My first time here
This is my first time on this website...I've been carb free since the 4th of July 2008. I have lost 7 pounds so far and still counting....but I have a question...is it ok to eat salads? They seem to really "bloat" me...

Well first off
![]() ![]() ![]() Not sure what plan you are doing but if it's atkins make sure to get the book dated 2002 or earlier. What is on your salad? Did you eat salads before July 4? could you post a menu......? |

Welcome!
Maybe as you get more used to salads, they may bother you less. ![]() Sometimes they bloat me, too. I just try to eat smaller amounts of salad. It seems to help. Welcome again. |

Molly.....you're gonna hear over and over...'Read the book!'. For those of us that have been here a while, it is obvious from your question that you've not read any book on low carbing.
Please, please, please...do yourself the biggest favor possible and read the book for the plan you are going to do. Only then will you have an idea of what to do and how to do it right. Ok, off my soapbox and to answer your question....yes, salads are ok. In fact...salads are highly recommended! Now then...WHAT you put on and in those salads makes a big, big difference. The salad dressing (if you use it) has to be of the right type, and NOT 'low fat' or 'reduced fat' type because they add sugar to that dressing to make up for the taste difference. Read the label on the salad dressing to get a carb count and to make sure it isn't too high.

You are all correct...I haven't read any of the books. Ok, I'll read. As far as my salad. I put a lot of chicken or tuna in them. I'm thinking the bloating is because I am not used to eating a lot of salads. Thank you for telling me fat free, low fat and reduced fat dressings are not good for me. I always purchase fat free. I will watch from now on. I have a lot to learn. Maybe I better read the books....

Another friendly reminder to read a book.
I have read many, many LC books and I get something different out of each. The main one, of course is the Atkins book. It has been through many rewrites and older tends to be better. Myself, I don't care much for Dr. A's writing style. I like Protein Power by two drs named Eades. A good explanation of the hows and whys of carb addiction and intolerance can be found in The Carbohydrate Addicts Diet book (I can't remember the authors- another married couple). I didn't have success with their plan (many do though), but the information was interesting. I think it is more important to know HOW and WHY carb restriction works than the basic rules of the plan. The different macronutrients work very differently in your body. You need to know what's going on in there. There are many books I haven't read and I'm sure you will get more suggestions here. Get thee to a library! ![]()

HOW much salad are you eating?
I know you are getting and reading the book right now (Atkins 2002 or earlier versions if you are doing the Atkins plan) In the meantime be advised that if you are doing Atkins Induction you can have 20g of carbs a day as mentioned above. Salad should be 2 cups of salad greens a day plus 1 cup low carb vegetables. The rest of your carbs will come from dairy during the induction period. So if you are eating more than 3 cups of salad greens a day that is probably too much for the induction period. (ps-readthebook)

If you ever have questions about what you're eating, just post a typical day's menu.
Also, if you need recipe and food suggestions, ask that as well. There are a lot of knowledgeable folks here. |
