What is the correct wieght

So many different ideas and articles. How do we know what goal weight to strive for? I could say 130 since I have been there at this height of 5 feet 5 in, but I am now 40 and confused. Can I get some advice please?

The real goal should be to improve your health. Eat the RIGHT foods in the RIGHT amounts and let your body determine its own goal based on how you feel.

Your health is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more important than a number on a scale (which of course will fluctuate NORMALLY)...

That's my opinion anyhow....

I say set a temporary goal and see how you feel when you get there. You can always adjust and move it up or down.

There is no "correct weight". You can use the BMI as a guideline range and adjust as you lose weight. See if you feel comfortable, how your body feels and looks, what your lab tests are, how fit you are, if you feel you need to lose more to feel better or gain some back, etc.

take a look at this link, it has various different ways of calculating your weight

Better Ideal Weight Body Calculations

i put in my original weight and it shows me what people that weight would like to be and i am already below that ... mind u if i put in my current weight its not so good lol

everyone is so different that its hard to say what u SHOULD weigh .. i am your height but a bit older and i know i am happy at 147, that maybe isnt attainable for some or for others they want to be way below that

Nice! Like you - I put in my starting weight and I'm below what they say too! Finally! Something good!

I also weigh 20 lbs less than my drivers license says I do!

This is pretty close. My doc helped me set a goal weight of 150 when I was at 287 lbs. I called it goal at 160-I am 5'6" and have long legs & arm (just a tad longer than my husband) with broad shoulders and large breasts . I looked and felt great at 160 and my doc said the same thing and that if I lost more I might start looking a little too thin. So it's YMMV according to how you feel and your particular body structure. The above calculator read 155 for me so that's pretty realistic.

I think your goal weight should be where you feel your best and you can easily maintain without killing yourself with your diet/exercise progam.

I'd like to get to 118-120 lbs (bec I was there for 10 years) but will probably maintain around 123-126 lbs bec I have more lean muscle now than I have ever had in the past 10+ years.

I had an RNY gastric bypass and didn't specifically follow lc. High protein, low fat dairy and lots of fruit helped me get down.

Hmm. What is a healthy weight?

Hmmm..... What is a healthy height?

These are difficult questions. Probably because they are malformed questions.

The plain fact is that your health is not necessarily related to your weight. Yes, if you are very overweight, you are likely less healthy than someone who is closer to a "normal" weight. But that is a gross oversimplification.

I believe that as you get in the "range" of normal weight there are more appropriate markers of health. In particular, bodyfat % is probably a much better indicator of health than weight. For a man, get your body fat to about 15% and for women 25% and you will be in a very healthy range. This does not mean that you should be stick thin, but that you should have a good amount of lean body mass and muscle.

Also, if you want to look good, bodyfat % will be a much more useful indicator.

In the case of the OP, her BMI is 28. About the same as mine. I would argue that she is already in a "normal" range and should really worry about body fat % and basically just ignore her weight.

its kinda interesting that when i weighed 262 the peopls choice was to be 181 and i thought that was a good weight to be tho would be hard to get to

now i am around 150 the peoples choice is 137... i actually did weigh less than that last year but looked horrible so gained 10 back to be 147 and feel quite happy there (gained a few over chrimbo tho )

the lower u are the lower the peoples choice weight is despite u arent changing your height so just goes to show we are never happy!!

You know...just for fun, I put in 97 lbs (because at my height, that's the lowest I can go according to the BMI charts without being considered underweight) and you know what the ideal weight was? 102 lbs. The number went up rather than going down.

I think an ideal weight should be the number at which you can feel happy and healthy and easily maintain-without having to go to drastic measures of starving to stay there. Ain't worth starving to stay at a lower number.

It's hard to know what is "ideal" until you get closer to it! My original goal was too low for me. I bought a body fat analysis scale - not one of the best, but enough that I can track my progress close enough to know that my lean mass is somewhere about 117. Before that, I had set my goal at 135, but I'm not certain I'm willing to shoot for 13% BF. I feel like 140 to 145 is reasonable & healthy for me. I have been at 128 as a young adult, and you could count my every rib.
