My local BJ's has been out of Heavy Cream for over a week now. I stoped at Price Chopper to grab some. It's SO much more expensive there. At BJ's it's $3.09 for a quart. At PC it's $3.27 for a pint.

Then I noticed in the very next case was Whipping Cream. Same brand, same ingredients listed (why the heck do they put vegetable oil in this stuff?), same nutritional information. But it was only $2.79. What gives?

The brand I buy that is sold at both my local BJ's and Price Chopper is from a local dairy.

Heavy cream and heavy whipping cream (same thing) should NOT have oil in them. It should have one ingredient: cream!

I thought my Walmart was bad. It is like 3.25 for the quart. I can go to a local grocery now and buy it cheaper.

Every single brand of heavy cream being sold at Price Chopper here in Worcester lists vegetable oil/mono and diglycerides in its ingredients.

Oil in the cream! Oh my gosh - just a reminder how important it is that we always read the labels. DON'T buy the stuff with oil in it, it isn't really cream! My recipes include plenty of oil, but I want it to be how much I put in, not what some manufacturer wants to sneak in.

Cream...yum!

Trans fats are those oils that start with "hydrogenated, " or, "partially hydrogenated."

Yuck!

Mine only lists cream as the ingredient. I use heavy whipping cream. I just paid a little over $4.00 (pre tax) for 1 pint of generic/store brand.

I was thinking of buying it in bulk at Costco to save some $$$. Does anyone know how long heavy cream usually last? Does it go bad quickly like milk?

If you have a Fresh & Easy (tesco) their cream is *just* cream.

Trader Joe's cream is also not messed with.

You can buy half gallons of Manufacturer's Cream at Smart and Final (I think also Cash and Carry?). From what I can tell, it is just cream also. And very reasonably priced.

Can you tell I am a cream aficionado?

Koo, just read the ingredients. Good cream is just "Cream". Bad cream has skim milk (wth?) and all sorts of thickeners.

WTH! I never thought to read the ingredients in heavy cream. Mine reads Heavy ceam, mono and diglycerides, polysorbate 80 and carrageenan. Contains milk ingredients! WTH! I guess we really really have to read every durn label! Got quite a shock yesterday at the store when I read the ingredients of 100% Beef Hebrew National Hot Dogs and discovered they contained soy!

What is this world coming to??

I am in such shock, maybe just replacing my cream with some "real" cream will get my scale moving.

Even the Organic Valley heavy cream sold around here (Organic Valley) has carrageenan in it. It's really thick and good, though. Almost chunky.

Will have to check CostCo's heavy cream!

I will be looking for sure. If anyone has brand names for us that don't have additives in it please let us know.

Unfortunately no Trader Joes here.

None of the Trader Joe's stores in the Chicago area (at least that I have found...and I've looked at MANY) carry the cream that is in the little bottles with the pink caps, which is supposed to be just cream and nothing else. We only get the kind with the additives. Not only that, but at the store closest to me they only carry the smallest size of carton.
Booooooooo....

Every time I read a thread with you Americans talking about cream I'm so happy I live in Britain. That reminds me, I need to buy some double cream on the way home tonight (48% butterfat.) Or maybe I'll get some clotted cream (55% butterfat!) All of these definitely only have "cream" as the ingredients.

::end cream gloat::

I wouldn't have thought so, if it's liquid, I thought transfats were solid? Liquid oils chemically altered to make them solid at room temperature.

Unfortunately Ireland is rubbish fr cream...which is where I am now. The cream is all single (runny) cream and quite a few have stuff added.

oh to be in England........
