I love the plain pork skins! I don't buy the seasoned kind because of the msg. I love them for dips, and nachos and anything I used a chip and cracker for!
I remember Paula Deen making some and I think she baked hers. I don't remember the temps or for how long, but it look nice and crispy.
I can't find the recipe because it was at least 2 years old.

One of my favorite snacks in the whole world are homemade pork rinds, otherwise known as

CHICHARONES

to us Cuban folk.

I'm tellin' you folks. These babies are the REAL DEAL. Of course I have the luxury (live in Tampa) of going to my local Cuban Market and picking some up fresh. Fried in their own fat, with bits of pork still attached! Ohhhhhh how my mouth is watering!

We get a few maybe once a month and they're to DIE for!

You can often find them in latin markets, just be sure to know what they're frying them in. This certainly determines how often I allow myself this yummy treat.

I had one out of a bag a few years ago. Doesn't even compare. And I would certainly call mine a 'healthy' occasional treat. No additives or flavors. Just real meat and fat.

(Seriously contemplating getting in my car for some chicharones!)

My kids won't stay out of my pork rinds, they are awesome:

ingredients:

pork rinds, lard, salt and smoke flavor.

I am not a fan of the smoke flavor because it obviously is not natural, but if my kids want chips or snacks I would rather feed them these than microwave popcorn, cheetos or doritos.

I eat them occasionally.. maybe 1-2 times a week and I can only eat a handful (because I get a lot of fat elsewhere in my diet IYKWIM)

the brand I get are Frito Lay Baken-ets

anyone want to take a dare? pour some cinammon, splenda and heavy cream on some plain ones and eat them like cereal.

really.

Don't. Even. Go. There.

(Now that's temptation. I've got cream, xylitol, cinnamon...all I need are the pork rinds.)

Been there, done that and it's not half bad.

SOFRESH'S MOCK CINNAMON TOAST CRUNCH
3 tablespoons heavy cream
2 tablespoons water
1-2 tablespoons granular Splenda or equivalent liquid Splenda
1/2-1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 ounce coarsely crushed pork rinds, or enough to fill the bowl

Pour the cream, water and Splenda in the bottom of a cereal bowl; stir well. Stir in the cinnamon. Don't worry if the cinnamon clumps up a bit. Add the pork rinds and stir until completely moistened. Eat quickly with a spoon before it gets too soggy.

Makes 1 serving

With granular Splenda:
Per Serving: 252 Calories; 22g Fat; 13g Protein; 6g Carbohydrate; 1g Dietary Fiber; 5g Net Carbs

With liquid Splenda:
Per Serving: 240 Calories; 22g Fat; 13g Protein; 3g Carbohydrate; 1g Dietary Fiber; 2g Net Carbs

MOCK CINNAMON TOAST CRUNCH VARIATION
1 tablespoon heavy cream
1/4 cup water
2 tablespoons vanilla Da Vinci sugar free syrup
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 ounce coarsely crushed pork rinds, or enough to fill the bowl

Make just like the above recipe. This version has less carbs and fat than the original and tastes just the same.

Per Serving: 136 Calories; 11g Fat; 13g Protein; 2g Carbohydrate; 1g Dietary Fiber; 1g Net Carbs

Oh my. I love cinnamon toast crunch. It's like my 3rd favorite cereal, behind Cap'n Crunch and Fruity Pebbles.

Oh yeah, we got fresh chicharrones here too at several Mexican stores. They make their own fresh. I've never had them because of all the flies I see flying on top of them.

It actually IS natural, if you consider smoke a natural substance - they just condense the steam from it as it goes up through a coil, then drips down into a container to collect it.

I don't find it any more objectionable than my own homemade smoked meats or grilled stuff.

woot good to know!

I do use liquid smoke in my BBQ sauce, and it only has mesquite natural smoke flavor, vinegar, caramel color, molasses and natural flavor.

i never thought to put the 2 together.

Love, love, love pork rind nachos.

Tried the pork rind french toast once and about hurled. Wonder if I could stomach the pork rind as cereal gig?

Thanks. I'll remember to make a small bowl and eat it fast. LOL

I've done it a couple of different ways:

Pork rinds, cookie sheet, taco meat, cheddar cheese. Melt under the broiler and add tomatoes, shredded lettuce, sour cream.

Pork rinds in the microwave on a plate with the same ingredients.

Pork rinds with just cheddar cheese to melt.

Man, wish I had some pork rinds now.
