How much are you paying for your grass fed beef?

Not based on hanging weight.

As in final, packaged, frozen cost per pound to you - what are you paying?

DH and I pretty much just eat ground beef. He doesn't care for steak and we eat more wild salmon, chicken and eggs really but I pay $5.99 a lb. for my grass fed ground beef.

Similar - I'm looking at about 5-6 dollars per pound for smaller amounts (CSA - includes shipping) for a cross section of all cuts and about 4.50 per pound for 1/2 steer split with friends.

Hi fawn - Wow, $5.99 a pound sounds expensive! I would think that being in California, since you have greater access to healthy food, that you would be able to find it cheaper than that! Wow, your hubby doesn't care for steak! Do you like it? How much are you paying for your wild salmon?

I just found out about a farm who sells a quarter of a cow (100% grass fed) for $2.75 a pound hanging weight. This ends up being approximately $3.50 a pound as the final cost. That sounds pretty awesome to me!

happy to see this topic come up again - as we too, are trying to find less expensive ways to fund our healthy habits. as much as we strongly believe in it, organic, grassfed, uncured, etc etc - are really breaking the bank for us these days.

$5.99 is probably what we pay too, though we have found it for $4.99. the flavor difference imho makes it totally worth it. we often add beans to the mix, add spices, and have delicious taco meat.
i just had a grass-fed ribeye last night and it was seriously amazing.

OK, I wish I could edit my original post but it won't let me.

Instead of just giving the final cost like I originally asked, could you please list what you are paying for both the hanging weight AND the final cost?

Buying grass fed meat is new to me so I am trying to learn about all of this.

$4.50 or $4.99 a lb at Super Target for the 85/15 and 90/10, respectively. They also have buffalo from the same company, but it doesn't say grass-fed.

i've found this link Fawn posted awhile ago really helpful!

Eat Wild

yes, Dreamchaser, it was awesome! the week before hubby and i had regular ribeyes from kroger, it just really can't compare...
i am on a budget as well. i do understand the cost factor, as it is for me as well. buying in larger quantities is often a way to reduce costs. free range grassfed chicken and eggs are sometimes less per lb and really quite good, too. The yolk of the eggs are really orange!

I can get it less expensive here right now if I purchase a much larger amount. DH like I said does not like steaks (unless it's terras major) and that is over $20 per pound so he gets that on special occasion. I don't eat much beef to be honest with you all. The expense is too much for me at this time. For me to eat 95% organic/free range, I must make my choices wisely.

tammy, I'm waiting for my wild alaskan salmon from a dear friend and I'll probably pay about $5 a pound for that which is exceptional....it pretty much just pays for the shipping. Lately, I've been eating wild coho from Trader Joes at about $7 a pound if I had to guess and of course my eggs come from my neighbor......I just viisited my hen friends this morning.

well, it's not all the same thing. not with the horrible factory farms.

for me personally, it also has to do with the health and welfare of the animals, my own health & welfare is a welcome bonus.

did you know that ordinary feedlots sometimes feed their beef cattle OLD CARDBOARD just to 'fatten them up" quicker? and then they pump them full of pepto bismal to help with the resulting indigestion. the other corn & crap & hormones & antibiotics they feed cattle is a bunch of garbage too.

cattle are much healthier & happier eating grass & hay. and the result is leaner beef, tastier beef, and beef that is higher in Omega 3.

and for me, the I don't want animals to have to suffer just to end up on my plate. I strongly believe that we ARE what we eat. and I prefer to eat humanely and as cleanly as possible.

Also - what our 98 year old grandparents ate long ago as they were developing as children probably doesn't have the hormones and chemicals we have to enjoy today!

And for me - with my infant daughter, I will strive to give her "what was good enough for my grandparents" - home gardened or locally grown veggies and beef that's not pumped full of drugs and pesticides. First for her, then for me, if we can afford it.

I think this is a topic where people will have to agree to disagree. There are those who either cannot afford or do not care, like yourself, dnyoung, and there are those who are trying to find the best sources for quality food as we all individually choose to define it. And nope, I don't own birkenstocks. But, I do want organic food.

I hear you fawn. It is so tough trying to work out the budget to be able to afford what we really need, isn't it?! I am actually not eating much meat right now either except for my ground beef, which as you know from my other thread, is not 100% grass fed. That's why I'm working extremely hard to find a good source and one that is very affordable! I'm definitely on a meat mission right now!

Wow, that certainly is a phenomenal price you are getting for the wild alaskan salmon! I haven't tried it but I believe that my health food store is selling it for $8.19 a pound. And that's very cool that you are able to buy your eggs from your neighbor. We should all be so lucky!

After seeing everyone's responses, it looks like my $2.75 a pound hanging weight which turns out to be about $3.50 a pound final cost is turning out to be quite a fantastic bargain! I am pretty darn happy about that! Now if I can just find someone to go in on it with me. (I'm still working on that one)!

Dreamchaser - well done. Lowest I found was $3 hanging weight, and that was for a whole steer. I do have to laugh - since I'll be going in on this with friends at work, they'll have to deliver the whole thing here for us to divvy up. Slightly non-PC, I do work with a several Indian consultants - I can imagine the looks on their face when the UPS man brings in a few hundred pounds of beef. That being said, several of these guys who started as vegetarians have come over to the dark side, as indicated by the Burger King wrappers I see.

Ditto Fawn

I'm one of those elitist pr***s that shops at Whole Foods because their organic and grass fed meats and cheeses are not just good for me but they are tastier. I've come to the point in my life that I'll spend extra for quality. Ditto Fawn on the price $5.99--but sometimes its on sale. We eat a lot of bison too. Doesn't say on the label, as someone mentioned, its grass fed--but I'll bet it is. Heard a chef today on the radio that says for a real versatile meat in trying economic times that he thinks organic leg of lamb is the way to go. He fed his family with 3 kids 5 different meals with one--curried kabobs, lamb burgers, a soup, meatballs, shaved with BBQ sauce....I love lamb--he gave me ideas. At any rate I think its great we are beginning to question our food supply. Also, I doubt seriously that my grandparents ever ate vegetables grown any farther than 5 miles from their house. Most came from their own garden 9 months of the year. I go to an organic truck farm less than 20 miles from my house. i breeze right through the produce section at Kroger...my farm is cheaper anyway. And also another ditto to Fawn--dmyoung805, your comments were immature.
