Rant on Thanksgiving denial

I am writing this post today because I am spiraling into a depression and if I dont get this out, I am afraid that I will lose hold on the progress I am already making.

My story goes this way: I had planned a small cheat for the Thanksgiving holiday. I had planned to eat very low carb and only have a piece of pumpkin pie - only one and only on Thanksgiving. That way my ketosis would have rebounded by Monday. I even ruined a perfectly good pie by trying to make it sugar free so the pie I had planned for was for not. I denied myself stuffing and sweet potatoes and pound cake all for the sake of committment. My husband who happens to be doing this with me ate two - count them - two huge slabs of peanut butter pound cake. On our weekly weigh-in which occurred on Monday my husband lost 1 lb. I gained 7. What is up with that !!! We ate the same foods with the exception of one evening, my mother made a buffalo chicken dip (made with mostly cream cheese) and I did have two of Tablespoons of that with some low carb/no sugar crackers. They were 6 carbs for 13 crackers. That was all the carbs I had.

I drank a ton of SF Kool-Aid (trying to make the switch to all water but it is hard to break the soda habit) and he only drinks soda - a lot of them.

My issue is that I denied myself a lot and only had a huge gain to account for it. My husband denied himself nothing and he lost weight and even had a 2 lb loss today on top of it. Im not slighting him. Im so pround and happy that he is seeing results. My problem is that I am discouraged because I didnt have this kind results. I was sooooooo good. Better than I had even anticipated being and I got nothing but added weight for it.

I didnt post this as a pity party. For those of you who want to call me a "waaaaammmmbulance" and make snarky unpleasant comments, please dont. This post is for all those other people out there who had the same thing happen. I know how you feel. I would love to hear how you cope with it. Obviously, hiding my head under the covers and crying aren't going to do the job.

I'm afraid this will probably be the case on your entire weight loss journey... but at least you get to reap the benefits as your man gets hotter and hotter. Even if its at a slightly faster pace then you. Also please keep in mind (I know its hard) that what you gained is WATER. It will come right back off. Hang in there.

Please don't compare yourself to your hubby, or anyone else for that matter - YOUR body may react totally differently to exactly the same input (as you can plainly see!) so just make note of what's going on with YOU. Stay the course and the results will come - may be slower than someone else (especially if that someone is MALE) and may take a while but you'll be GAINING HEALTH and in the long run - that's what you're after!

I totally understand. I am up 5 lbs over the last several weeks and other than more fruit then usual I have not gone off plan.
I feel myself fighting the depression that comes along with weight gain because I know if I fall into that trap I will be back up the rest of my 80 lost in no time at all.

Men seem to get the breaks where gaining/losing weight are concerned. I would say based on what you ate that you are simply retaining water. Just up your water and that will soon leave and maybe take a friend or two along with it. Hang in there....

Don't let this temporary gain get the best of you and ruin your hard work thus far. This is a process and we learn by making some mistakes. I have fallen a few times myself over the last year, but the important thing is to not quit; pick yourself up and move on. I went back to induction this week after staying totally LC over Thanksgiving BUT gaining due to overeating LC treats. I agree with the other posters- do NOT compare yourself to anyone else. This is your journey. You can do it

Two pieces of advice:

1. Don't "cheat" again. Cheating means this is a diet. Embrace low carb as a permanent lifestyle. There is no "denial." There isn't "I can't eat this/that." There is only "I *DON'T* eat this or that." "I denied myself this/that" denotes an attitude of entitlement. We're not entitled to anything in this life. But if we want to reap the benefits of fitness and health from this lifestyle, we are OBLIGATED to be consistent and to accept it, not as an unbearable yoke, but simply as a fact of life. "Just this once" is a slippery slope. One bite leads to one meal which turns into a week and then stretches to a whole year.

2. Stay away from the scale. Measure. Go by clothes. Go by how you feel. Keep exercising and eating clean.

Klingonbabe, I totally know what you are saying. I have been on that slope for 2 years thus the reason why I am on this lifestyle change trail. When I was on atkins the last time, I was so burned out that I said "I will just go off during Christmas/New Years" but when the time came to get back with the program, I just couldnt do it. But I was not thinking in terms of lifestyle, I was in diet mode.

What you said rings a bell for me. I hadnt really thought about it that way. If I am really in this for the lifestyle change then I have to stop thinking in terms of "diet". Its about making better choices for me. I really appreciate what you said and I intend to take it to heart. Thanks so much.

