LC and vision?
I remembered someone had said that their doctor wanted them to discontinue LC because it had thought to caused or contributed to losing sight.
I was wondering if anyone has noticed the opposite effect? I've found that when I cut my intake of carbs, as I start to go into ketosis, my vision actually gets sharper. It's the oddest thing. I haven't really been craving anything sweet for the past 3-4 days, so I know I've naturally slipped into a ketotis state, and sure enough, I can sit and read the crawl at the bottom of CNN from the couch again. Is this just me and my odd body, or does anyone else notice this side effect as well? It doesn't bother me at all, in fact, I like being able to see better!! Kris ![]() |

My eyesight is better since I started LC. I wore glasses for about ten years (age thirty to forty), then after LC, my optician said I didn't need them any more. If I eat too many carbs (say over a hundred for a few days) then it starts to get worse again. I dont' have to stay anywhere near Induction levels to get the benefit - my maintenance levels work fine, but it definitely seems to be carb related.

Funny you should mention it! I just had an eye exam and got contact lenses. My last prescription was written in 2006 (yeah, I was WAY overdue) and I was -2.00 in each eye. This time around, I am apparently -1.25 in one eye and -1.50 in the other. Was not in ketosis last time, was in ketosis this time.
I was just discussing with a co-worker whether LC was the reason for this. ![]() |

Isn't it strange? My vision is normally fairly good. I only need glasses for driving at night, so it's not severe.
But it's so odd that such a small change in my eating habits make this happen. I feel strangely better that it's not just me. Kris "eagle-eye" T. ![]() |

I don't find a difference either way on LC. I've been on/off LC for about 3 years now. Just had an eye exam 2 weeks ago and have near perfect vision.
Thankful. |

I'd think vit A would have a longer term benefit. I find my sight varies over a day or two, and it varies with carb intake, even though I generally take CLO pretty consistently.

Yea...I can now copy & paste this here...this was something I wrote in June after I went to the eye doctor....
Going to the Eye Doctor Convinced Me To Stay on Low Carb A quick background: 16 years ago, I had retinal detachments. They did two surgeries in my left eye & 5 in my right eye. Because my right eye kept becoming detached, they finally took out the lens on the last surgery. Back then, no one was sure what caused this in me but kept telling me it was hereditary. Fast-Forward to now: when I went yesterday, they ask about any type of diseases that run in the family. Of course, diabetes runs in my family. So they asked who all had it. Let's see: my mom, my dad, my brother, my sister, my grandparents. They asked if it was both sets of grandparents. Yep. Sure was. Then they asked if I had been tested. Yep. Did I have it? Nope. They said they were so happy for me because it is so genetic and so rare to find someone-with that much history-who doesn't carry it over. But I knew it was because I found a way to eat to keep my blood sugars stable & under control. I told them that I had found a way of eating to lose weight & get healthy (they didn't ask for details so no need to tell them) Of course, with all that being said, I am not a candidate for Lasik nor the Bionic Implant (something brand new) so all I can stand on to keep my eyes healthy is God first of all (firm believer in that) and following a healthy eating plan that will keep them in the most healthy state they can be in currently. The doctors response to what I had been through & how my eyes were looking? "Wow. You can see better than what I thought you'd be able to." I think he was rather impressed that-despite seeing nothing but shadows out of the right eye and not having peripheral vision in the other-I can still read, write, work, type, run, etc. I know part of this is due in fact to getting my health under control years ago. His statement was enough to keep me doing low carb-even though I have switched plans off & on. Nothing has convinced me more than those words. If there's any reason to stay on a low carb plan now-it's so I can still read, write, work, type, run, etc. when I am 80 years old! The lady at the front desk asking if I was over 18 added to the convincing as well. ETA: I think anyone who might have vision problems should stick to low-carb...what it has done for me, it can do for you as well. Dyan

My vision changes on a daily basis. I had dryness and vision acuity problems as a complication to a PRK procedure, similar Lasik. The Dr. said that one thing I could do to minimize the vision changes was to ensure I was hydrated (your eyes are made of water too). In addition, the Dr. said that hormone cycle (periods of water retention) can also affect acuity. I thought that was interesting.
