With all the bacon talk...

I was wondering what kind of bacon everyone is eating? Is there one kind that is better than another? How much do you eat a day on average? Do you inspect it before purchasing or just grab any package? Do you like the fatty gristle bits better than the red meaty parts?

Sarah

I don't pretend to know the reasons why, I've just read that nitrates and nitrites are bad for you, so I've been buying uncured bacon at Trader Joe's. It's quite yummy.

I just buy the cheapest bacon that is just plain old bacon. Not maple or brown sugar or "whatever" carb and sugar laden flavor they decide to use.

For me, I ALWAYS eat at least a half pound of bacon a day. Some times I will eat a whole pound in a day if I use it for more than just breakfast.

Thanks for reading.

I have a little butcher shop in my little Hick town. The meat is local, freshly butchered, no hormones and no antibiotics.

The bacon is slab bacon with no nitrates in it. It is AWESOME!!! It's not covered in salt to hide the taste.

The bacon in the grocery store causes me to retain water. I think it's the nitrates and the salt.

This bacon gives me no problems at all and the taste is far superior.

ETA: Believe it or not, it's also cheaper. Same with the rest of their meat.

I eat turkey bacon I think it tastes better. But, i don't eat it very often because of the whole salt/ chemical thing.

We bought a pig this spring and now have a freezer full of many packages of natural smoked bacon. Infact, I thawed a package last night so I could cook it up this morning. Mmmm. . .

Anyone have ideas on where to buy nitrate-free bacon, other than Trader J's? We don't have one in our area. I'd like to recommend it to our clients, but have pretty much exhausted our local resources.

I just buy the Hormel or Oscar Mayer microwavable strips and the giant bags of bacon bits (that i use in EVERY THING) from Sam's. No TJ's around here for me to get the super ultra healthy stuff, so I settle for this and it is yummy.

You can do searches here...

Eat Wild

Local Harvest / Farmers Markets / Family Farms / CSA / Organic Food

At the Grocery stores in your area, read the labels in the bacon section. There might be some there, that you didn't know about.

Local butchers (call and ask) or at a Health food store.

I love bacon, but surprisingly, I only eat it about once per month? The nitrate thing gets me too - maybe that is why. I buy whatever is on sale I guess. This week I bought the reduced sodium bacon and it was great! (still a lot of sodium though - enough to make it taste yummy). We don't have a local trader joes, but do have a pork farm - I should look into that!

I'm about to start calling health food stores. I think I've read every label I can find.

I buy mine at Publix. It's a little pricey, but out side of induction I don't eat much bacon anyway. So, I break it down when I get home and freeze individual portions. This also assures that I dont get crazy and eat it all up quick cause I cooked the whole package lol

While I usually buy my nitrate/nitrite-free bacon at TJ's, my local Price Chopper also sells 3 different brands that are nitrate/nitrite-free. I don't remember the names of two of those brands, as all three cost $4.99 and two of them are only 8 oz. The Coleman's brand is 12 oz. so that's what I buy when I can't get to TJ's, which is where I PREFER to buy it as it's only $3.99 there for 12 oz.

Right now I buy what's on sale as long as it's not obviously sugar-cured. Nitrate free is on the to-do list but I'm not fretting over it.

Jeremy do you have a Kroger? I bought some there this morning. It is Naturally Preferred brand Hickory smoked center cut bacon. No nitrates, MSG, hormones, or antibiotics. It is a little more expensive there. 5.99 for a 10 oz. package but it beat driving across town for it.

I just finished my breakfast. . .a whole big bunch of natural bacon, with 2 eggs fried in bacon grease and butter. Mmmm. . .

Does anyone else really enjoy how their lips feel after eating a bunch of nice, fatty bacon? Or am I just weird?

Our local Costco carries Eckrich Ready Crisp All Natural Fully Cooked Uncured bacon. It's $5.69 for a 9 oz. box, but that's 56-64 slices! Always ready, I just heat it up in a frying pan as I like it crispy. I eat 2-3 slices every morning.

Yummmmm.... bacon....
