How do we lose fat from out bodies? Where does it go?

So where does it go? Does a little bit leave on every stinky ketosis breath? No. Does fat leave our body through urine when we pee? No the kidneys don't process fat. I know when we poo! No. Unless you have a digestive disorder aka problems with the intestine, liver, pancreas etc or are on a medication. Oily BMs are not normal--see your doctor.

We burn fat as energy. The fat is broken down into usable components that the body uses as fuel just like our car burns gasoline. The fat on your body is energy in reserve waiting to be used. Your belly pouch is like the oil reserves in Alaska. Your bubble butt is the Middle East. One bat wing is Canada and the other is Venezuela. Back fat is undiscovered country.

So how does this miracle happen?

1 - Your are moving around working, digesting or exercising and you body needs to fuel your muscles and your brain and your organs.
2 - Your body looks around for some carbs stored as glycogen because carbs are really easy to turn right into energy. Bam. The body doesn't want to use the fat! It is too much work and it wants to save it for the next famine or plague or whatever.
3 - After a while the body has burned the carbs, it has turned all the glycogen in your muscles and your liver back into glucose and the body is on empty. Now it is forced to get it's energy from elsewhere so it turns to the fat cells and tells them to give it up.
4 - The body lets lose some hormones which makes the fat cells give up fatty acids and glycerol.
5 - The fatty acids and glycerol go out into the blood stream and after floating around for a while, finally get to the liver where they are turned into glucose.
6. The body burns the glucose and we shrink cause there is a little less fat than there was yesterday.

PS if you don't give it enough carb or fat to burn it will start breaking down your muscles.

All this time I thought I was peeing the fat away with these mass quantities of water I was drinking. . . .

I love your Henry Ford quote. I use one myself.

I alway thought unused fat passed through the body.

On LC, we take in lots of fat. I'm not active enough to burn fat stores AND the fat I'm taking in via diet.

Please explain.

just sitting there burns fat.

your heart burns fat (ketones) as it pumps, your brain burns fat (ketones) to function, you burn fat lifting your arm up to use the remote control.

Just like a car cannot idle 24 hours a day without gas.. we cannot idle either without the fuel (fat).

of course we need protein too, our bodies need a certain amount to maintain our muscle/lean body mass.. so be sure to include that or your body will start to use the muscle instead if it is not available via diet. But do not overdo the proteins either, any amount over and above what your body needs, will get converted to glucose by the liver.. which in essence is no different than eating carbs.

It does not work like as if the excess fat we eat sits around your waist... excess ketones will be released in your urine, sweat and breath, it does NOT get packed around your waist as an energy store, that store only gets stocked with glucose!

Well I personally enjoyed the GEOGRAPHY lesson the best, although I don't know if the people in Alaska would like to be compared to my belly fat or if Canadians want to be compared to bat wings. As far as the Middle East is concerned, maybe we should leave them out of the geography lesson-- nuff said.

Fat cannot be turned into glucose! It is turned into ketones and used for energy. Ketones in the urine are "proof" that we are indeed using fat for fuel instead of glucose.

You don't lose your fat. Fat cells decrease or increase but they never go away.

No but the glycerol portion of fat does-this is gluconeogenesis. Ketones spilled in the urine means that your body is not utilizing these particular ketones for energy-you are spilling them in your urine. This is why the stix never turn purple for some folks-their bodies utilize ketones more efficiently for fuel than others and they don't spill as much in their urine.

I erred.
I re-read Dr. A's book and you are correct, stored fat IS turned into glucose for energy use.

You all are going to drive me insane!

I suppose fat CAN be turned into glucose. But isn't the whole idea here to convert fat to kenones and use the ketones for fuel?

And if so, why on earth would the body turn fat into glucose!?
