Cooking for the first time in my life...

So yea, I'm 29 years old, and I just recently started "cooking" meals, per se. Most of the stuff I made before was prepackaged, such as Hamburger Helper, soup, TV dinners, etc. Just this past week, I have started actually cutting up vegetables and sauteeing them, as well as buying meats such as cube steak, chicken breasts, etc. I feel like a different person, as silly as that may sound. lol. I am actually looking forward to being able to create my own meals, for the first time in my life. I attribute this change to my Low Carb WOE, and for this, I am thankful.

I'm only a year older than you, and I too have recently started REALLY cooking.... well, within the last six months or so anyway. I love cooking! Why did I not do this sooner??

"Real" cooking is one of my favorite things about this WOE. I've always loved to cook, and low carb certainly hasn't changed that. When you start really getting into it, you'll see there's no limit to what you can make, even when you just stick to meat & veggies in a stir fry, but then, when you start branching out, the possibilities are endless.

Someone already suggested Linda Sue's site, which is incredible, but check out the recipe room here, too. Everything under the sun!

Yup me too. Well kinda. I used to be an experimental and enthusiastic cook who wowed all my college companions with my mad skillz. Then, about five years ago my relationship with food got really out of wack. I started eating out tons, gaining a lot of weight and could no longer enjoy cooking as I began to binge eat unhealthy foods.

With this WOE one of the first things I had to do was stop eating out so much and start planning meals. I lost 30 pounds eating stuff like boiled eggs and broiled, naked chicken breasts, then I gained back 10 pounds by going right off plan mainly because I was so bored of the food.

Now I'm back and losing very slowly (but surely) and cooking planned meals that are getting rave reviews from friends and family alike. I'm using fresh ingredients, and healthy herbs and condiments and really enjoying it. I consider it to be a side benefit of this WOE. In the last 24 hours I have cooked a gourmet version of Crackslaw, and slow roasted chicken with wild mushrooms and herbs, olive oil and tomatoes. MMMMMM!

Nice to be back to basics and cooking like iz all growed up!

Good for you. You wont be sorry. Much healthier and much less sodium if nothing else. Also, though buying more protein and less carbs makes for a higher grocery bill, i feel like you make up for that by not buying all those silly packaged things that are also very expensive. I come home with far less cardboard and plastic packaging than i used to.

That's great! I love to cook and it's my "destresser" at the end of my day. I still cook simply (nothing super fancy) but it's great to sit down to a meal you know is healty and what's in it

In addition to Linda's you might also check on FoodNetwork.com -- it's FoodTVs website. It's a great place to search recipes. If you want salmon, just type it in and you'll have lots to look though. Also allrecipes.com. Both have sections for reviews so you can get input and changes others have made.

Jenni - it's funny you say that! I was at the grocery yesterday thinking how unfull (is that a word??) my cart looked compared the cart in the next lane brimming over with boxes of stuff. Meat, veggies, dairy and cat food don't take up much room!

That's wonderful! I really enjoy (being the control freak I am) being able to control what goes into our food.

You're doing great.

We don't eat out like we use to since I started l/cing almost 9 months ago. My family misses their Thursday night all-you-can-eat wings!

It does not sound silly at all! It is a journey, this life. You are the same age as my DD's who are fairly new to the cooking game, too. They have kids, so scratch-cooking for a family is way cheaper and generally healthier than what they did before.

It's fun, and in this day & age of Food Porn network, it is cutting edge and exciting all of the time. I have cooked all my life and I am hearing and seeing terms and methods I have never seen in food prep/service.