Yep - slippery slope - that's why I don't do it - because my name would be on this post instead of yours!

And, because his BODY is different than yours. It's not yours. YOU CANNOT compare your body to his or mine or, your sisters and your daughters. It is your temple and yours only.

Only feed it good stuff. And, it is a way of life - a way of eating to embrace not go on or off of........there will always be an occassion to be tempted by food.......make a plan, to stay on PLAN.

good luck

baby, you have hormones that he does not. Your weight is most certainly water weight and you're allowing one lesson to bring you down. From experience, I can say "DONT" let it ruin you. Pull up your boot straps and keep on keepin on.
Congratulations for sticking to your original plan which showed a great deal of restraint. It was a piece of pumpkin pie not stuffing, sweet potato pie, and the rest of the junk! That 7lbs. will be gone in no time.

And, he will not get away with that every time so tell him not to get used to those results.

Next time you need to make a dessert, the pumpkin cheesecake recipes are the easiest as well, the healthiest. Here's my recipe:

2 8oz. containers whipped cream cheese
2 cans organic pumpkin
2 eggs
3/4 cup (I blend stevia, erithrytol and xylitol to my taste preference)
bake 40 minutes on convection at 350

always practice prior to your event for success.

Ok, now for some beverage advice.....get off that kool aid girlfriend! That coloring is yucky.
how about some nice fruit flavored herbal teas iced instead?

Let me send you a big HUGGGGGGGGG over the internet!

You did very well to plan for a single piece of pie and stay lowcarb otherwise.. Congrats!!

Don't feel frustrated. Your body is hanging onto water for some reason - hormones or extra salt. I bet you will see a nice whoosh coming up soon! Don't let the disappointment keep you from staying committed to a healthy way of eating! You can do this, and you WILL see results soon!

I really equate sugar with rat poison in my brain. Addictive rat poison.

I never think "I wish I could have some rat poison". It works. I encounter a whole lot of diabetics going to dialysis, blind diabetics, amputee diabetics, etc, every day, so I've got lots of motivation.

Also, men are totally different from women. You can't compare yourself to anyone but you.

Are you measuring every day? I have actually gone up in scale weight, but down in measurements.

Totally Agree!

I had a totally LC Thanksgiving and was still up 3 pounds the next day. Why? SODIUM. Yeah, I made LC stuffing with lots of spices/salts ... and the scale proved it. Did I panic? No. I knew I didn't eat 10,500 extra calories .. it was all SALT. Two days later .. POOF .. gone. Fluctuations happen.

Keep on keepin' on .. it will pay off ! YOU CAN DO IT !

Betty

i'm totally there with you sweetie - i did the SAME EXACT THING - only allowed myself ONE piece of pie. and i definitely paid for it on the scale -- buuuuuut, i have to agree that most of it was water weight. that pie was good, but it wasn't 5lbs good! i'm back down to pre-thanksgiving weight after eating very clean and working out a little longer this week (i just added ten minutes to my cardio routine)- oh, and also drinking LOTS of water. just keep a water bottle by you at all times - and sip on it all day long most of all, keep up the great work!!!

Hi Butterfly... I think by posting this you are coping very well! And it is upsetting. But still you did great during the holiday because you still ate really well and kept the carbs low. Just keep doing the best you can and it will be alright.

I ate low carb and didn't drink but maybe 3 glasses of wine over 4 days of company, family meals with alot of wine drinking (by others), etc. and I never overate and I gained 4 lbs! I did take a few bites of my husband's chinese food on Sunday night but that was the only thing that passed my lips that wasn't low carb, I didn't even eat low carb stuffing I made on Thanksgiving or left overs, cuz that was higher in carbs than what I had been eating.
Anyways I still haven't gotten down to my pre Thanksgiving weight, still up a lb and 1/2 and have been at induction levels for almost 3 days, so if it was just water wouldn't it be gone by now?

It is very frustrating... I know just how you feel.

Thank you for your responses

I want to thank everyone who posted responses to my rant. It was what I needed to hear. It was words that I already knew in my mind but needed to hear it from someone else. I also just needed to get it off my chest and not keep it bottled up inside which never bodes well for me. It is also nice to have advise on how to handle it from the "pro's".

I'm glad you're feeling better and I totally know where you are coming from. I've been bouncing between the same 2-3lbs for probably a couple months. My boyfriend? He's lost 5 pounds. And he wasn't even fat. He's now 6 feet tall and 165lbs, down from 170. So yeah, I get that frustration.
