Yeah-I'm going to see if I can find it as well. It sounds so interesting and common sense, which is right up my alley! I'm glad it's been life-changing for you!

Be aware that GCBC is not an easy read. It is full of good information and way documented, but it took me awhile to get through it and I'm getting even more out of it the second time.

I think Taubes missed an opportunity here. I was already inclined to believe him and really wanted to read his book and it was difficult. I don't think the casual reader or someone who believes the low fat/low cal ideas we have been brainwashed with will stick it out to get his message. I wish he would have made it a little easier to read.

Hardly anyone writes an original book anymore though, so there will probably be fifteen more with the same message out soon.

He targeted this book towards grad students. I read somewhere there has been talk of a simplified version, but whether or not anything comes of it will depend on book sales of GCBC I bet.

Based on the recommendations here, last night I ordered Barry Groves' book. I really wanted both his book and Taubes but I'm trying to cut back on the spending and only got one. Maybe I can get the other book next month! I'm hoping it will come in before I leave for a conference I have to go to next week.

Barry Groves is a great jumping off point.

If you read his book first, Gary's is a little bit easier to follow.

I read Barry's Book in 3 days, Gary's I am only 1/3 of the way through and have been reading every night for about 2 weeks but it makes my brain tired LOL

Listening to Taubes lectures on the internet really makes reading the book a little more easy to follow. And he talks about stuff that his editors made him cut out of the book, the orignal book was about twice the size of what it is now. Could you imagine getting through that?! Eeek

Personally, I liked the fact that Taubes book wasn't "easy" to understand. Reading the book didn't make me feel like Taubes was talking to me like a 10 year old. And he has references...real peer reviewed references. Not just some silly "recomended reading" section in the back of the book.

Biology isn't an easy thing to understand. I get very suspicious when someone trys to explain it as though it is.

Each of Barry Grove's chapters were followed with an extensive list of references and studies

Maybe you are talking about a different book?

He said he was glad there were references, peer reviewed references... NOT just a bunch of recomended reading in the back....

I think you misread that

ah I more than likely did, thanks!

ETA: but he was talking about Taubes book when he said that, he had mentioned Barry grove's book earlier in the thread (and was not a huge fan of it) so I was assuming THAT book merely had the 'recommended reading' at the back of it (which I don't think is the case).

I read GCBC last year. I read an interview with Taubes about it, where he said that he'd decided to write it after the furious response he'd received over What If It's All Been a Big Fat Lie?, an article he wrote for the New York Times Sunday magazine in 2002. He'd been a science journalist for decades, but he got all these attacks on the grounds that, as someone who was not a medical doctor or nutritionist, he couldn't possibly know what he was talking about. So he wrote the book to marshall evidence from peer-reviewed academic studies that supported his argument.

Calm down Prozak. Groves is almost a hero to me. In an earlier thread I mentioned that I liked both the books Goves and Taubes wrote, but merely prefered Taubes.

Yes, Groves does have references and they are detailed. That's what I like about him. And it's why I'm now following his diet recomendations. Ok kiddo? I'm on your side.

Here is a link to a lecture Mr. Taubes gave at Berkeley, if you haven't seen it. His book has become my bible.

It is accepted that people are different in so many ways and areas of life.
Why then are so many rigid that everyone does best with one way of eating?
I have long believed that some do best eating mostly proteins and some do
best eating mostly carb. My Grandfather was thin as a rail and loved fat so
much he would eat the fat others cut off of their meat. He died from smoking,
lung cancer, but his heart and the rest of his body was in great shape. Even
within the low carb way of eating there is room for many differences. Find what
works for you and run with it.

While their are individual differences in hormones, etc... we aren't different species. Change human DNA by about 2% and you end up with a chimp.

I just finished the lecture, now I know why you say the book is not an easy read , but, it was very informative. BTW, I had to d/load Realplayer to get it to work. Very interesting, I hope more people read it, it seems to make so much sense to me.
