How quickly did your blood pressure go down on Atkins?

Would some of you please share your experience of lowering your high blood pressure with "Atkins"? Would you tell me how fast it worked for you and if you are still on Atkins and how you feel now? And how soon were you able to get off medication? Did any of you quit the medication immediately when starting Atkins? Thank you so much?

Sue.

It took me 3 months after I started taking the meds to go off them. I also started going to Jazzercise and was doing Protein Power during that time. I worked closely with my doctor to get off the meds.

Carollkay and Gr82bthin.........

Thanks for sharing. Did and/or do either of you include fruit in your diet and which ones and how much?

I included fruit in small amounts, mostly berries (frozen and fresh strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries) and an apple every now and then. I used the berries in my breakfast shake and sometimes had them in the evening with cream. In the summer I had a few peaches and some red grapes after lunch.

By small amounts I mean half a cup. Apples and peaches were a medium size.

On an occasional apple for me. Like once a month.

My b/p started going down noticeably after the first couple of months. I was off my b/p meds within about 7 or 8 months. But it went back up when I quit low-carb and went to just gluten-free. I'm back on my b/p meds again, and it doesn't want to to go down now the way it did when I went on low-carb for the first time.

Thank you ladies for your input. I also posted today in "Other Plans" under the thread about "Julia Ross" and her book "The Diet Cure". I'm afraid I have been yo-yo dieting all my life and now I am paying for it. So many things to weigh in my mind. I am reading her book now and am hoping it too will help me. I'm not sure yet what she says about the effect of fruit on blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Btw, I have also read all of Atkins' books. I have them all and refer to them often. I am just having a very hard time knowing who truly has the answers now. I hope more of you will post here about your experience with lowering your blood pressure. Thanks again so much for your help.

Sue.

My weight loss did not help my bp (bummer)
I have a family history of high bp on both sides. With that said. I know it has helped with other health issues.

I am not overweight but I get high blood pressure anyway...although my "b*tch meter" has been lower overall, I still love my propranolol and have no intention of giving it up as a BP med. Do you own an old fashion blood pressure cuff and are you monitoring your levels (i.e. at rest, and then when you are upset or angry, and when you are physically active)?

Fruit messes up people who are prone to insulin resistance, period. Its maybe got some good vitamins in it but for diabetics fruit is always gonna be bad news, in my opinion....I only say that because I can eat it like junk food.

I am not on Atkins but am on low carbs. My blood pressure was lower within a week using my at home bp machine. I have since tested once in while and it still remains low.

Oh, I want to add that I have lost very little weight compared to the Atkins people. It must be the insulin production for me.

I too have a family hisotry and have been on BP meds since I was 32. I will be 57 in February. The first time I did Atkins I lost about 80 pounds but it really didn't affect my blood pressure much. But! I was still smoking off and on and I drank Diet Coke by the gallons. This time around is very different. I no longer smoke at all, don't drink soft drinks of any kind and have only lost about 40 pounds or so. When I started back on Atkins in June 2007 I was taking Avalide 300/12.5, Verapamil 240 MG twice a day, Toporol 25 mg twice a day, AND Quinipril 20 mg once a day. All to control my crazy blood pressure. Going off Atkins for a short time had wreaked havoc on my body and health! I had a heart attack and was dangerousloy close to having to take medication for my blood sugar. I'm very happy to say today that I take the half dose of Avalide
(150/12.5) once a day and that is it!! My BP stays between 115 and 120 over about 70. I'm sure this is a result of a combination of things but I'm convinced beyond a shadow of doubt that the biggest reason it is so good and stable now is I don't have those wild blood sugar and insulin swings going on.
