Newbie Alert!! Hi everyone!!

Hi everyone! My name is Sarah. I'm new to the low carb WOE and trying to sift my way through the tons of info on here!! I'm trying to lose weight while nursing my 7 month old son (he's exclusively breastfed) so as much as I'd love to go through induction on Atkins I'm right now just working on cutting my carb intake by half or more. I've spent the last 4 months counting calories and using Sparkpeople and I've noticed I've been eating anywhere from 200-300 (somedays more!) carbs per day! Plus I've gotten addicted to a show on BBC America called You are what you eat and while I don't agree with her about fat consumption I do like her low/no carb approach. So here I am day three of carb cutting and I think I'm doing well! My first day I had a lot of trouble and ended up binging on carbs, but yesterday I did really well (52g) and was satified! Today I'm at 44g for the day and doing well. I have been having a few headaches which I assume is from the cut in sugar intake? If any other moms who breastfeed/fed and did/do low carb have any tips or help I would appreciate it!!

You don't have to do induction. A really good book to read is Natural Health and Weight Loss by Barry Groves.

You are doing AWESOME great job and welcome to LCF!!

it will get easier as you go.. stay hydrated and rested (LOL I know how easy that is NOT with a nursing baby at any age LOL)

You might like to read this information on the Weston Price website, there are a few things mentioned you might want to consider (like adding CLO and coconut oil to your menu..) Like i had said in another thread, we only get one chance to do this, and it is not only about our weight BUT it is about the nourishment of our babies.

Diet for Pregnant and Nursing Mothers

You are a lucky mom to know the benefits of low carb in any stage of life, including nursing! Do the best you can for both of you, and enjoy this special time in your lives.

Welcome to LCF! From what I've read going moderate LC during breast feeding and even pregnancy is very healthy! Best of luck, hope to hear more from you.

Hi, Sarah.....Welcome!

I started Atkins when my youngest was about 10 months old (she was just starting solids then). I cut some carbs down like you did and then after I felt comfortable with that jumped into induction. Everything has been A-Ok, although different people and different babies will have different reactions. I am still nursing my 16 month old and have lost 30 lbs. since I started LC in March. I think you're doing great and will continue to do great.

Definitely check out the WAP link that Prozak put up above. Very valuable info. As far as CLO being affordable, I've heard of people going in together to buy Radiant Life CLO as you get a quantity discount and it's one of the best brands out there (supposedly!). If you're looking for rock bottom prices, you might try Swanson Vitamins. I love their products and their prices. As far as coconut oil, I get mine through my co-op at a really decent price ($20 for 54 oz). Are there any co-ops around you? You can buy a huge bucket at a good price from Tropical Traditions if you can save up enough for a one time expense.

Trying to think of other breastfeeding specific tips.....hmmmm....Just make sure you're eating lots of good fats like salmon, coconut, etc. Fat is your friend. It's your baby's friend, too.

Anyway, glad to see you here. I love "meeting" other breastfeeding moms.

Thanks B!! I love "meeting" other BF mommas too! We tried DS on solids and I think its the reason he's cranky and not sleeping so we are holding off trying again for a while. Thats why Im working on get my nutrition intake in check so he's getting the best!!
