diet sodas are nasty. I don't know how anybody (even my lovely wife) can drink them. I've tried a few of the splenda sweetened ones, but they are almost, but not entirely, unlike "real" sodas. I drank Mt Dew 2-3 cans a day for most of my adult life, and diet MtDew tastes NOTHING like it. Call it diet MtMildew, and it may be closer...
So far I've been able to give up everything - as long as it's not around. I've always been a nibbler - if it's here I'll munch on it. It it isn't here I won't. I don't think about stuff I don't have. It's hard when I visit family and they have stuff around the house. I have to bring my own snacks. Thankfully, the relative we're visiting for the 4th of July is also a low carber. Yay! I have never drank a cup of coffee in my entire life. Am I the only one? I do occasionally take a swig of OJ from the jug we keep to mix with my wife's medicine. It's an orangeish flavored powder that you have to mix in 2 oz of liquid and OJ is the only thing that made it tolerable for her to drink. I have to be very disciplined or I would drink the whole jug in one sitting. (only not from concentrate stuff, don't do concentrated oj) I eat an orange every once in awhile too, because it's just wrong to not be able to eat an orange when you want one.

Juice. I really struggle not to drink it. I usually will only buy grapefruit or straight cranberry and drink a few oz at a time.

In addition to what others have mentioned: chocolate. And now that I've gotten onto 85% and above, I feel no sense that I should give it up, either -- nor do I have trouble resisting most other chocolate-flavored thingst.!

Can't really think of anything. I drink coffee and Heavy cream, But I'm ok with that. I guess Artificial sweeteners. Though technically allowed I realize they are BAD for me, but I still incorporate them in my diet.

Honestly, I can't give up anything nor will I give up anything. I just recognize that there are certain food choices that are far better for me than other food choices.

I won't give up stevia. (UNless something as natural and sweet comes along! )
![]() I love my stevia! I've given up just about everything I used to eat before, there isn't anything I CAN'T live without and make due, even my yummy organic soy and flax. I've given them up to see if my body reacts better. If there is no difference after awhile, I may go back to them, but for the foreseeable future, they're gone. |

Authentic Chicago stuffed pizza...but since I only go to Chicago a couple of times a year, I figure what the hey?! Eat up and enjoy.
Other than that....not really. All my favorite foods are totally A-OK on Atkins! Cheese, cream, mmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!As an aside, a few years ago when I was still hoodwinked by the government health gurus, I remember having an intense sadness because I realized how much I loved cheese and that I'd probably have to give it up to lose weight. I remember thinking that I wish there was just SOME way that cheese was actually healthy. And now I revel in the fact that I can eat cheese and lose weight, too. Life is good!

I too struggled and I overcame. i quit smoking every year for 7 years straight.
I am an addict and have been addicted to different substances in my life. Believe me, some much harder substances than food. It is appreciated that you not assume it has been easy for me. I have worked very hard to get where I am and that's why I'm still here. Last edited by fawn : 07-02-2008 at 08:35 AM. |

I agree with Fawn...of course I CAN give up lots of stuff, I choose not to.
For me, Atkins taught me how to eat all the stuff I really crave in the right amounts. My body type only wants to eat pasta, potatoes, bread, fruit, cheese. Followed closely by salty snacks like crackers, pretzels, etc. Induction practices gave me the opportunity to cleanse and start over, slowly incorporating foods in small amounts. Today, I find I can eat all foods in very small amounts, IF I stick to meats/eggs/dairy, good fats, green veggies 80-90% of the day. For the periods of time that I go overboard again, I go back to induction and start over. This moderate approach works better for my personality. I know better than to draw hard black lines I know I will step over if I feel too deprived. I have come to understand I need some amount of discipline; obviously when i ate all foods in the amounts that pleased me, i was 50# heavier. So, I CAN and DO choose this moderate approach. |

Over the last 6 months, I have realized that I CAN give up anything I want...which is a big milestone for me...
I used to eat all kinds of chips/dip, cookies, cake batter, fresh bread, pasta, and all other carby junk. I have found that I CANNOT eat that stuff anymore...it really jacks my stomach and bowels up (IBS trigger). I decided one day that why should I continue to suffer with IBS flare ups (when eating a known trigger) just so I can eat X food? I can say that I now have an aversion to anything carby... ![]() I am enjoying fresh fruit for the first time in my life! I never thought I would. I sometimes make LC blondies, but we end up throwing half away. I eat a few strawberries and a square of 72% dark chocolate for dessert or blueberries and Full Fat yogurt. To me, it tastes way better than the carby cake or cookie crap I used to eat. This is coming from someone who used to eat a whole large pizza in one sitting, could consume a box of tuna helper w/extra cheese in one sitting, a bag of chips and can of dip, or box of cheese its, and would eat 5 plates at a buffet. I do not make any kind of LC tuna casserole and I do not go to buffets. I had a great NSV on Sunday...we had a potluck dinner at church. I brought apple slices and cheese cubes. I ate some raw veges, meat, cheese cubes, and a few granny smith apple slices. Passed up all the desserts...they didn't even look good to me. I now know I CAN give up what ever I want...the question is WILL I.

For me I choose not to give up daily coffee, diet soda, and eating a off plan meal once every 2 weeks.
This is a woe for life and perfect restrictive eating sets me up for a serious binge. All my prior attemps were trying to live up to the perfect standard. For me , it dosen't work long term. I have a few things I enjoy, so I do and I'm at my lowest weight since my teenage years and feel great. And, I have no desire to ever eat like I did before. That keeps me on the road to success.
