Nuts don't stall me. I'm going to tell it like it is! If I buy nuts, I will overeat them and not lose weight. nuts are a very high calorie food and also a very tasty food. Do the math.

I used to eat a LOT of nuts. Mostly almonds. But since I started eating a big breakfast, I'm usually not hungry between meals, which has drastically cut down on my snacking. I am still using the almonds for almond milk. Never felt that they stalled me, though.

Eating nuts makes no difference as long as I accurately track the carbs.
I eat Macadamias or sunflower kernels. I try to eat along with my "dessert" - SF jello, or whatever so they feel special. Helps me control the quantity. Patsy |

AW NUTS!
Think nuts help me stay on, and as long as they are not salted, help me. My favorites are plain almonds, unsalted peanuts in the shell. I get the peanuts fresh from a little market and are so much better than the pre-packaged kind.
If you want some flavor, get the wasabi almonds from Archer Farms at Target. They're awesome! |

I eat a mixture of mac nuts, pecans, almonds and brazil nuts..
usually a couple ounces a day.. I especially like them when I am on my days when my hunger is very low because I can eat a few to take my supplements with and know I am getting good amt. of fats and calories as well so I don't end up have VERY low cal days (have had a problem with pushing it too far in the past)... I can get carried away with nuts though. they can cause my weight loss to slow if I am also eating lots of cheeses..

Ok, I see a really common theme here, so I'm going to take serious note: Beware of the portion size! As a former carby junk food binge, that's a good thing for me to keep in mind. I like the idea of getting the unsalted one to help with not overeating. What is it about salty food that makes it so easy to keep eating and eating and eating??

I eat nuts often but try not to overdo it. I love almonds and almond meal to make crackers. I also like pecans, macadamia nuts, walnuts, pine nuts, in fact I dont think there is a nut I dont like!
I the chili peanuts I get at the farmers market, just peanuts, chili powder and spices. Delicious! I also love seeds! Sunflower, pumpkin, you name it! Edited to add, I almost always buy my nuts raw which helps with portion control and to keep the sodium down. Last edited by pocahontas : 08-14-2008 at 10:42 AM. |

I eat a handful several nights a week, walnuts, almonds, or pecans. I like the crunch and they are high in good fats. I have a binge problem with peanuts and cashews, so I don't buy them anymore. I get the large bags of raw unsalted nuts from Sam's to keep in the house. Sometimes I roast the almonds in an iron skillet with butter and a little salt, but not often. (Also, peanuts are not really nuts, they are legumes, in the bean family.)

Here's a great way to fix your raw nuts ... got this from Eat Fat Lose Fat.
Put 4 cups of raw nuts into a bowl, sprinkle on 1 TBS sea salt and add water to cover. Soak for 8 hours. Drain. If you have a food dehydrator spread the nuts over the pans and dehydrate for at least 12 hours (I found the almonds take a lot longer than the pecans and walnuts. So much for making a mix.) You can also put them in the oven (spread out on cookie sheets no more than one nut deep) at 150° for 8-10 hours or until dry. They come out nice and crispy crunchy. I keep mine in a zip lock bag in the refrigerator. And I have portion issues too so limit myself to 1/4 cup when I have them (which is every other day or so).

a. Nuts stall me a little if my portion size gets out of control.
If I have a couple of handfuls a day, they don't affect me at all. |

Nuts are only a problem if you aren't eating to your hunger (eating mindlessly when not hungry) or if you are triggered by them because they remind you of bingy carbohydrate foods. The key to getting over the binge impulse is to just eat them as much as you desire until you grow sick of them. Since nuts are made of fat, the conditioned/learned binge response will die down and you actually WILL become sick and grossed out by them. This won't work with carb foods, because carbs actually do make you fatter thus hungrier the more you eat them. I promise everyone who just allows themselves to eat nuts until they are sick of them, as part of a proper low carb diet, will discover that they can eat nuts as a normal part of their diet without feeling any manic drive to eat them all. |

I found that peanuts make me stall or gain but I think that's because I ate way more than I should have. I do eat walnuts, pecans and brazil nuts but try to limit myself to 8 nuts and no more than 3 times a week.

I love nuts of all kinds. I also know when I get a craving for a snack, its usually a craving something crunchy and salty. Since chips and pretzels are a nono, nuts fit the bill.
Eating nuts within reason has not stalled me. I have found that I have portion control issues with cashews so I dont buy those. I always have a giant can of planters peanuts in my pantry that I will grab a handful out of maybe 1 or 2 days a week. There is also the large economy container of almonds in my pantry, but I dont tend to snack on those at all, those are used to finely chop and make a crust for the occasional cheesecake i bake. Another one that I realy enjoy is the Blue Diamond brand sweet onion and garlic flavored almonds. I can leave those on my desk while working and only ever snack on one or 2 at a time because the flavor is strong enuff that just a little taste satisfies a craving. |

C) when I keep it to actual nuts (peanuts and cashews are LENTILS, not nuts), and I have never eaten more than an ounce or two a day.

I just added peanuts and Almonds back into my diet this weekend. I had lost two pounds on Monday from last week (I weigh once a week) so they didn't seem to bother me. I am keeping it at 1 oz servings, so as not to over do it. I think Almonds make a great snack to grab if you are in a pinch and hungry.

portion control is easier with raw nuts. this is helpful two fold.
1. portion control 2. elimination of oxidized oils which contribute to inflammation. |

Well if you count peanuts (especially peanut butter), that along with almonds and hazelnuts--usually in meal form--then typically about 1.5 to 2 servings per day. If you count seeds--then add another serving! I feel they have actually helped me to lose. I don't like a lot of fatty meats, not big into cheese, etc. and I suspect that these things have helped me to up the fats to better levels--or my body just likes them!
