Dose the texture of the noodles stand in well for the rice? I love sushi and had to just eat sashimi when out to dinner with friends last night.

Wow. Those look yummy. I would never have thought you could make sushi rolls out of Shirataki. They must have been very difficult to roll with the noodles being so slippery.

Shirataki, Nori, and SPAM --

You can get the noodles either at Trader Joes or at an Asian market in the tofu section.

The conistancy isn't like rice, but does provide the same type of filler that rice does.

The noodles end up just being a little squishy rather than slippery after you dry them off with a paper towel.

I kind of got the idea from Spam Masubi that you would get at a Hawaiian fast food place. I just needed a neutral filler that would act like rice does.

Anthony Bourdain just had a show on spam sushi. he wasn't too keen at first but really liked it. my problem has been replacing the rice. I was going to resign myself to using brown rice. i even tried the cauli rice but it just didn't taste "right". I will have to look for these for sure if it means I can have sushi again!!!

What would you consider a good spam substitute? Those pieces are TINY, and if you have a hankering for SPAM sushi (a big part of SUSHI culture in some places) I can't think personally of anything else quite like it....

I just tried Spam because it was fast. I might try real Shrimp, Crab or Bacon next time. Thanks for all your suggestions. I'll post pics when she does it again. I might also put in some shredded carrots. She mentioned that they look a little small to her and that she might put in a larger amount of each and see how it works

I used the tofu based Shirataki noodles. I hated the yam ones. Yuck!!! The Tofu ones taste just like the Asian vermicelli noodles.
