Can someone give me some info on artificial sweeteners?

Internet searching doesn't seem to help me find the info I'm looking for. I'm trying to stay away from real sugar for obvious reasons, but AS make my stomach upset, and have that lovely laxative effect.

My question is: which are the mildest in that regard?

None, as far as I'm concerned! I avoid anything artificial. I use stevia and erythritol only. Even Xylitol upset my tummy.

Stevia and erythritol have no side effects (but watch for candies with insoluble fiber AND erythritol). Beware of the other sugar alcohols! Splenda gives me headaches, but a lot of people use it without any problems.

I found stevia (at least in the packets) to be profoundly nasty. I don't know why anyone would use that. To me and my lovely wife, it isn't sweet, it doesn't taste anything remotely like sugar, and has a wicked nasty aftertaste. Your mileage may vary.

I use splenda sometimes. It tastes ok in small doses. I just made some Koolaid with one of the quick packs I bought recently. It worked ok in that.

It seems we all like different things on this board. I cannot touch Splenda, it cause my my blood sugar to go all out of wack and causes cravings for me. Stevia, I could never get used to the taste, hust didn't do it. I have a coffe every morning with half a package of equal and half a package of sugar twin and heavy cream and it is perfect. Somehow the mix of the two is what I like, weird I know. I have no other atrificial sugar during the day.

Dorian, I use splenda quick packs exclusively and have no side effects from that. I have used powdered Erythitol only cuz I like to make that lovely ice cream and fudge, and you just can't get it right w/o it, but it does make me have cramps and go to ladies room. I may be overly sensitive to it, however.

I would try all above suggestions and see what works for you. If you're using only to sweeten coffee/drinks etc, splenda should work for you with out having bathroom problems.

Of course, the other issue will be to not use any artificial sweetners as they are real BAD for our bodies but we knew that already

Thanks everyone for your input!

I'm not so much worried about carb cravings because my carb levels are moderate and I'm not having any cravings there.

I am more concerned about gastrointestinal stuff. I've had enough problems with that lately and I am scared to death to have any artificial sweeteners because of that- but I really would like a little something in my coffee, you know?
