Even when you try to do the right thing..

..it back to bite you!

Darn it. We have very active kids. Our son's in soccer again and they've been practicing 3x a week for an hour at a time. He's been complaining of heel/Achilles pain, so I took him in.

Lo and behold he has something called Sever's disease, which basically is a combination of the activity and pre-puberty..very active kids are sometimes prone to it. Now he's sidelined for a while until the bones in his foot settle down. He's just going through a growth spurt they said (which would explain the eating everything in my other post!!)

Meanwhile, his carb-loving, videogame-playing pal is as happy as a clam in high tide.

Bummer.

At least it's not something like Haglund's syndrome or plantar fasciitis. He will eventually grow out of it, I'm told, as the cartilage slowly turns into bone down there.

WOE: Atkins; eating to BMR

I developed OSD when I was a kid. The doctor at the time treated it with cordisone shots directly into the bump below my knee. It apparently didn't work, since I had to have surgery to remove the bone spur they talk about in this article when I was 16.

Osgood-Schlatter Disease

Make sure he takes care of it and gets the rest the doctor recommends. I have a huge scar on my knee now that probably wouldn't have been necessary if the doctor when I was young had told my mom to make me rest more.

Hope he's back in the game soon.

Wow! I'm so sorry.

Yep, we are icing it as we speak, and no game for him tomorrow.
