STARBUCKS!!....Or Coffee In General!!

Hey guys ~ I am sure there has be a kazillion threads on this topic ~

I NEED my iced, milkshakey, COLD, Java Chip Frap, with NO whip....every day!

But ~

I have found a substitute:

It is Mocha Cappuccino and you get it at Costco for $10 bucks ~ 4lbs, huge can! You can make it hot or cold ~ I use water and ice ~

It is to die for. I have saved almost $150/month, by giving up Starbucks ~ and my daughter works there!

But I am thinkin @ 15 carbs per tablespoon is not a good thing?

It is tough being me, I'm tellin ya

15 carbs per tablespoon? *cough cough cough*

Umm, yeah not exactly low carb. Sounds like sugar and lots of it.

Espresso, heavy cream, SF syrup, ice, blend. Low carb heaven.

Just be careful though- especially at starbucks!! They use a TON of the cream, and those carbs add up. But, it's a nice treat.

A lot of people also use unsweetened almond milk and flavored syrups to make lattes and stuff.

Oh I know, trust me ~ my daughter is a supv. there and I know it all ~

Dorian ~ how come folks here do not use Sweet N Low? I do, as it is almost no carbs and zero calories ~

I don't like Splenda, it takes too many packets to get the sweetness I want

LOL, oh well there are two groups on this board it seems: those who pretty much think if it works for you go for it, and those who have their taboo lists. Now, don't get me wrong I am not knocking the healthy ones AT ALL, but if I was so healthy I wouldn't have eaten so many dang krispy kremes!

Many people on this board will warn you of the poisons of aspartame, saccharin, ace-k, etc. There is definitely research to back up the claims too. Some of it is downright scary. Soooooo, I don't know how many people are going to jump on the sweet n low wagon with you. BUT- heck I think everyone uses sweeteners once in awhile. I am more comfortable using splenda or stevia blends, but that's me.

It's not just about cals and carbs- we're trying to be healthier. Junk in, junk out, you know?

Try making your own coffee shakes... there are many ways.

I personally use milk, sweetner, instant coffee ( I use the tasters choice single packs) and ice - blend until creamy smooth.

You could also sub cream and water for the milk. Or use water with a lowcarb protein powder. Or use a lowcarb pre-made shake (they do stall some people, but the lowcarb EAS seems to be a good brand. Or the Atkins brand.) Or almond milk. Or soy milk - if you are not sensitive to soy or have issues with hypothyroidism.

You might also try making an "egg cream" - do a search for a variety of recipes - to which you add some coffee or instant coffee.

But I would definitely get rid of the instant powder with all the sugar in it - thats definitely going to ruin your diet efforts.

What can I order at Starbuck's that would be sugar-free but good, with cream in it? Hot or cold.

I just get a plain old tall decaf, and I ask for 3 tbsp cream, and 3 packs splenda. I think its pretty yummy!

That's what I do and if you want a little chocolatey flavor you can add some unsweetened cocoa powder.

I am. I didn't buy anymore today and I am out! I have a really dumb question. I know nothing about coffees, so bear with me...

Expresso. Do I need a coffee brewer to brew that? It is not powder is it?

Heavy whipping cream. or just heavy cream - you can get it by the quart at Sam's or Costco.

You can buy espresso powder. Or just use some good dark instant. I like the Nescafe Decaf myself.

I made a good one yesterday - 8 oz. unsweetened chocolate almond milk, 2 oz. heavy cream, 1 scoop unflavored whey protein powder (I'd have used choc or vanilla but didn't have any!), 2 tsp. thicken thin not/sugar, sweetener to taste, 2 tsp. decaf instant coffee, 1 tsp. Hershey's Special Dark cocoa powder, and a splash of DaVinci SF choc syrup - blended that all up, then added 8 ice cubes and blended til smooth. I gave half of it to my Mom and filled up my own 12 oz. glass. Boy it was good!

There IS a sugarfree mix, which Netrition carried or maybe still does - Big Train or something like that??

LOL, I buy it by the half gallon at Costco!

I use my FoodSaver to vacuum seal half of it in a quart jar while I use up the other half. It keeps a good long while in that jar!

My local Starbucks don't have heavy cream except in the whippers, where it's already been sweetened! This is a total bummer. If I get anything, it's a SF cinnamon dolce latte with whole milk.

At home, though, I can make a Coffee Frap in 5 minutes: 3 Tbs heavy cream, 3 Tbs SF vanilla or other syrup, and 1/2 cup coffee (or 1/2 cup water and 1/2 tsp or more instant coffee), 1 scoop vanilla protein powder, 1 pkt Splenda. Buzz in blender till completely mixed. Then put in one glass full of ice cubes and grind away, jiggling the blender often to get the ice chunks to break up better. Pour into a huge glass and serve with a straw and an iced-tea spoon.

It would depend on what kind of milk is used. If it's the standard 2% milk that they use then it would be around 13 carbs for size grande.

Whole milk for a grande would have 12 carbs.

A lot of us order the Americano which is mixed with water instead of milk. You can put a splash of half/half in it, and if they have it, hwc.

I prefer to skip the milk/cream all together... cuz one time I asked for hwc, and they put a but-load of cream in it... [they thought heavy=lots]

sometimes if I know I am going to starbucks, I'll just bring my own cream in a little container, that way I know exactly what it is... or I just skip the cream all together.

But if you are cutting your carbs, I would avoid the lattes.

Well my daughter works at Starbucks and get a big bag of coffee each week free, but after 2 years she never got it, since she hates coffee, but NOW I want it!

She got me today Expresso Roast...and she grounded it up real fine...( For some reason )

AND: I also got a coffee brewer, that brews one cup at a time INTO the cup and then you take that with you....apparently. She got that for me...

So I will brew this and make a shake with all suggestions below...
