We have all been there and that is why we are here?? I still remember the looks...and "gentlemen" slamming of the doors in my face when i was large...now that I have lost weight they hold them open for me..what is the difference.. I was still a women and a person when I was fat...I pray Please Lord don't let me jugde others by the food in there cart....I know how easy it is to go back to bad habits!!! And gain it all back...

Yes.

If we can't poke fun in this little club, where can we? We've almost all been there, eating the whole cake at midnight. I don't take the joking to be all that mean spirited.

Yes and I am still the fat gal pushing the cart but no more Lean Cuisines, EggBeaters or skim milk. It's ribeyes, eggs and heavy cream now.

If I see an overweight person, I do sometimes take notice of what's in their cart. It's usually loaded an assortment of sweets, rice cakes, diet soda, low fat mayo. They are actually doing what they have been told - cutting fat. I feel for them because they're destined to fail going that route. I failed over & over & over doing that.

Hi nicik,
I know what you're saying. And right now the size I am, is the "thorn in my side" so that I don't ever look down on anyone who is my size or heavier.
And I hope when I make my goal, that I never look down on anyone.

i always read other people's carts. You can see if they live alone, or in a larger household. You can usually see what sort of diet that they eat. If I have to get something weird, I love to put it up on the belt with something that will raise eyebrows.

I find it rather pathetic. I know I shop for a house of people, not just myself. I eat low carb but buy some higher carb snacks for others. No one has any right to judge me by my cart. I would never conceive of doing such a thing let alone coming to a bulletin board for weight loss to cackle about it. How sad.

Part of looking is to get a mental jolt for something that I may have forgotten, as only 1 of 5 people can write anything on the list... But, the other 4 will call my cell and fuss...

I have to say that I'm pretty sure I've read all of the threads in question, and I think it's a matter of perspective. I personally didn't perceive a cruel, mocking, judgemental tone in those posts, and I certainly didn't hear cackling. I heard "I've found this great plan and I wish I could shout it from the rooftops, but alas, I cannot because it's none of my darned business" and I read a lot of people who notice other's shopping carts and feel bad that those people don't know what we do (it's kinda like religion sometimes).

But again, it's perspective, and other people did "hear" negativity in those posts, so I think it's a good idea for us all to keep in mind the sensitivities of others when we post. That said, I think that it's also a good idea to avoid reading too much into others' posts, and making negative inferences about tone. Sometimes our personal baggage gets in the way and if we know we are prone to do that, it might be a good idea to just leave certain threads alone.

I think this is overall an amazing group of supportive people.

I've "Talked to myself" in front of the meats before, "No, this one is too low in fat. I can't have this one on my diet...." when someone's jaw drops, a conversation starts... I did this a lot a few years back when I was in really good shape.

Well some of the stuff I read came across as judgmental cackle. The thought of someone looking in my cart because of my weight is very sad to me. I eat better and exercise more then anyone I know. I am heavier because of thyroid problems...not because I eat twinkies. I work very hard at keeping my weight under control. My child loves a few carby snacks though, like lil Debbies, and you may find them in my cart. I don't eat them ever.

Agreed. But as you can see folk are sensitive.

IMO nothing wrong with looking at people's carts, seeing junk in them and thinking 'I wont be like them ever again'. True the junk might be for another family member... but even THEN it is still a reminder of what I used to pig out on and how I used to be. A good reminder for me.

I am guilty of looking in others people cart...but I am just nosy, I do not do it to be judgemental. Lots of times I will see something that looks good and it gives me ideas for recipes.

Not that it is good for me to be nosy though. It is just as wrong for me to be nosy as it is to be judgemental.

For the most part, when I check a cart it is usually someone who is thin. I like to see what they have. I used to wonder why they could get away with some of food that they got away with. Granted it might have been for others in their household. But I always hoped I could learn something about food from them.

Now I wonder what people think about me. I bought 4 pkg of bacon, 2 dozen eggs, heavy cream, various cheeses..... and I'm still a chunky girl. So they probably think poor girl, if she'd just eat less calories.........

All boards have repeat threads. How many times have you read THIS thread:

Newbie "I'm on induction, and eat 3 bars a day, and drink 3 shakes, and I eat 2 tortilla wraps and I'm stalled! Help meeeee!"
"Eat some real food!"
Newbie "You're so mean to meeeee!"
"Have you read the book?"
Newbie "I don't have time to read it, just tell me how to do it!"
<insert food list, and good outline here>
Newbie "Well, I can't eat the foods from THAT list! You don't understand! My life is different!"

AMEN! This is truer than true!!!! I am 340lbs and I would bet that someone at some time in the last month has thought "dang no wonder she is so big".

PLUS we have to remember that low carbers are themselves are judged from those who don't believe in it. We have to do what makes us happy.... maybe the fat lady in the grocery store w/ Pizza and chips is happy w/ her choices!

I think it was susaneye ( or something like that) that posted recently and did so in a " I wish I could help this lady at the gym way" but I have seen the post about the fat lady w/ the junk....to some what we have is JUNK!

We also have to remember that low carb is what works for US but there are lots of people that are successful on other plans such as weight watchers and chose to eat things we can't/don't and count the points!

I don't pay attention to other carts, usually because I don't have time while grocery shopping with my littles. I do notice those in front or behind me in the checkout line, though, that's kind of hard to miss with their stuff all laid out on the conveyer belt. I do feel sorry for those, (thin or not), with 100% junk packaged foods, only because I know how bad refined junk is for our bodies.

WOW!!! I am kind of scared to ask any questions anymore around here! I saw the friendly, good, constructive advice you gave that person today and then you turn around and post something like this? She asked a genuine question got some really good advice and then got stabbed in the back, huh! Not the first time I have seen something like that around here though.
