Last time I had mine checked it was at around 150, coming down from 170. And I eat loads of eggs and meat.
So yes, it can indeed lower cholestrol. The recent Isreali study that's been in the media a lot showed that too, though that one didn't have the participants eating lots of animal fat. I haven't had mine checked for a while, really should go get the up to date figure. |

It does in the long run. During the first 3 months it can rise though, after that period it begins to drop.
The greatest benefit for cholesterol levels is it raises HDL and lowers triglycerides. Both more important that total cholesterol. Last edited by Kansas Deb : 08-14-2008 at 05:04 AM. Reason: add |

The last time I had mine checked (at a little health clinic at work) about 5 months ago or so, my cholesterol was too low to register on the nurse's meter! Which meant it was below 140. And this was after eating low-carb for about 8 months. . .with AT LEAST 2-4 eggs everyday.
Now, I honestly don't know what my cholesterol was before low-carb for comparison. But, I do know this, the last time I had it checked was in college and it was 165. . .this was before I ever went through 2 pregnancies and got fat. And I was much younger then, about 15 years younger. . .and you know how those college kids eat: pizza, wings, ice cream, bagels, burger, fries. . .not exactly a healthy diet back then.

IME, yes. Works even better if you take flush-free niacin 2 a day, along with red yeast rice, garlic, and fish oil. Also, regular cardiovascular exercise (read: getting the heartrate up for a minimum of 30 minutes daily) will increase HDL.
My pre-Atkins cholesterol was HDL 75, LDL 177 After 6 years on Atkins: HDL 110, LDL 95 I eat tons of saturated fat and red meat. I also eat tons of non-starchy veggies drowned in butter. Oh and fruit too ! I don't do grains simply because after 6 years, I've developed an intolerance to them. Betty

In January 2006 (pre-LC) my cholesterol was 232 with HDL of 52, LDL of 101, and triglycerides of 396.
I started Atkins in January 2007, and by August 2007 my cholesterol was 189 with HDL of 50, LDL of 125, and triglycerides of 72. I'm waiting for the results from my physical last Monday which I expect to be better since I began exercising regularly in January 2008. Then I'll create a thread on the pros and cons of exercise and see if anyone has any opinions... ![]() |

xbeyond,
I had to weigh in on that too. I am actually heavier than I was during my last physical when I did my blood work this year my cholesterol levels had improved even more. Both times tests I was on the Atkins diet; but I have been doing it longer now, and my numbers are still improving. ![]() |
