Realization about my fat

I've been chubby most of my life, probably around middle school I started porking out. But I just assumed it was because I'm lazy, never did sports, and ate too much. It was just who I was. It was drilled in everybody's head. Calories in, calories out. Mucho food + little exercize = Fat. Simple math, really. All my siblings (5 of them) are all pretty much thin. One of my brothers could eat 6 big macs and stay in his size 32" jeans. Thats just the way it was, not because he was super active, not because of a behavioral trait, it just was. I was fat because of my behaviors, clearly.

The best thing that has happened to me is reading "Good Calories, Bad Calories" by Gary Taubes. In the first few chapters I realized that I'm not fat because I"m lazy and a horse-hog-pig. I am fat because I put the wrong fuel in my body. I didn't understand how the body processes food, what will happen if I put a high carbohydrate food in my body. I didn't know.

And knowing now how things work I feel so impowered. I feel stronger.
Sometimes I get bummed out because I still have a long way to go but I know low carb isn't magic, I know how it work. And that makes it darn near impossible to go back to my old way of eating or even the standard low fat/calorie diet.

I can't even express my admiration for Mr. Taubes! He is my hero, he really is.

I would cat fight you for Mr. Taubes LOL

Isn't it almost a relief to learn this??

I sometimes feel like I have a winning lottery ticket in my back pocket.. knowing what I know and learning more about it every day.

All those years of beating ourselves up over something we really did not have any control over.... now it is time to move forward and forget about all of that

If we were not fat, (thin like your Brothers and my Sister)... would we be here today? Probably not, and probably would still be eating crap and doing neither of us any good health wise.

I also recommend Barry Groves: Natural Health & Weight Loss.

It is a much easier read than Taube's book, and has the same message.

They both really made a difference in my WOE this time around

I just can't believe its simple science and the "modern" medical/diet communities do not want to believe it even though it was widely accepted 100 years ago. It blows my mind. It really does.

Imagine the global economic impact this knowledge would have if it became mainstream.

From Pharmaceuticals to the health industry, oil and manufacturing to agriculture and farming.

The junk food industry ALONE, if it were to collapse, would cause a global upheaval.

I can totally relate to feeling empowered after reading Taubes, somethingblue2u! Used to think it was just my pathetic lack of self control that enabled me to eat way too much of xy or z sugary junk food. Now that I know what carbs do to the body and fat storage mechanisms, it's all clear now. We can make use of this knowledge to take control of our eating habits and health now. It's a great feeling! Such good motivation for staying on plan.

I definitely feel the same way you do. Reading that book was very empowering. 5 years ago, when I started Atkins for the first time, I was thinking of low carb as merely a weight-loss mechanism. I had no idea at the time how bad sugar really is for us. Reading Taubes really made it hard for me to want to revert to my old ways!

Oh, you're singing my song too. I have read it twice already and know I'll return to it time and again. It's like everything makes sense now....like the pieces of a really obscure confusing jigsaw puzzle have fallen into place. And the thing that I've discovered for myself is that I really don't even care if others understand or believe....I know for me it rings true and that's the most important thing for me.

There's another book that sounds to be similar to Taubes book that I have on order. Author is James Carlson, title is Genocide: How your doctor's dietary ignorance will kill you. Heard him interviewed by Jimmy Moore and it sounded like a book worth reading.

Just the other night I watched the Charlie Rose interview Taubes did with Ornish and the lead Dr. of the American Heart Association. Although I have read Taubes, hearing his words vs that of the "establishment" was comforting and really drove things home.

It does my heart good that you brought up this topic Blue. I don't feel so quite alone!

The article he wrote for the NY Times a couple years ago hooked me. The book was the icing on the cake. If I had a wish for every over weight and obese person in this world, it would be to read this book. It is eye opening and life changing. Taubes should get the Pulitzer or Nobel award!

ITA!!!

It's like "we" know a secret but it's one we want to share if people would listen! But most people just don't get it.

DH and I have been married 12 years, and he has watched me struggle so much with trying to lose weight. He'd say, you just need to cut back and work out, it's not hard! He's never had a weight problem until recently. I'd try to cut back and work out but I'd be so hungry and my BS would have such horrible swings that I always caved. He in so many words implied that I just didn't want to make an effort to lose the weight.

