Reacting to carbs after staying on plan for awhile...

Has anyone else tried to have a carb up (high carb, low fat) day and experienced the worst "distress" down there? I can't even be around people today, gah!

Been LCing since August 2007, and wanted to change things up a bit. Now I'm in pain! I ate mainly fruits (sweet ones--pineapple, grapes, two apples, an orange), veggies (some starchy ones--carrots, chick peas), a bit of cous cous and quinoa (for the first time ever!), rolled oats, some tofu (just for fun), sprouted grain bread, dates, and honey today. Still experiencing slashing pain in my tummy. Did I do it wrong?

Sounds like you may have developed an intolerance for grains, specifically wheat. That very thing happened to me after a few years in Atkins maintenance. I hadn't had any grains in so long, my body couldn't handle them. Occasionally now I will try a grain, and I end up doubled over with stomach cramps.

Oh, you said that, Betty! Maybe our bodies really do "lose" the enzymes to digest them. Great, I just wasted $$ on sprouted grain bread and oats! Grr...

Sounds like you went way overboard, girlfriend! If you did all that on the same day - no wonder your poor tummy is roiling - it's not used to all that fiber and bloat-producing, water-sucking stuff! Not to mention the sugars....

I ate 1/3 cup of steel cut oats for breakfast one day last week and felt horrid most of the day and was UP 5 pounds the next morning - due to the water my body held onto to process those things. No more for me.

I think if you maybe did one or two of the things you mentioned in a day you'd be OK but I think you just overloaded your system!

I agree with Char overkill-especially if you normally do gluten free.

LOL, guess I did overdo it Char! Kinda humorous when you put it that way. Precisely WHY I never eat those things.

Good to know that the steel cut oatmeal caused you to bloat. The morning's gonna be fun!

I agree about the grains. Soy products also give me monster gas pains.

i agree too about the grains...

i went off plan pretty bad last week...one pancake, 1/2 arbys bun, rice, 1/2 bk bun, but the real killer was 1 serving steel cut oats on friday. i am still suffering...

i CAN tolerate sprouted grains in small amounts.

You poor thing! Hope the pain passes soon!

Perhaps some ACV would assist?

I usually don't have any actual painful side effects but when I have a high carb day it does make me gassy and also constipated.

Ugh! Wheat. Gets me every time, so now I just don't. If I have a carb up day ( rarely, usually if I'm staying with friends) I'll have fruit,( I love a slice of melon and some rolled up ham..yum) carrot, and maybe a spud or two....cannot resist a roasty. But if I eat wheat! Oh the PAIN!!!!! and the horrible itchy neck rash!
Get better soon

You know how you feel sick on days 3 and 4 of induction? It works for going off low-carb too. Same thing, body has to start burning a new fuel, and it takes a bit to get things going. The low-carbers brain runs on ketones. You start eating lots of carbs and it has to switch fuels again. The rest of your body has to take steps as well.

Also, the bacteria in your gut are used to eating your low-carb foods. They are not the same populations of bacteria in a high carb eating persons gut, so they may make more gas when you start eating carbs. Just like your body is adjusting to a new fuel source, the bacteria in your gut are adjusting also!

The switch over is a bit hard on us, so best not to switch too often!
