine!!

Okay, I am officially ADDICTED!

Yes, I'm a woman, but I've got to tell you, Men's Health is the BEST publication I've come across in a long time. Why?

1. Great workout tips
2. Great recipes!
3. In the few issues I've read so far, they emphasize protein and GOOD FATS, and aren't afraid to make a big deal out of it. I have an old issue from the summer (stole it from the gym...shhh...), and there's an article about cheese. I've only skimmed it so far, but it looks like they stress FULL FAT cheese, and how low fat cheese is a waste of time -- not just for trying to save some calories, but because the body does very well on the fat in cheese. I dunno...from what I've seen, I wouldn't say MH supports a low-carb lifestyle, but it certainly comes close. They also have a lot of articles about ditching sugar, limiting processed junk, eating high quality protein and fats, etc.
4. The articles that aren't about working out and eating right are very well-written and interesting. If I dare say so, they're intelligent, and that was a very pleasant surprise. (They have articles and essays about everything, not just fitness: better sex, being a better husband and father, traveling, politics, choosing wine...you name it. It's actually kind of fascinating. And it's always written in a casual way. That is, well-written, but "accessible" -- as in, easy to read and gain something from.

And this one's for Betty... ('cuz she's always going on about her love for steak )...

They have the most AMAZING ads for beef. (I think from the Cattleman's Beef Association...the people behind "Beef, it's what's for dinner.") I can't even describe them and do them justice...you've got to see them. One of them has mountains of rare, juicy beef, and it looks like a Grand Canyon of filet mignons...OMG, my mouth waters just looking at it.

I wish I could say more, but you've really just got to check it out for yourselves. Even if you're a woman, it's a GREAT magazine. There are very few things in there that are male-specific. Even the articles about being a father, or midlife crises, etc., are really more like human interest stories, that anyone can find something worthwhile in.

It's a really welcome change from the completely ditzy women's magazines out there. Sorry, but most women's mags seem to me the print version of a total airhead. (Fitness Rx for Women is an exception...I love that one, but even that has some stuff that I have to roll my eyes at and skip over.) Of course, MH has a few things here and there about how to look better, or land a date, but for some reason, the way they write about it doesn't strike me as anywhere NEAR as silly and demeaning as the way the women's mags do it. MH is *not* about hiding every flaw and faking perfection...it seems to be a lot more about working with what you have, and realizing from the get-go that pursuing perfection is a ridiculous waste of time.

Who else loves MH? Tell me I'm not crazy...

i subscribe to both MH and WH. i agree, 'men's health' is great. they had an article about diabetes a few issues back where they interviewed mary vernon, i remember. and one of their writers released a diet book that is a carb cycling plan (for weightlifters) that really emphasizes how healthy lc'ing is.

but 'women's health' is totally different - they are definitely on the low-fat, low-calorie side of things, unfortunately. and the workouts are kind of lame. but i did see an article about 'carb cravings' in their most recent issue that explained what causes them (blood sugar swings, etc). in a sidebar, it gave suggestions like lowfat chocolate icepops or something, to quell them.

And I'm a guy that loves Shape. I like their balance ball routines and more calisthenics and yoga approach.

But MH is good. I've twice used their year long weight training program where they give you a different set of exercises and a sets/reps schedule that varies every two months.

It's only mildly embarrassing with it's cover always talking about Great Sex! (Great Sex evidently involving capital letters and exclamation points).

I've seen this magazine before and I loved it too .. I just forget about it until you mentioned it, GR!!! Thanks, sweetie!

PS ... why is it considered NORMAL and men are encouraged to load up on healthy foods chock full of saturated fats, but women are told to do LOWFAT ?? Is this yet another SEX BIAS against women that they are frowned upon for eating PROTEIN and FAT?? Ladies, we have our work cut out for us here !!!

Very unfair. It's unladylike to have a steak. We're meant to have skinless grilled chicken and a salad with low fat dressing.

Heh, in the past, when trying to sell male friends or colleages on the Atkins I've played up that it's a "manly" diet. Steaks, bacon, burgers. They don't have to nibble "rabbit food" and rice cakes like girlies.

Yeah, you are so right ... its maddening! Even Nutrisystem for Men is always telling the guys that they offer "real food for REAL GUYS" ... and what is it ? POT ROAST, BURGERS.............."

Makes me mad enough to order a porterhouse next time I go out ! And I dare 'em to put that puppy down in front of my DH, too!

WOW! What an insightful article, thank you so much for posting this! I am going to run downstairs at lunch and buy a copy of the magazine and subscribe right away. I've read this magazine while at my hair salon but never thought of subscribing, DH will love it and so will I. Thanks again!

(Diabetes is in my family and I am hypolgycemic which is why I started exercising years ago and why I started LC-ing last summer so this is so beneficial to me.)
