Trying the forbidden fruit...

I'm at the point of being ready to move on to the "other fruit" rung, so today I bought an apple. Just a small one of course.

So far I've only had berries for fruit. I tried melon too, but it just give me cravings. But an apple has more fibre than melon, doesn't it? So hopefully it won't make my blood suagr go crazy. I ate it about an hour ago, with my lunch, so with protein and fat, so I should know soon if it makes me hungry again too soon after eating.

If I'm fine then tomorrow when I do my food shop I'll buy a bag of what they label "fun size" apples, aimed at kid's lunch boxes and include one with my lunches next week.

Heh, at least this time I remember how to eat an apple. When I first had an apple after my first go around on low carb I kept biting the inside of my mouth until I'd re-learnt how to eat them! But I hadn't had one for well over a year that time.

Anyone else got good or bad experiences reintroducing apples? Are red or green ones the best? And when exactly to eat it. Before the main part of my lunch, or afterwards? I don't want to think of it as dessert.

Or how about having it with my pre-gym snack, which next week will be chicken salad?

I eat apples almost daily-sometimes with almond butter. I eat all kinds but love the Honeycrisp. I have dropped 5 lbs the last two weeks-but this has been from keeping my calories under control and fruit is a big part of my WOE. Fruit does not give me cravings or blood sugar swings. Hope it works for you!

I had no problems with the apple. I didn't get hungry all afternoon. I had my afternoon snack ready to go to the gym, but I wasn't waiting to have it. And was fine at the gym, didn't get hungry. So I'm getting a bag of apples tomorrow to continue the experiment.

I am still not doing fruit (yet again anyway)..
I used to love a granny smith with a wedge of sharp cheddar..

I just found out that cherries are very low GI!

That is interesting.. that will be what I will have when my induction is over!

I eat tons of apples - average 6-8 a day many days. I eat many other fruits as well but apples are one of the easiest on the go. I prefer Ganny Smith (green) but that is a taste preference, not a one is better than another issue.

I eat apples once in awhile. Granny Smiths are the best! I eat erries and melon mostly. Occasionally a small orange with a very high fat lunch or dinner.

Wow! You eat apples like I eat eggs! I don't think I could eat that many in a day, even if I was allowed to. Granny Smiths were always my favourite too, straight out of the fridge, all crispy and cool. Mmmmm...

I know what you mean about "on the go". They're what I call a "hand fruit". No crockery or cutlery required, no mess, no fuss.

I tried Burger Kings "apple fries" the other day... its just apples cut in the shape of a fry. Amazingly, they were cold and crisp and really delicious! (one little pack of apples has 6 total carbs, 25 cals). It was very portion controlled! Unfortunately, the price was like 1.29 (I think) for a rather small amount of apples. But this was a situation where I couldnt access any other food easily.



I think there is a self-fulfilling prophecy thing with fruit causing cravings... i.e. people explect it to happen, so if they feel the least bit hungry or wanting sugar they attribute it to the fruit. Whereas they might feel the same way, anyways, without the fruit. Like a placebo effect, where if someone is given a sugar pill and told they will feel better, they actually start to feel better. I'm not saying that its not a problem for some people, but I think most people can learn to enjoy fruit.

That's a good point. I know when I had the first one yesterday I was trying hard to put it out of my mind and not be continuously monitoring myself to see am I hungry? Am I hungrier than I would be at this time if I hadn't eaten it? I knew if I thought about it too much I'd make myself hungry.

I have had low blood sugar problems --- and when my blood sugar goes really low, there is a drive to eat something, anything, that has some sugar in it. The body seems to sense it needs sugar somehow. Accompanied by a light headed, weak feeling. Even eating plain no-taste bread or pure sugar, or anything food for that matter, is what my body starts to want to get just a few bites of anything to get the blood sugar up and stop the symptoms.


Its a much different sensation that a craving for something sweet and wanting an icecream sundae or some cookies or something in the genral category of desserts or snacks.... I think people confuse the two.

Good job on the experiment. I wish everyone would do experiments, go slow and really take the time to see how your body reacts.

Apples were the first "carbier" fruit I added, then I added in navel oranges. This time of year, I dig into peaches and nectarines (the harder and unripe the better...but that's just me lol).

Just about all your apples have the same amount of carbs per serving. So it's really your preference as to a red delicious (cut up in your tuna salad is AWESOME) or Green apple if you're wanting something less sweet. I was really digging those Fuji apples...YUM-O!!

I follow Atkins, and I have at least 2-3 servings of fruit a day. There is no reason to 'forbid' it in ones plan, if you plan for it!!!

Way to go and congrats on adding another item into your menu. How exciting!!!!

But cannot eat them, as they cause an insulin surge and I am hungry soon afterwards. Darn it all.

I've never had low blood sugar issues, but I've known people who have and wouldn't want to get between them and the food when they get that psycho hypo look in their eyes.

I would agree it must be different than an ordinary craving for some specific item or type of food. I can just wait those out and take my mind off them. Don't think that would work with the first case.

Thanks! I picked up red apples in the end, they were the ones that came in the small sizes.

It is good to experiment, like you say. I think people get terrified to try something new - legal for plan of course - because it just might slow or stall their wieght loss for a couple of days or a week. Like, big deal! If it doesn't work out, cut it out again. If it does work out okay you're getting to enjoy something extra in your diet. People end up depriving themselves of things they could have incorporated into their plan with no problems, because of this fear.

Weird how the same foods have different effects on different people. I seem to be able to have the apples with no problems. But melon, lower on the Atkins OWL rungs, even eating it with lots of fat and protein, even though it's fewer carbs than apples, sends me on a roller coaster as if I'd eaten chocolate or something. I wonder if it's to do with fibre? Melon doesn't have much fibre, does it? Where apples have more, and that will slow down the digestion.

No self-fullfilling procephy for me regarding apples. I noticed the effect they had for me long before I ever tried low-carb. Then once I did I finally understood why they made me hungrier than I was before I ate them. Well I don't completely understand, as in why apples and not other fruits.
