Blood Pressure

My blood pressure today is 175/96. Has anyone had success in bringing their blood pressure down with their eating? I take blood pressure medicine - but I really need to lose weight. My health needs to be a priority but it always seems to take the back seat with everything else going on in my life. Help

Losing weight from 287 to 160 totally stopped my high blood pressure and GERD. Take it one day at a time and plan your meals.

Thanks for the advice. Your right, one day at a time. Again, thanks

I was on like 3 blood pressure meds, and now no longer need them after my weight loss. If the cause of your high blood pressure is weight then losing weight will help. I have also heard that cardio excercise also helps lower it.

Good luck!!

Oh yes, Poochie, getting some of the weight off can really help with the BP. I was on 3 BP meds, and now I'm totally off one (the strongest) and another one is half the dosage it used to be. That's half of the total BP meds I was on.

Not all High Blood Pressure is weight related, though, so definitely keep a close eye on your numbers.

My BP came down with this type of induction : no salt , red tomatoes or red peppers, no cold cuts, only lean meats, unlimited olive oil, no cheeses, milk nuts.
No starches, processed food....

I started urinating no stop for several days, had to get up at night to pee for several days but my BP went from 165-90 to 120-65
Lost 13 lbs the first 2 weeks, now I'm down 22 lbs, I'm in my 3rd month my BP is still down.......

Low carb definitely lowered my BP. I credit the diuretic effect of low carb as one of the main reasons along with the weight loss. I have it checked once a month in my fitness assessment at the gym and it's always either normal or borderline on the low side!

Taking a magnesium supplement has been recommended to me. Has anyone struggled with LOW blood pressure? How do you safely bring it up a bit without going too far in the other direction?

I've never had a problem with my blood pressure, so I can't imagine what I would do if it was high.
I had my check up last week and it was 114 over 70. My DH's is on the lower side of normal and both my kids have a lower blood pressure. My daughter's is normally 90 over 40. But right now she is pregnant and it is around 114 over 70 or so.
But low blood pressure (if your not healthy) can be very dangerous too.

Losing weight helped lower mine. It wasn't dangerously high but the doctor said it was creeping up a little more every year. He put me on meds and I also started doing Atkins (2002). After a few months of really losing, I noticed when I would stoop down and get up I would get dizzy. I went to the doctor and my BP was then TOO LOW. He took me off the bp medicine and I just take a diuretic. It usually runs on the low side now (102/60) but I'm not getting dizzy any more then I normally am - haha

Another great diet for lowering BP is the DASH diet, it also lowered my BP it basically manipulates calcium. magnesium and potassium levels.

Worked good on me too.......there is a free pdf thru a Gov site.

Last time, it made my BP normal (lost 40 lbs). Since i gained back 33 lbs my BP went up (156/86)...I am hoping it will go down with my weight loss...

I am taking my BP meds from doctor, plus Multi-vitamin/Mineral Formula with B-comples, Essential fatty acid, Calcium-Magnesium Formula and Coconut Oil. For hot flashes, I am taking a Herbal equilibrium that contains: Red clover, Ashwagandha root, Passionflower, Kudzu extract, Wild Yam extract, and Block Cohosh. This is for hot flashed, night sweats and mild mood swings.

I am off medications for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and depression thanks to losing 50 pounds by eating a low carb diet.

Don't miss them at all and love to spend the money I was using for medications for new clothes.

Low carb definately helps. I went from 200/100 before meds, 130-150/85 with meds and now 90-110/59-75 after starting Atkins. On average my BP tends to drop too much now. I easily go below 90/60. My doctor is now taking me off my bp meds (beta blocker) slowly. That's how good Atkins is!

Losing weight, walking, water intake, less stress and watching my sodium all helped me. I think walking alone can completely improve your numbers.

I've been on 2 different meds for over 20 years and the stuff interferes with my sex life. Another reason to get this weight off.
