I'm new and question about hunger and low-carb, high-protein diets

Hello everybody: I am new, and i have a question about hunger. Well the thing is that i am new in the low-carb world of dieting. I used to follow a diet lower in fat and higher in fruits and vegetables of about 80 to 100 grams of carbohydrates a day. Now i have been able to lower my carbohydratges to about 40 to 60 grams a day.

However yesterday night after my high protein, low carb dinner, i felt so hungry that i had to snack chicken at night. I know that we have to watch carbohydrates, but it is also very important to control calorie intake. I think i over ate yesterday night, and woke up a bit bloated.

My main question is: are diets low in carbohydrates good to control appetite? Because don't you think that when diets lack fiber from fruits and vegetables we tend to get hungrier?

That's the beauty of ketosis my friend I'll let someone more knowledgable explain the science though! Since I started following Atkins my stomach hasn't rumbled even once.. and lost quite a lot...

Good morning,

I eat between 10-15 grams carbs a day, 100+ grams protein, 130+ grams of fat a day, and eat about 1800 cals a day.

I set the time for every 4-5 hours so I make sure that I eat something.

My carbs are fresh organic leafy grean veggies, and the protein is good whole organic protein, and the fats are things like organic butter, evoc, lard, tallow, organic cream, and assorted organic cheeses. With some non-organic things thrown in as I slowly clean out my pantry.

As I said earlier, if I don't set the timer, I don't realize that I need to eat. I've gone 18 hours on a busy day, and not eaten and never felt hungry.

It's called ketosis - your body switches from burning carbohydrates for fuel into burning fat for fuel.

I'll never go back to high carb again!

Have you read the Atkins book?? It really will help you understand everything about a low carb way of eating and how it effects your body.

HELLO: and thanks for your reply. So you actually mean that fats and proteins are good hunger-killers? In other words by switching from a diet higher in carbohydrates to a diet lower in carbohydrates, but higher in fats and proteins, my hunger-levels will be controlled a lot better than doing a conventional, traditional low-fat, higher carb diet?

Thats exactly what we're saying!! Fats and protein are slow burning fuel. It takes a while for them to digest so you stay full/satisfied for longer. Carbs are like gasoline.....fast to burn and you have to keep putting in more and more sooner and sooner to feel satisfied.

That's exactly what we're saying! And more importantly- living.

It takes a commitment - you won't get results by bouncing between low carb and high carb. And it takes 2-4 days for your body to switch over. During that time your body will detox from carbs and sugar and you may feel like you have the flu - it's normal and will pass and you'll be amazed at the low carb fueled you!

It really should be low carb, High Fat. You only need enough protein to do everyday body repair, and to make supplemental glucose for energy.

If you increase your fat you should feel less hungry. You won't get that effect from increasing protein. In fact you may end up feeling more hungry if you base most of your nutrition on lean protein. Snacking on chicken is not as effective as snacking on cream cheese or macadamia nuts (neither of which are allowed on Atkins Diet Induction, but allowed on fat fasting)

people who are allowed to have fat in their reducing diets tend to stay compliant longer than those who try to stick to low fat options.

Induction is the first two weeks during which time you're limited on what you eat.

After that, you start adding additional foods into your eating in a prescribed order while learning how many carbs you can eat and loose while not being hungry.

I think 40-60 grams a day is low carb, not not LOW CARB, if that makes sense. Maybe it only makes sense to me

Anyways my advice to you is to not try to "wing" it and do it on your own. You haven't listed a plan and since you eat 40-60 grams a day I assume you're not doing Atkins. Pick one, I love Atkins personally but you can see people here follow a variety of different plans and anyone can be successfull on any plan as long as they work it. Read the book that goes with whatever plan you choose. And follow it exactly as written, at least until you get a good feel for it. I would advise that no matter what you try, you do a few weeks of an "induction" type phase... lower carbohydrates than what you're eating now, I think it will really help you to get that hunger suppression you're looking for. If you do end up going the Atkins route, don't be too worried about overeating the first week, eat until you're full, if you're hungry, EAT. You'll balance yourself out after a week or so and naturally your calories will lower themselves. DON'T make yourself miserable or hungry!

HELLO AND THANX: Your education about low carb diet is impecable and right indeed !!

And you hit the nail !! I think you are so *correct*, when you said that high protein diet might even trigger and increase hunger. So i think i will make a few arangements. I will decrease my protein-intake a bit, and increase my fat-intake a little bit, in order to do it the right way. And let me give you an example of why eating high-protein increases hunger just like eating high-carb. Last night i had a pancake made with soy protein powder and whey protein powder and some eggs. It had like 80 grams of protein. After i ate it, i still felt real hungry.

So again, i will decrease my protein-intake and increase my fat-intake (keeping calorie intake about the same)

Welcome to the board! Which low-carb program are you attempting, and have you read the book for it? I know it's tempting to wing it and figure it out as you go along (I attempted that myself a decade ago & didn't lose an ounce in a month), but I urge you to please read the book that corresponds with the program you're doing. It will eliminate a lot of unnecessary malarkey. Good luck!

One way to keep yourself from going crazy is to let someone else do the thinking for you. When people say to read the book or pick a plan, they are telling you that someone else already figured out for you and even though they vary widely each plan will bring you success IF you follow it as it was designed. That means you may not have the expected success if you start with one then switch to another then wing it then go back. It's better to go with the directions and follow through, that way if a plan is not right for your you can look back and know exactly why and what you should change.

Good luck with your changes, let's see if your hunger decreases. I'm going to make some coconut oil chocolate bark now. Lots of fat! Yum!

I have found that when I start L/C in the beginning(about three days or so) when my body is whinning for carbs I can eat and be hungry soon after but after ketosis hits then it stops and the energy comes and so on. L/C works for me and is the only thing that works but of course to keep it off most of us know who dont make it a WOE it comes right back! You will do fine just has to adjust to what works for you, this board is a great place to visit several times a day it is a life saver for me!!
