What Is the most amount of carbs to eat?

I was just wondering, for someone who is about 190lbs what is the most amount of carbs they can eat and lose weight? The weight loss would be slower, but it wont be such a shock from eating only 20 for two weeks, more of a long tern eating lifestyle? any feedback would be great, please advice on a realistic carb count to lose at a slow rate, with moderately strenous excercise of course. Thanks

Hi AJ...
You really need to read ''The Book.'' It will explain the things you may have overlooked if I read & interpret your question properly.

There is no going hungry on this plan, even when going through induction. Your body and brain need to adjust to a new way of eating/living, and there is no reason not to follow a proven plan. The purpose of induction is to put the body into ketosis...that requires fewer carbs (the 20 a day).

I doubt you, or I, are people for whom ''exceptions'' need to be made - there is no good reason not to follow the plan as it was designed and field-tested by the good doctor himself.

There is no magic answer to your question either. It might be 45 carbs a day, or it might be 30 carbs a day, or only 20 carbs. If the body doesn't get into ketosis you are not going to lose as you should.

What ever it takes.

Get some keto sticks and check your ketosis.

I'll add carbs to my diet paying detailed attention to how much I actually eat. This can go on for several days, Like I'll eat 10 carbs the first day, then 20, then 30 on the third day and so on. Until I kick myself out of ketosis.

This gives me a good base to work with. When I'm doing cardio everyday (1 hour cardo/day) I can consume 100 to 150 grams of carbs a day, on my off days (no cardo) its between 50 and 70 grams of carbs a day. But you need to establish your own base line carb intake as this is different for everyone.

When I want to rip up (cut weight) I'll cut my carbs down to about 30 a day and do cardo for about 2 hours a day (one hour in the am and another in the pm)

the 20 carb limit is for Atkins induction. Perhaps you should explore other plans like carbohydrate addict diet (CAD). That was the first book I read way back when, and the plan was easy to follow.

it is impossible to give a quantitative answer to your query.

Much as we would like to. If u are doing ATKINS, it is best to read & follow the book. He gives us a great deal of latitude, as we progress through the phases. As mentioned above, there are other low carb plans. Pick the one that suits you. As long it is a plan, that makes u forget that u are "dieting". Deprivation leads to off-plan eating. I believe u are very committed. The fact, that u are happy with slow loss proves it. Love & Profits: FLATFERENGHI.

Dr. Mike Eades (Protein Power) stated in a blog entry that you begin to lose the positive affects of a ketogenic diet when you go over 130 ECC a day. But most dedicated low carbers, even on maintenance, tend to stay lower than that.

According to Protein Power 40 ECC a day is optimal for weight loss and restoring health -- 55 ECC a day is perfect for pre-maintenance. Most people can tolerate approximately the same amount of carbs as protein for maintenance. So for me, since my protein requirements are at least 72 grams a day, I will be aiming for 70-75 ECC in maintainance. Perhaps a bit higher depending on how my blood sugars do (I'm diabetic).

I agree with the others to said to read the book. Everyone needs to understand their plan and how it works and how best to work it for the results you want.

Its amazing to me the difference between the amount of carbs people can consume without gaining...for me it has to be less than 50 grams per day and I'm a RUNNER ! (I'm in maintenance for the past 6 years) .. others can go over 100 grams per day and not gain.

We are all so different.

I don't count fiber among the 10. I intake about 25 grams of fiber a day.
I eat mostly protein because I do weight training a lot. My diet is mostly fiber, fat and protein. I eat chicke, tuna fish, some red meat and greens. Eggs for breakfast, well, an omelet with cheese, bacon, some tomato and green papers....and protein bars for snacks.
It usually keeps my NET carbs under 10. Sugar gives me headaches and makes me tired... even the slighest amount... and no, I am healthy and don't have diabetes

If you're looking for something with a little more carbs, then I would suggest trying Atkins for Life-it's especially good for people who want more variety, don't have a lot to lose, are okay with slower weight loss and don't want to go through an Induction level phase. You start out at 60 g of carbs per day & adjust accordingly (if you're losing, raise your carbs by 5 g. if you're gaining, drop your carbs by 5 g.) I did Atkins for Life to drop my last 32 lbs.

Barry Groves (Natural Health & Weight Loss) suggests 40-60 grams and avoids the 2 week induction.

This is great for people who are not into the induction flu, lowering their carbs as much as Atkins AND for those who have the patience for slower and natural weight loss.

It is a great book, and easy read... and Barry AND his wife both lost and maintain their losses with that amount of carbs. (he eats bread too).

My hubby lost 35lbs eating around 60 grams a day (and is maintaining it with the same...).

It CAN be done, a 2 week induction is great for those who want that quick loss, but most of those people end up with the PISS (post induction stall syndrome). Barry's plan might help to avoid that PISS, if you stick with it and make it a plan for life.

Good luck in whatever you decide!

I would think it's net (ie not including fibre, not saying anything about sugar alcohols etc) because Barry's English and European labels don't include fibre in the carb count.

It depends entirely on the individual. Age, metabolism, co-morbid conditions etc. You have to test it on yourself by utilizing the carb ladder.

I wonder when that changed. His original book didn't say you had to add fibre to the carb count shown on labels.

It is net carbs, they do not count fiber (but they DO spell it fibre, like it SHOULD be spelled LOL)

My advice would be to find a plan you like, and stick to it. Low carb is different from other eating plans and the more you know the better off you are. Its more than just counting carbs. Good luck!

I am Type II and went on the low carb diet (lifestyle) 2 years ago to control my diabetes. I have been off medication for almost 2 years and see better BS levels now than I ever did on meds. I have also lost over 60 pounds. I keep my net carbs between 20 and 30 per day. I eat Healthy Life low carb bread toasted with cream cheese every day for breakfast. I eat salads and strawberries almost everyday. Lots of cheese and meat and eggs and I find pork rinds satisfy my cravings for chips. I know this is the way I must eat for the rest of my life in order to control diabetes. My BS levels are now in the 80's and low 90's. I do some cardio and a lot of weights, 1000 crunches and 20 pushups a day and feel better at 50 than I ever did at 30.