I have since found LC and am down 73 lbs and have 27 to goal. DH has finally changed his tune when it comes to ME but not others.

He has an obese co-worker who he doesn't get along with (not because they are obese ). Last night we got into the discussion of this persons weight because they are having a WL contest at their place of employment. DH goes on to say this man is lazy, is greedy, and eats too much I tried to explain to DH that wasn't the whole truth, this person probably like me before and most others hasn't been taught how to properly feed their body and doesn't understand that the whole low fat, high carb this is a lie. This man was doing the vegetarian thing for the WL contrest until DH said he broke down and went to McDs and bought 5 sandwiches, fries, and a soda. I was telling DH that was most likely a binge due to being deprived, been there myself many, many times.

Of course you can't tell DH anything so we went round and round about it and I finally just dropped it but I think many, many people feel this way and I feel so thankful that I finally learned the secret!

Thanks for your post, Blue. I can identify with your porking out in middle school, for sure. I also fed my body the wrong stuff for years and didn't even realize it. D'oh.

Taubes is next on my reading list after Natural Health and Weight Loss. I can't wait to read it!!!

Sort of on topic about eating more fat:

I have lost 34lbs since March 18. Of course some people noticed, but nobody really ever asks me how I am doing it. The few who have, mention WW and when they do I will just say 'low carb'. They of course have all kinds of excuses why they could never go low carb.

So, this weekend, one of the bridesmaids in the wedding party, ALSO lost a lot of weight (she went from 140 to 122 in the last 4 months) to fit into her dress. The last week alone she dropped 6 POUNDS and of course looked fantastic. EVERYONE NOTICED and asked her what she did to lose it.

her answer?

2 hours on the treadmill every night for the last week.

an apple and water for breakfast

a banana and water for supper.

So, because she weighs 122lbs and lost so much weight in the last week, people are now going to try 'her diet'.

I just sat there.. at first feeling fat and dumb because I am the total opposite in my lifestyle, but then I realized that it will not be long before she is back up to 140lbs, maybe even more, and I felt bad for her. I KNOW people do not have to suffer and feel deprived to get thin, but people do NOT want to hear how easy it is if you just.cut.out.the.carbs. Suffering to them = success, but most of us know how short lived that success really is, and she has now forever lost that week of living to her treadmill and starvation.

The ONE person who came right out last month to ask me how I am doing it.. after I told her 'you don't want to hear it', she finally dragged it out of me and when I told her I eat more fat and less carbs you would have thought I told her I was eating my own children, and started raving about this 'shake' plan she was doing and how much better it was than any other diet. I saw her on Saturday at the wedding and she has packed on weight since that conversation, and she avoided me like the plague.

It really is too bad that weight control has so many social issues. I feel like an outsider most of the time wherever I go. But there will come a day when people realize that hey, maybe she IS doing something right... but right now nobody wants to hear it.

yeah I used to do that stuff too in my early 20's, weighed around 125 but was starving everyday, miserable & unhealthy..never really learned how to eat the right way. Been struggling with my weight my whole life, so sick of it.

Can't wait for my books to arrive!

The popular mentality is you are fat, you must deny yourself food and exercise yourself to exhaustion to pay for your over-indulgence, sloth and gluttany. Physical and mental punishment for our "bad" behaviors that gave us this medical condition.

I totally know what you are saying... Sometimes I want to jump up on the top of one of the isles with a mega-phone at the store and tell the whole world that I've found the "secret" .... yeah, that'll never happen... but I've actually dreampt about doing that!

I'm almost half way through GCBC by Taubes, and all I can say is wow... Wow, that it's so detailed and wow... that we were so WRONG about our diets for so long!!!

It's amazing how people just do stuff because somebody said so... [like eat low fat, and low protein]

I am somewhat of a "rebel" and so this fits me perfectly...

I have similar feelings about organized religion [but that's a whole 'nother show]

Anyway, PEOPLE, WE HAVE THE SECRET... IT FEELS WONDERFUL! and my signature below says it all....

And I agree... I'll never go back to low fat/low cal (no matter how I get tempted being such a slow loser!).

Thanks for this post.
