wondering about popcorn

How harmful is air-popped popcorn with a 0 calorie spray on it? I used to eat it all the time, but I think it stalled my weight loss. I like the feeling of eating a lot of it with few calories and fat. Now that I am at my goal, I'm afraid to eat it.

Nope, no popcorn. What level are you on, induction, OWL or maintenance?

She says she is "at goal" so I will assume maintenance.

You CAN eat the popcorn, but be aware that it may cause you bloating and water retention due to the carbs and the fiber. Someone else was posting yesterday that she chose to get some popcorn at the movies, without butter, and was paying the price for eating it with a very upset tummy!

Why not go with a veggie instead? I made veggie chips yesterday in my dehydrator - 1 zucchini and 2 crooknecks, tossed with a bit of olive oil and lightly salted - and DH and I ate them all up! Crunchy, a tiny bit salty, and good for you too!

We go to the theatre very rarely, and when we do go, I eat popcorn. Our place has real melted butter for the popcron, and I love it. I find that it does make me retain water for about a day, but no problems after that, the weight drops right back down. I might not eat it if it was a frequent thing, but since we only go once every two months or so, I just enjoy the popcorn and a small diet non-cola soda (which is also a rarity for me.)

You could try a small portion one time, with or without butter (although why anyone wants popcorn without butter and salt is beyond my ability to comprehend <g>) and see what effect it has on you. That way you'll know whether or not to include it in your diet as an occasional treat.

I've done popcorn on maintenance and it was just fine. Fawn posted the other day about eating popcorn as a snack too. Obviously be careful about what you put on it, but once you've reached the grains rung you can try it and see how if affects you.

I don't think I'd eat popcorn at the movie theater though- I'd make my own where I could control the ingredients!

I am on maintenance too and popcorn is ok for me from a carb standpoint ... but I find I cannot control myself if it is just readily available in any quantity. One thing I do eat -- had some last night -- is the child-sized bags of Smartfood popcorn - 100 calories, 8 net carbs. And when I feel hungrier than that, I add a wedge of cheese to the snack ...

Why no calorie spray?? Do you low carb, if so why not have butter. That no cal spray is just chemicals (I think), but it can't be good for you like natural, real butter.

popcorn is our once a week treat......
sea salt and real butter.......

It bloats me the following day but I accept it and know I cannot eat it daily.

Remember that 0 calorie sprays have the most dangerous man made fat there is.....

If you're going to do it, do it with real food.

I may not be in the right site. I am not on Atkins. I have followed the Scarsdale Diet and am now doing my own thing but it seems that low carbs produce the best results. I pretty much follow the Scarsdale eating plan only adding a little here and there.

If I read your post right, you haven't actually experienced any problems eating popcorn, right? I'm not sure why you're hesitant if you've lost to goal and ate it during the weight-loss phase. Why not experiment and find your maintenance limit?

If you're on maintenance, I see no reason not to dabble in some popcorn occasionally

I weigh myself once a week. So what I eat on one day may not show up by the time the end of the week comes along. I weigh on Sunday mornings now, so if I have popcorn at the theatre that afternoon, I have all week to burn it off. I maintain within a pound or two. I get a small bag and skip the salt, have a little heavy hand with the melted butter, but with a small bag, and with a gallon diet pepsi.....I tend not to eat much for the rest of the day...which balances it out.

The only way you'll know how you'll feel is to try it. If it sets off a binge, or you get cravings for more things...then you know it's not for you. If you can have a few cups of popped corn and enjoy yourself, and it doesn't make you feel bloated or set off cravings, then that's your answer.

No worries! This is not an Atkins only site, its a Low Carb site. I seem to be fine with a little corn now and then but I am not at goal yet so I limit it but when I get to maintenance I am hoping to include a weekly indulgence while maintaining my loss.
