I've said it before and I'll say it again. HFCS is weird junk, and I predict that in 10-20 years, we're going to see a fallout from it like you will not believe.

You know what?
I CHOOSE not to eat this junk, but I DON'T want the junk banned. How long have they wanted to ban all of our fatty foods? |

If they ban it, food prices will go up and people will revolt. Or, if they ban it, maybe from the high prices of food people will stop buying junk.
Did you know..Coke with sugar (or sugar cane, I can't remember) tastes so different from the Coke that's sold in most stores? Once in a blue moon DH and I will go to the Mexican grocery store and buy a glass bottle to share. It tastes so much better with the real sugar. ![]() Here's another good article: Accidental Hedonist - Tariffs and Subsidies - The Literal Cost of High Fructose Corn Syrup Using Coke as an example, and why they just don't use sugar.. "a 1/10th of a cent increase in sweetener, per serving, would cost Coca-Cola roughly $122,423,790. And here you were thinking your car insurance costs were high." A 1/10 of a cent increase per serving might cost Coca-Cola what would amount to a small fortune to you and me, but it's just a tiny dent in their profits.
I have no problems calling for a ban on HFCS. Let it raise the price of foods. Just as gas prices have shown that people resist acting responsibly until it affects their wallets, the same can be applied to what we eat. |

I think we're already seeing the fallout- from the Brain Blogger article, "consumption of HFCS has increased greater than 1000% from 1970 to 2007."
International Journal of Obesity - Putative contributors to the secular increase in obesity: exploring the roads less traveled "Obesity prevalence in the United States has been increasing for at least 100 years, with an apparent acceleration in the past 3 decades." ScienceDirect - Physiology & Behavior : The epidemic of obesity and changes in food intake: the Fluoride Hypothesis "The consumption patterns for many foods have changed over the past 30 years, but the increase in the consumption of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) for soft drinks is far and away the largest. Moreover, the rise in HFCS intake is an environmental insult that has occurred at exactly the same time as obesity began to increase in prevalence." Statistics on Childhood Obesity "For children between the years of 2 and 5 and adolescents between 12 and 19, the rate of obesity has doubled since the 1970s. For children between the ages of 6 and 11, the rate has tripled." I'm a big believer in personal responsibility and wouldn't support a ban on HFCS, but would put it in the category of cigarettes. Tax it, mount a comprehensive educational campaign ("This is your butt. This is your butt on HFCS."), put a surgeon general's warning on everything that contains it, and for pity's sake don't peddle it at schools.

I won't try to ban what's on your plate, and I'd ask you to respect my plate as well. Recall, Mr Bacon, that you are living an alternative lifestyle. Did you read the thread that had who the corporate sponsors of The American Heart Association were? It's no wonder that a carb based diet is endorsed! |

The difference is one is natural, the other is not. But I get your point.
