Scale obsessed

I know we have all discussed this before. I am still scale obsessed. Every morning I pee, and then weigh. Although I wil say that I no longer weigh all day long like I used to.

I've decided that the ONLY number that will count though will be my weight on my anniversary date the 15th of each month. Weights flucuate so much throughout the month that it just isn't possible for me to pick one day a week to weigh without me cheating. I know me. If I weigh more on Wednesday than I did on Tuesday, I would want to count Tuesday weight etc.

So, the 15th of every month. Hopefully, with this decision I will also stop jumping on that scale every morning.

I used to do the same thing. Now I do not even own a scale. I am trying to remember that weight is only a number and I am doing this for my health.

As long as you are feeling better and are happy with the results you have achieved then the numbers on the scale shouldn't mean as much to you.

Having said that, I DO like to track my progress so I will actually run into to a doctors office to weigh myself on the 7th of the month. (my anniversary date) Most places are cool with it, especially if it is where you normally go to see the doctor.

Good luck and thanks for reading.

I started a scale challenge thread a few weeks ago....to weigh every 4 weeks. I have been sticking to that since then, but I havent seen anything from the other ladies who joined the challenge....
think about it logically though...how much can our weight really change during a day? If you weighed 107 this morning, can you relaly drop or gain 5lbs by tomorrow morning?, doubt it. But I understand the urge to see progress.

The last time I was on Atkins I would jump on the scale every morning and again later that day after I exercised. I've cut that back to once a week. I chose Monday since then I will have to be held accountable for my weekend actions. So every Monday morning I'll get on my scale and note my weight. I dont think I could ever go a whole month without weighing. Atleast not when trying to lose weight. Believe me I went year's without weighing when I knew I weighed too much.

I have been hopping on the scale every morning but feel that is way too much. I am going to do the once a week thing but I was going to do Fridays. You convinced me I better make it Monday mornings instead.

I think we can all get too caught up with the number on the scale. Remember the idea is to lose fat not just weight.

Count me in the obsession. I only weigh myself in the mornings after peeing, not during the day or night.

Yeah, but wouldn't you want to weigh yourself more than once a month so you can get an average? How is weighing yourself once a month accurate at all?

ITA!!!! I am in my 4th week and was weighing once a week until this week and weighed 3 days in a row...didn't like ONE of the days so now today I feel all fat and bloated...Haven't changed what I am eating or it isnt close to TOM either.

I wonder if it isn't my head trying to tell me to quit!

IF you can REALLY only count that ONE day a month, GREAT but I am betting at some point your going to read something that is going to send you spiraling down emotionally!

Why do that to yourself?

I am tempted to tell DD to hide the scale and jsut weigh at the doctor's once a month! I know he will let me. I have an appt on Monday so I will see what the difference is in scales and talk w/ him about it.

I just know if I keep up w/ the every day I will lose it and not stick to this!

I weigh every morning, but then I average once a week on Mondays, and that's what I count. It's a nice balance between obsession & reasonableness

For me it really takes a lot of the power out of the ups and downs when you do it for awhile - you can see the trend (hopefully downward!) and it's much less crazy-making to see it go up for a day or three.

For example, the last 7 days looked like this:

190
190
190.2
190.8
191.2
190.4
191.8

add those together, divide by 7 (thats how you get the average)

I weigh 190.63 lbs today.

So I'm up at the moment (boo), but I'm not up the almost 2 pounds that it would look like if I was going just by today's weight vs. last Friday's.

I agree with Melissa. I don't actually keep track of my weight daily, but I do weigh daily in order to keep track of trends. My weight tends to fluctuate within about a 5 pound range, so I feel more in touch with myself and my true weight if I know where I am in a fluctuating range when I weigh myself. Otherwise, if I only weighed monthly and I happened to weigh myself on an UPWARD fluctuation day, I would be pretty upset. KWIM??

The problem with weighing daily is that some people get so fixed on the number that if it goes up a bit, say from water retention or some other cause, (Weight can vary from day to day five pounds or more for a number of reasons.) it ruins the persons day and may even cause a binge. (What’s the point, I may as well eat…………………..) Even if it doesn’t cause a binge, it can make the person feel bad about themselves and ruin their whole day.
I have know a few people who weigh daily, keep an average and are fine with the daily variance because they know the overall trend is down. If you are a person that this works for, great, if it makes you crazy and ruins your day, it is better to weight weekly or monthly. (I weigh weekly, except when TOM is visiting)

I dont understand....how would weighing every 4 weeks not be accurate? Isnt what you weigh what you weigh (except for TOM)? I mean --would you get an inaccurate reading if you wait 4 weeks, but get an accurate one if you weigh daily or weekly? Maybe I'm nto understanding the question...I guess everybody has to do what works for them, but I refuse to go batty becaue of the numbers on a scale, when I know I am doing the right thing. If I weighed every day of the week, I am sure I will get a different reading almost everyday, so why drive myself crazy? For peace of mind, I depend more on what I see in the mirror, how I feel and how my clothes feel and for me, thats been going good so far.

I can get scale obsessed. At the minute, I'm trying to only weigh on the 1st of each month. But I have sneaked on a couple of times in June (and I'm losing again after a slow May! Yay.)

In July I am going to weigh daily, and plot it on a chart in a spreadsheet. I think that will show me just how meaningless daily fluctuations are as long as the trend is downwards. I have a digital scale, so it's easy to get the exact figure.

Thanks!

It really is amazing. If I was going by my daily numbers, think how upset I would've been when it went UP to 200 for that one day right after I started?!

MsSeattleSlim, you have just inspired me to go out and buy a digital scale
What fun to have a nice little chart to look at! I pretty much have a chart in my head, but I would love to be able to plot it out and actually look at it. What a great idea!

I used to be massive scale-obsessed. I'm sure people on this board can testify to that about me!!

So I went two months without getting on & then got on-when I decided to start focusing on fat loss again (since I have to put myself in a calorie deficit for this). So now, I just get on once a week so I can adjust my calories as needed based on the number on the scale. But that's the only reason I use it.

It no longer has any power over me. The number no longer has any power over me. If I'm up a pound or two or I'm down a pound or two, then I'm okay with that-as long as my inches keep going down. I use it as my guide now-not my god.

Dyan

I really need to put my scale away. I am one of those that hops on everyday and then obsesses about the numbers. I "officially" weigh-in Saturday mornings, but this everyday thing is driving me crazy. I don't know why I do it to myself.
