Gyro carb count?
Meeting husband for lunch and I want to have a gyro - meat, onion, feta, tomato and sauce. (no pita) Anyone know where I can find a carb count on the meat and sauce? I can enter the other things separately in fitday. The fitday pita counts the WHOLE thing all together. Thanks!

Ok Thanks! That gave me a good idea - was nervous because I know it's processed and never really checked on it before

Hi Toni...
We love Gyros, and most places that serve them have a Gyro 'salad' they can serve without the pita and put the sauce on the side. I've ordered them as the Gyro and removed the pita or as the salad and neither has ever affected my plan to eat correctly. In places where they prepare their own sauces, Gyros are usually simply made, and are pretty straight forward. The only places 'bad stuff' could sneak in would be the spicing or in the dressing. |

I'm so glad I read this thread - it reminds me that I can have a delicious gyro meat salad! I've come back to Atkins after a loooong break and it seems like every day I find one or more delicious thing that is no longer off limits - it's awesome!

Yes,our Gyro Time has salads.. the sauce "should" be fine too.
It is yogurt based tho.. so not sure on the count. Maybe bring your own sauce. |

I am not a cucumber fan - well actually I hate the taste. So I order mine with sauce on the side (my lovely wife of 39 years loves cucumbers), and I order extra fetta on it. |

Hey there-- this brings up a question. Is the kabob meat made with bread? I went to a Gyro place fairly recently, and the meat they served for the Gyro salad tasted like it had bread in it.

The place we go is a local place that's been around for about 25 years - it's wonderful! The meat is roasted on a spigot - you know..they shave it off with that big knife? I'm sure it's some sort of processed mix. They serve everything separately there so it's really LC friendly. I just ate the meat dipped in the sauce on the side with about half the onion, 2 slices of tomato and the feta (I even shared the feta and tomato with DH). It normally comes with fries, but I sub with coleslaw (which I brought home anyway) I absolutely LOVE tzatziki sauce - isn't everything better with that??? LOL

It's like a meat loaf, w/bread crumbs. Alton Brown made gyro meat once. I was wondering about the carb count as well!

I make my Tzziki sauce from scratch, too. The last time I did this I added about a tablespoon of Tahini to full fat yogurt with crushed garlic, garlic juice, salt, pepper, and crushed cucumber. It was pretty darned good. |

You have to watch out for both the meat and the sauce.
Depending on who and how the meat is made it can have a LOT of carbs from the binder that hold it together if its the meatloaf type. Now if its the stacked meat type give thanks and dive in. As for the sauce ... that can be true tactical carbo-nuke, I remember one that we got in the restaurant that the ingredient list went something like this: Yogurt, High fructose Corn syrup, cucumbers, modified food starch so you really have to watch the sauce!! |

The meat we get doesn't look like meatloaf? I've never seen that kinda I guess. Though, it is processed and formed into that big leg looking thing LOL Well, I ate it, we'll see.
I think they make the sauce there - it's rather simple looking but delish.Last edited by ItsToni : 09-12-2008 at 06:28 PM. |

I saw that "Good Eats" Alton Brown gyro episode-- he actually said it was like a finely ground meat (lamb) loaf, but with NO carby/starchy addition like bread crumbs. Here is his recipe:
Recipes : Gyro Meat with Tzatziki Sauce : Food Network So seems pretty safe to me! (Phew b/c I them! Drool...) |

hpseids, I see you are in Chicago. Have you ever gone to 5 Faces down on Division/Rush Street (I think)? Their Gyros are awesome! Haven't been there in years.
