Just had half a can for a bed time snack. It was honestly hard not to eat the whole thing. Your recipe sounds great, MG!

Dreamchaser, canned salmon is also great for salmon cakes/burgers. Try it and you will be hooked!
OK, the bones are kind of freaking me out. Do they really taste good?

How did you eat your half a can Lauren, just straight out of the can?

Oh, salmon cakes/burgers. I'd like to try that. Is there a recipe for it?

Agree with everyone on the canned wild salmon. In the UK you can get this in the local supermarket. Canned sardines are also good - again, they have the bones which you can eat and are a good source of calcium. I like these quite simple - with a bit of olive oil and vinegar and in a salad. Or you can mix in with mayo too. My understanding re. mercury is that the smaller the fish the better off you are. Someone suggested tinned mackerel but that also has quite high levels of mercury (although a few times a week is OK).

Not for me, the bones would freak me to - I just couldn't do it.

I stick to the tuna and eat at least 3 to 4 cans a week.

What brand of salmon do you guys like? I'm asking because I know that from my tuna days, the brand and the type of fish makes a BIG difference in the taste!

I went to the grocery and found these 3 kinds:

Black Top Red Salmon ($2.38 for 7.5 ounces)

Pillar Rock Red Salmon ($5.59 for 14.75 ounces)

Chicken of the Sea Salmon ($5.39 for 14.75 ounces) - Didn't notice exactly which kind of salmon that was.

I didn't buy any of them because after just glancing at the cans, I didn't notice that any of them said (wild) on it. However, now that I have looked at the information about them on the internet, it looks that all of those brands are wild caught.

So is "wild caught" the only thing I need to check or is there something else I need to be looking for in terms of quality?

What's your favorite brand and type of salmon?

They do taste good! They kind of "melt in your mouth," LOL. More of a soft, yielding crunch. Sounds sensual, doesn't it?

I am super lazy when it comes to non-desserts, so yeah, right out of the can with a fork is how I usually enjoy salmon.

Pink Q and Wal-Mart brand are the cheapest in my area. As long as the can says "wild caught" (even in tiny print on the back), you're golden.

This recipe is wonderful, with parm cheese subbing for the bread crumbs and oat or almond flour subbing for the coating. Dill and fennel are also nice additions. Hopefully you can find some more reasonably priced brands because this stuff is addictive.

I wouldn't do canned products as the aluminum in the cans cause their own problems. You can buy and have wild flash-frozen Alaskan Salmon sent to you from Alaska. It is a little more expensive but health-wise (& flavor-wise too), it is soooo worth it.

And eat the skin. It contains the majority of the healthy fats.

Thanks for all of the great info Lauren! OK, I need to check out the can closer to find the words "wild caught". You would think they would put it in big letters as a selling point but apparently they don't.

I'm still sqeamish at the thought of the bones but I will probably have to give it a try any way because I'm too curious. Wish me luck though because I'm kinda scared about it!

That recipe for the salmon cakes looks delish!

I checked the health food store prices and they were outrageous. A very small can for 4 something and some cans that were even tinier and more expensive than that one! I still have another grocery store that I can check, and of course I've got super Walmart which I haven't checked yet either. Surely, I can find some better prices.

I haven't had canned salmon yet. I have only tried salmon served in restaurants like Outback, Texas Roadhouse and Red Lobster. I actually didn't love it when I tried it but I did like it. It was OK. I was choosing it more for the nutritional value than I was for the taste. I am a major ribeye girl though and usually when I was eating the salmon, I was thinking of the ribeye that I was missing out on instead!

In your opinion - does canned tuna taste similar to canned salmon?
I haven't had it for a long time but I used to LOVE the canned albacore tuna mixed with mayo as a tuna salad. I'd like to do the same with the salmon and mix it with mayo for a salmon salad. I'm hoping that the "salmon salad" will taste similar to tuna salad with no mercury as an added bonus!

Even the frozen wild salmon at the health store is too expensive for me (around $8.50 a pound). There's NO WAY I could afford to have fresh salmon sent to me from Alaska!

It does sound fabulous though!

CloverLeaf and Gold Seal, both have boneless cans, ask your supermarket for them,

Good question My_Sharona. Hopefully someone will answer that.

donnie - Thanks! I think maybe I'm going to try both the boneless and the bones.

My_Sharona - I would try checking out the website of the brand of the salmon you are using. I found that when I did that, I found a lot more information than I did just from looking at the can.

Thanks Dreamchaser, I went to their website. I usually buy Goal Seal .

All our salmon products are made from fresh, 100% wild Pacific salmon caught in the cold northern waters of the Pacific Ocean.

I guess its "wild caught".

BTW, I drain the liquid (salt water), but I keep the skin and bones (they are soft and VERY good for you) and dump the can into the food processor with the other ingredients and pulse it up.
I can't stand the little bones in the wild canned salmon. I never thought though to put it in the food processor. Does that make it smooth like tuna salad?
