Do you think not eating grains for the first few months of Atkins is also a reason

that people do sooooo well on the program?

I know cutting out sugar has a lot to do with it...but sometimes, I wonder-if it is also due to taking out grains. I know this is probably a debatable issue but here is why I wonder...

I was a fat child. In 3rd grade, I weighed 135 lbs. Pretty heavy for a 3rd grader. By 4th grade, I weighed 145 lbs. Still very heavy. But what is so weird about me weighing so much-we never had sugar of any sort in the house. No candy. No soda. No chocolate. None at all. Yet I was heavy.
But I learned to eat 'healthy' at a very early age.

I ate brown rice. I ate whole grain pasta. I ate corn. No butter. I kept my fats low. Salad without dressing. I skipped fat-free stuff because it was just 'too sweet' for me. Yet I could never lose weight. Ever. When I was a little older, I went to WW and got accused of cheating because I didn't lose 10 pounds like everyone else had.

And then I discovered glorious, wonderful Atkins! And the first week of it, I dropped 4 1/2 lbs...it took me about 2 months to lose 5 lbs on WW...

So being that we never had sugar in the house-obviously-sugar wasn't my problem...but as soon as I cut out the grains, I started losing...

So do you think there is a connection here with Atkins and grains as well? Do you think that might be another reason people do so well on this WOE?

I agree with you. Any sort of starch will make weight loss difficult.

I ate LC bread for a while on maintenance, but gave it up totally after developing a grain intolerance. If I try to eat grains now, I get horrendous stomach pain. Doesn't matter what the source; same result.

I don't miss them.

I think its one of those "depends on the body".

My problem is sweets. Growing up the problem was sweets. We ate pretty healthy but we always had desserts, cookies, pie, candy bars, cakes in the house. I dont drink soda nor eat chips but put a plate of brownies in front of me and I wolf the whole plate.

I eat grains every day and still lose. Whole grain-no white. I eat brown rice 3x a week and have no problem losing.

Yep. I think so too. I still firmly believe our bodies were never meant to process grains in their hard, seed form. When they sprout, I think we can deal with them fine.

I decided to eat some steel-cut oats for breakfast the other morning, something I RARELY do any more - but I had a hankerin' for them - cooked myself up 1/3 cup and had it with some heavy cream and 2 pieces of bacon. My reward? Up FIVE POUNDS yesterday! Can you believe it? I know it's "water weight" because my body needed the extra moisture to process all those carbs but SHEESH!

I hope I remember that the next time I THINK I want grains.

We love the Ezekiel sprouted grains bread, and that's about as close to most grains as I get.

We have a bakery here in Tampa called Sami's bakery that makes a bunch of low carb breads. Those are about the only ones I can eat. When I stopped eating grains, boom, the weight started coming off.

Oh Samis !!! Great stuff. Too bad I can't eat their 7 grain bread any more. It was so filling !

Did you ever try their cinnamon raisin LC bread?

Nice Avi!

I love steel-cut oats with cinnamon, no cream or sugar and I do just fine. I think the combination of grains and dairy caused a water-weight gain in your body. I eat dairy separate from meat, fruit, and grains. In case I do bloat, I will drink a cup of fennel or peppermint tea.

I think in the next generation it will become even more apparent... sugar is not the only thing making us sick and fat (or sick and thin.....)

That is so true.

I never had ANY problems with wheat/grains until I gave them up and tried reintroducing them .. O M G ... That was all I needed to convince myself they were NO LONGER going to be in my future. No problems whatever since.

I say yes! Grains especially white, processed grains are detrimental to me. Believe it or not though, I can have unprocessed, whole wheat grains in moderation, and not go off track with weight loss. I prefer not to b/c then my fat intake would have to be lowered.

Same here. Atkins cleared up my prescription-strength sinus and migraine issues, but I didn't realize exactly what cured me until hitting the grain rung of OWL, after getting 'clean'. Now, English Muffins give me a stomach ache and other grain products make me feel stuffed up. I can eat some of them - but it's such a minefield of bloating, stalling and congestion I rarely bother. Too bad; I don't think grains are bad or unnatural but my body doesn't seem to want them anymore. Sadly, sugar doesn't affect me this way.

The BEST thing about my Atkins experience has been the 'elimination diet' aspect. What I've learned by dismantling, then rebuilding my eating in stages, has been invaluable.

Add me to the list too. I think that many people's medical issues are caused in some part by grains, and they probably don't realize that. They just pop a pill. I'd rather get rid of the cause than treat the effect, nip it in the bud!

I agree completely, grains mess up a lot of people.

I know I feel 1000 times better without grains in my life. I don't miss them and most of them are never coming back. I have had too many migraines to ever want another wheat product in my life!

I only get migraines when I consume wheat or corn. Easy choice, that.

ATKINS new what he was doing.

the starch in grains converts to glucose pretty rapidly, which, of course, puts the kibosh on weight loss. I thank the gods for low carb breads & pastas. But even those must be carefully monitored. I still get most of my carbs from salads & veggies,. Love & Profits: FLATFERENGHI

I will react to grains quicker then I will react to Sugar.

I never was a Big Sugar eater. Nope...I was more white bread, garlic bread, pizza, Hogies...etc.

I would bloat up like crazy (I still would if I ate them).

I'm the same way. Last time I was on Atkins, my downfall was sweets as far as eventually wandering off the WOE. For the intervening 10 years before I came back I STILL never ate pasta or cereal and very little bread. The bloating was too painful.

I had this problem as well. I was fine with grains pre-LC, but after 1yr of doing Atkins, I tried re-introducing them into my diet and my body freaked out (terrible bloating and such). I posted about it on this discussion forum, and several people mentioned that if you don't eat grains for awhile, your body quits making the enzymes needed to digest grains. That would definitely explain the bloating.

I react more quickly to grains than sugar,too...

Dark chocolate doesn't make me bloat. But give me hot cereal made with whole grains...and I look like I am pregnant!!

I tried adding in gluten free grains like brown rice. I was okay at first but then, the longer I ate it, the more it affected me-even though I started with only 1/4 cup...so I decided to take grains out for good-even if they were gluten free...the only grain that doesn't seem to bother me is corn...but I don't eat that, either.
