I found a few years back that I can keep my meds for 2 chronic conditions down to 50%, or LESS if I stay around 20-40 grams total! So, extended induction girlie here too!

Coffee only has carbs unless chickory has been added. Check it out at the usda.gov site.

Fitday lists carbs in coffee. Fractional, yes, but a bag of penny candy can add up to over a buck too. Little things add up!

8 oz brewed decaf coffee .984 grams carb
8 oz brewed coffee .984 grams carb

For someone who really does best to stay under 30 grams, wasting a gram per 8 oz isn't worth it often. If I eat more veggies I'm better. I do drink SOME coffee, but I no longer start my day by sucking down a whole pot.

Again, from earlier in the thread:

The Fitday numbers are OLD, from the old USDA numbers.

Coffee carbs can't creep, nor can the fractions add up, since coffee has NO carbs.
0x0 will ALWAYS be 0. The number doesn't get bigger exponentially. It is still 0.

But if there are 2 calories per 8 oz and a person drinks 1/2 gallon of coffee a day (that's not unheard of), we are talking 16 calories. That's 4 carbs and is known as carb creep. Granted, most people stop way before 1/2 gallon, but it's like those mini moo things - .75 carbs times 12 little tubs throughout the day = 9 carbs unaccounted for.
Why would 16 calories be 4 carbs?

Coffee isn't *like* the cream. There IS something to count in cream, so it can creep.

I am noticing that sometimes in the evening I want something sweet mentally and a cup of decaf works.

Do you count the carbs in ALL of your coffee?

No, but I probably should.

Even if you drank 6 cups of coffee it would only be .42 carbs-a minimal amount.

Perhaps at this point we can agree that YMMV, and that should ultimately be the deciding factor. :-)

If there is no fat and no protein, the calories leftover can only be considered a carbohydrate. 4 calories per carb.

I'm only doing math. I will not argue this. And I do count carbs in coffee. You don't have to.

There is .04 g of fat and .21 g of protein. Glad you found what works for you-YMMV.

I don't count the carbs in coffee at all. It gives me enough energy that I burn those off anyway

No need to argue, it's fat and protein. I think I'll just take the opinion of the USDA nutrition scientists, thanks.

True, but following the recommendations of the USDA through the 70s and 80s is one of the reasons I hit 247 pounds back then. Their newer food pyramid is looking a little better, though, at least for somebody in maintenance, but I'm not there quite yet.

when i have only 1 small coffee

which is 99% of the time, i do not count the coffee itself. i don't use enough cream or 1/2 & 1/2 for it to register, and i use no artificial sweetener at all. if i should have a 2nd cup that day, then i add a gram, just to be on the safe side to avoid carb creep. i may be a creep (i can live with that), but carb creep i cannot deal with. Coffee has 'coffee oil' thats what gives it its taste and smell.

Quote:
What exactly does roasting do? The sugars, fats and starches that are within the bean are emulsified, caramelized and released. This creates the delicate coffee oil. This oil is what gives coffee its distinctive aroma and taste.

I can't believe I just read 70-something posts on whether or not coffee has a fraction of a carb.

The carbs in my coffee didn't get me to this weight, it was all the donuts I ate with it.
