Omega 3's

I've noticed a lot of people here are not taking fish oils. Do you all realize the importance of a healthy omega 3 balance? It really is non-negotiable and in my humble opinion much more important than your multi vitamin. It reduces inflammation which contributes to heart disease, feeds your cells, helps your cognitive function including and not limited to depression, anxiety, thought process.......It is said that a childs IQ increases with the consumption of omega 3's and is reduced with the consumption of trans fats. I encourage you to research the beneficial and necessary values of omega 3's. Don't limit yourself to the knowledge of just carbohydrate restriction rather educate yourself to your EFA intakes. Here's a resource for your review. Basic Nutrition: Cod Liver Oil--The Number One Superfood

It is on my shopping list that I am taking to the local HFS today. I am taking a liquid vitamin/mineral supplement and the only thing missing from it is the Omega 3s. I have also added cinnamon for my blood sugar.

"Omega-3 doubly good for female brain power, but omega-6 makes girls dimmer
by William Atkins
Thursday, 03 July 2008

Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oil, are twice as effective in improving test scores for girls as boys, U.S. researchers have found. While this appears to confirm the theory that fish is brain food, the researchers also found that omega-6, found primarily in rapeseed, sunflower, palm, and soy oils, diminishes the power of the brain.

William Lessek (University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) and Steve Baulin (University of California, Santa Barbara) used data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

The survey was conducted in the United States on 4,000 children between the ages of six and sixteen years.

Lessek and Baulin already knew that omega-3 (formally called n-3 fatty acids), which is found in cold water oily fish such as salmon, herring, mackerel, anchovies, and sardines, is important for both men and women to develop intelligence while growing up as children.

However, they wondered if omega-3 might be even more important for women because, besides helping to build strong brains, it also is transferred from pregnant mothers to their fetuses through body fat—also providing nutrients to grow strong brains in babies.

As reported by New Scientist magazine (June 28-July 4, 2008), Lessek states, “The lower body fat is like a bank into which deposits are made during childhood and only withdrawn during pregnancy and nursing.” [New Scientist: “Omega-3s twice as important for girls as boys” (page 18)]

By using the cognitive test scores provided by the NHANES, their results showed that omega-3 fatty acids is beneficial for both boys and girls in developing intelligence within their brains.

The really important news announced by the two scientists is that omega-3 was found to be twice as important for girls as it is for boys.

There is a down side, however--at least for girls.

On the negative side, Lassek and Gaulin found that the more omega-6 fatty acids (formally called n-6 fatty acids) that the girls consumed versus omega-3, the less they scored on the cognitive tests.

In other words, the more omega-6 consumed over omega-3, the less the brain develops within girls.

The two researchers did not find that the intelligence of boys were affected in the same way—they did not seem to be adversely affected by consuming more omega-6 over omega-3.

The two researchers presented their conclusions at the twentieth annual meeting of the Human Behavior and Evolution Society (HBES), which was held in Kyoto, Japan, between June 4-8, 2008.

The New Scientist article also states that the average U.S. citizen consumes about ten times more omega-6 than omega-3.

The article continues to explain that such huge amounts of omega-6 negate any positive effects of omega-3 within the human body.

I have noticed a great improvement in my speech, etc. since I started taking an EFA supplement at the start of induction

If any of y'all in TX (or Mexico) go to HEB or Central Market, they have a good supplement that I use. It's called Complete Omega Complex, with EFAs from borage, fish, and flax oils (400 mg of each per gelcap) sourced from non-GMO supplies.

The "complete" supplement was a great thing for me to find, as I'm a person who is just starting to get into the wide world of supplements gets a bit confusing at times, but ya gotta start somewhere I suppose

Mine won't take pills/capsules yet, either. I even tried the strawberry ones that I got as samples from Vitamin SHoppe, but no go.

To help decide what flavor clo to get, I called Vitamin Shoppe ahead of time and asked what flavors of clo they carried. . .then I asked my 2 DS's what flavor they would like to have. Lemon-lime was the winner, and they take it right off the spoon at night time.

It helped that I explained to them why they were going to be taking it and how it would help them stay more focused and be able to stay on task better at school (they're 4 and 6). It seemed to help them knowing "why", b/c they weren't too thrilled with the taste at first. They still have a little swig of water after they take it.

I found this article....

"Looking at flax oil for health benefits? Well, if you want all those miraculous results that numerous scientific studies attribute to omega 3 oils, you can’t get them from flax. How do I know? The research says so!

In a recent study, published in the peer-reviewed, highly respected American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, scientists studied, in depth, all of the many valid studies done on omega 3 oils. They concluded that NONE of the benefits came from flax. So, what’s the bottom line on omega 3 research? The multitude of amazing health benefits all come from fish oil – not flax oil.

And what are those amazing omega 3 fish oil health benefits? Here’s a partial list: a reduced risk of both heart disease and stroke; less inflammation and pain from rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, colitis, psoriasis, PMS, injuries and gout; a lower risk of breast and prostrate cancer; prevention of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes; better brain development; and a lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Wow!

So, how come more people don’t know the important distinction between fish oil and flax? That’s easy – it’s marketing. Flax is a cheap omega 3 oil. Sellers can give it a higher mark up and make more money. Therefore, they try to lead you to believe you can get the same results with flax that you can only get from omega 3 fish.

Why can’t you get the results from flax oil? Flax doesn’t have the essential omega 3 fatty acids necessary to produce the results. Two of the main ones are DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). These essential omega 3 fatty acids and the important balance of fatty acids in omega 3 fish are what the beneficial results are attributed to.

“But,” cry the marketers, “you’re body can manufacturer DHA and EPA from the ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) that’s found in flax.” Technically this is true. But, in actuality, only 1/2 of 1% of the ALA consumed can be converted into DHA and EPA. And even this tiny amount requires a good digestive system, ideal conditions and a complex conversion process. Considering the fact that more money is spent in this country on digestive aids than on public school education, ideal circumstances are rare.

But, even if they exist, to get the DHA and EPA found naturally in a 3 oz. serving of omega 3 rich salmon (the richest source), a person would have to drink gallons of flax seed oil. And that would be a very bad idea, since side effects include inflammation, an increased risk of prostate cancer, loose stools and flatulence.

Here’s more facts about flax. Most of the “studies” used by the flax seed industry to support their outrageous product claims are either anecdotal or based on questionable test tube and animal studies. There have never been any long term, double blind, placebo controlled, peer reviewed human studies that found any nutritional benefits for flax seed oil. It’s also interesting to note that the most aggressive promoters are from Canada, the world’s largest producer and exporter of flax.

Since all valid research proves you can only get the phenomenal omega 3 health benefits from fish, it only makes good sense to choose a pure, high quality fish oil supplement with balanced DHA and EPA. Preferably, the source should be wild salmon from the cold, clean waters of the North Atlantic.

You can check out my highest recommendation at the Fish Oil web site.
