Alternative to Tuna fish? (worried about mercury)

I used to love tunafish but stopped buying it because of the mercury content. Is there a good alternative?

You can purchase flaked, boneless, skinless salmon. It's marketed as healthier tuna but the same mild taste.

Also the tuna that is the highest in Mercury is the Albacore (white tuna), the cheaper tuna is not as big of a risk.

I have read on numerous occasions to add cilantro to the tuna and it helps get rid of the mercury.

What fawn said! Canned wild salmon is amazing stuff. Almost all canned salmon is wild caught I think. Tastes better than tuna (a lot less dry!) and is wonderful right out of the can. It's reasonably priced and comes in the big 15 oz cans. I eat way too much of it, LOL.

I avoid canned tuna because they now add soy to it.

There's a great canned organic/natural turkey. Can't remember the brand (something Fresh? Valley something?) but they sell it at Costco and I think I saw it at SuperTarget. Anyhow, it's all turkey, no preservatives, no soy. I've been using it in place of tuna and it's great stuff!

Canned wild caught Alaskan salmon. I buy several cans a week. I make a salmon salad (just like tuna salad, only with salmon) and it's awesome. I serve it over zoodled zucchini noodles. YUM!

Thanks MG! Oh yum, I can't wait to try this!

I wonder if you can buy this at the grocery store or do I need to look for it at the health store?

Hey DC,
I buy this at my grocery store. Look on the label, it should say "wild caught Alaskan salmon" on it.

I use the things in it that I used to put in my tuna salad and it tastes DELISH!!

BTW, I drain the liquid (salt water), but I keep the skin and bones (they are soft and VERY good for you) and dump the can into the food processor with the other ingredients and pulse it up.

canned wild salmon is terrific as is canned trout (Trader Joe's). the tin looks like a sardine tin, but does not look or taste like sardines!

Zoodles and Salmon Stirfry

Hey y'all,

I made a quick lunch for hubby and myself with our garden-fresh zucchini.

I zoodled 2 medium zukes (skin and seeds) and tossed them in a preheated wok with extra virgin olive oil and minced garlic. I added a diced organic green pepper, 1 (drained) can of wild caught Alaskan salmon, a dollop of horseradish mustard, salt and pepper and about 1/2 cup of Parmesan cheese. It was DEEEELISH!! (You can add red peppers, mushrooms, spinach, anything else you desire!)

That sounds delicious MG! Did you use fresh parmesan or the kind in the green can?

I love canned salmon too. I also find that chicken salad is a good sub for tuna salad. I prefer to grill strips of chicken breast, then chop it up for salads. Some people will by a rotisserie chicken and shred it for chicken salad. I tried canned chicken, but..... I did not like it at all!

BTW, I read that chunk light tuna has less mercury in it. I still eat tuna, but very infrequently. I don't think it's a problem if you eat it once in a while. And I found some soy-free tuna at the health food store.

Well, for this quick lunch, I used grated Parm (green can). I prefer the real stuff, but it's pretty expensive around here.

Me too. The brand I buy is Natural Sea and is only .99 for a can of the chunk light.

The first time I got a can of salmon I wasn't expecting the bones. I got a little grossed out, especially the spinal column, all those vertebrae ewww...

nan, if you put it in a food processor, the bones provide you calcium and phosphorus....they are pressure cooked so they become soft and are easy to digest.

I like the tiny shrimp myself but it is expensive and only buy it when its on sale.

They have canned ham, turkey, and chicken (with no salt added) at my local Stop n'Shop.

Yeah, I don't have a food processor. So I picked out most of the vertebrae and the skin. Then mashed it all up with a fork. "Mmmm...calcium" is what I thought of the rest of the bones.

I love mackeral, and make it like tuna salad. I can eat the whole can- about 3 fat little mackeral! Not sure about mercury content, but it is also a good food fish.

I stick to canned chunk light tuna. The *light* tuna is most generally skipjack tuna, a smaller fish that does not live nearly as long as your average albacore tuna. Therefore it's possible mercury content is much smaller than the albacore for the simple reason that it l
