I couldn't understand why coffee would have carbs because we aren't eating the coffee beans, but then again some people still feel it has carbs and some believe it doesn't.

That is really strange about coffee shop coffee...what the heck do they add? I guess I will stay away from coffee shops!

I did know that instant had more carbs, but then again, I never drink instant. I never liked it.

Starbucks might be taking their nutrition information from a source that denotes a serving of coffee or a shot of espresso as having carbs. On their website, they state that the nutrition info is "calculated using ESHA Research's Genesis® R&D software, and rounded to meet FDA regulations." Hmmmmmm

I used to work for Starbucks; there's nothing in the brewed coffee or espresso shots besides beans and water Now the beverages with milk or the blended beverages . . . that's carb city!

I think a stronger brew technique like one used at a coffeeshop (different beans-to-water ratio than a typical home brew) would have more coffee solute (I think that's the right word), and therefore more fiber, not necessarily sugar, which is why some tests might have shown there to be carbs in coffee.

Boy, I wish it wasn't so late, I'd brew up a pot right now, all this coffee talk is making me want some

Every 6 months or so we do this. Coffee has NO carbs.

Here is the USDA page. http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/

Oh, I ran the numbers for 100 6 oz cups. Still zero carbs.

Never have counted them. Never will count them. Don't even count the carbs in my eggs. Never have. Never will.

Hey, I'm down 58 lbs by counting neither so obviously, it has worked for me!

This means there are 2 calories in 8 oz., "calorie" is a shortened form of the actual unit of measurement, "kilocalorie" or "kcal"

With all the links to this database we have in this thread, it better not be happening again in another 6 months

But thats OK, we are all newbies once. Most questions cycle. We just need to remember that when we all joined we were the same.

Do you mean you count what you put in it? DEFINITELY, we don't want to confuse anyone. As for the coffee itself there is nothing to count. Or creep.

Thanks for everyone's input. But GOSH I cannot believe how many people have gotten upset by the question itself. I wasn't meaning to debate if there is/isn't carbs in coffee, but curious as to how many count vs don't count. If the topic is annoying or upsets someone, they shouldn't read and/or post. I have been LC'ing since 2002 and back when I started, everyone counted the carbs in coffee...

Some things change after reasearch/studies etc. Some people subtract fiber, some don't. Some believe in the 'yogurt exception' some don't. Some count carbs in coffee, some don't etc etc.

I am not a newbie, but I could definately see how a newbie may be intimidated to post after seeing how some people post replies. I can tell you one thing, I don't think I will be posting a topic again.

Don't ever be intimidated by someone else's rudeness. It's a very intelligent question, and one I've asked myself. I ask "dumb" questions on here all the time. The questions happen to be important to me, so if someone gets all bent outta shape about it, that's their trip.

I think it's a fabulous post!

just my opinion, but I don't think anyone in here got upset or was rude...

for one, I am glad to learn there's no carbs in coffee, so thanks for raising the question and thanks to all of the responders!

PS, I'd always counted 1 carb & 5 cals (for 8 oz) per this Atkins link: Atkins - Carb Counter

I am a coffee with my cream kind of person so I had to cut back. That is until I found "Mini Moos" by Land O' Lakes. They are individual half & half's that, according to the packaging, have no carbs!!! I can have as many as I like.

I really hate to burst your bubble, but anything packaged (cream; salad dressing; etc) that states 0 carbs usually always has some hidden carbs...

Legally, manufacturers do not have to list carbs (if under 1 carb) so 0 carbs is quite misleading, and all of those little .25 and .5 and .75 carbs can really add up quick (esp when you're sticking to 20-30 per day).

Here's a way to calculate the REAL carb count: SugarBane's Hidden Carb Calculator

sorry!
