Want to try some vegetarian meals, but concerned about out of control appetite!!
I'd like to try to add some vegetarain meals to my routine, but.... I have a large appetite and know from past experience that when I start to add too many grains, pasta, etc., my cravings get OUT OF CONTROL.
Would appreciate any feedback and suggestions from semi veg low carbers. |

I think it depends on what you mean by vegetarian. Avoiding red meat is easy, but I think cutting out all poulty, seafood and eggs can be problematic on low-carb.

LOL! Jezzie ...
![]() I do not eat grains or much beans. I eat as a lacto-ovo vegetarian and eat fish only a few times a month. Quiche Casseroles made with eggs, cheese, soy (sub fake "meat" for hamburger in Linda Sue's casseroles), Soy protein meat replacements - like veggie burgers, vegetarian sausage patties, etc. As far as carbs .. I eat mor carbs from vegetables than the typical Atkins-ite - but not from beans and grains. If you want to eat some veg lc foods, you absolutely can and still be on induction or lower-rung OWL. hth! |

I don't know how successful I'll be trying semi vegetarian, I do love my meats.... but, that being said. I think more variety is the cornerstone of a lifetime WOE. Over my lifetime, I have cut out various meats and find that when I "think" about where the meat comes from, I can no longer eat it. I like dairy and eggs and plan on keeping them part of my daily food intake. I would like to give up the beef, pork, and minimize the amount of poultry. I am not a big seafood person. I like shellfish, scallops, etc., but not too much fish (tuna is OK, but has to be buried in mayo, etc.)
The other reason for considering this change is my husband. He has a family history of high cholesterol, etc. He will not give up his pretzels, cereals, grains......so I know if I make some vegetarian meals, this will help him, too. Besides, he will not cook for himself, so he has no choice!! ![]() Wish me luck and keep the links and thoughts coming!! Thanks everyone!

Why don't you just pick a plan that allows some of those good carbs - like South Beach. You don't seem to have a plan that you are working from ..
The type of vegetarian meals I eat would do your husband no good if he eats high (refined) carbs. They have as much "fat" as any of the meaty ones. If you are trying to help both of you, I'd just switch to brown rice, whole wheat pasta, etc etc for him and continue your usual lc meals with the grain addition for him. LC can be done vegetarian if one wishes to do so. One does not have to eat high carb to eat as a vegetarian. I lost 100+ pounds doing lc. |

Keeping red meat out of Atkins is pretty easy. I had 1/2 pound of burger last week, and no other red meat, and that was completely without even trying.
If you are eating seafood, dairy, eggs and poultry there are still a ton of options available to you. Red meat in our society is really just two things, beef and pork. When you think of how many types of veggies and other protein / fat sources there are losing 2 things really doesn't seem to matter much. I'm guessing you are cutting red meat out for the animals sake. On Atkins we usually get our fats, even saturated ones, more from other sources than our red meats. If your hubbie is living on carbs, cutting out meat may not be a good move for him. He needs protein from somewhere. If he wants to go the high carb / low fat route lean meat would be the way to go. I know pasta has quite a bit of protein, but I'm not sure about the quality of the protein it provides. What essential amino acids it has. I have to agree with TaDa about picking a plan. When you just make up an lc diet you usually don't get nearly as good results as with a plan. Last edited by berries&cream : 09-22-2008 at 09:59 PM. |

As a person who was a binge/purger, to say I had a large appetite is like saying Britney Spears has made a few bad choices!
I encourage you to deal with that trait- work on eating small, rich meals. Higher fat is what I mean. Nut butters, real butter, sour cream, cheese, full fat greek yogurts. After you eat that smaller meal, make yourself wait - so many of us simply do not give our minds time to reister that we ate and have had enough. If you truly perceive hunger after a half hour, you can eat more - again, small higher fat items. You can also sip hot broth or teas. Best of luck. I went semi-veg for about five years and fought that satiety issue. I now realize that animal proteins help me feel satisfied longer. |
