fish oil v flaxseed oil v cod liver oil

I can't decide which one to take. The fish oil capsules I have found are all too big- the cod liver oil is smaller but I have taken Accutane in the past so I worry about the risk of too much vitamin A - and I wasn't sure if the flaxseed oil was as good as the other 2. I also wouldn't mind whichever one helps the most with anxiety and depression. What are your thoughts?

Flax seed oil makes my skin and hair look glowing and I feel so healthy.
I didn't like the fish burps from fish oil.

The fish oil I was taking never gave me the fish burps- otherwise I would not take it. I agree for sure with that side effect being a deal breaker.

Now..doing some research myself..I am reading that for depression and anxiety that fish oil is better I just don't know. I guess it will depend on which one I can find in a smaller capsule.

I was told by a nutrition doc that the fish oil is more efficient than the flax oil because flax oil needs an extra step to be useable by the body whereas the fish oil can be utilized immediately.

Most people I know that take the flax oil do so because they're vegetarian or vegan.

Personally, I have found the fish oil capsules to help with my depression. My DH swears it helps with his ADHD.

If you can't find a smaller capsule, try looking for Coromega Omega-3 Fish Oil. It comes in Orange, Orange-Chocolate, and Lemon Lime, in packets kind of like ketchup. You just squeeze the packet and either take it straight, or put it in something (yogurt, etc).

The fish burps are because the capsule is breaking down too soon in your digetstive tract.

Look for "enteric coated" -- the coating keeps it intact longer, so no fish burps.

FYI, Costco sells a good, enteric coated, powerful 1xday capsule. But, it's pretty large. Goes down easily, though!

Thanks for the info!! I did read something like that about the flax oil. Something about the nutrient needed to help with anxiety and depression will go where your body needs it elsewhere first-so you may not get as many benefits as the fish oil.

I don't know if I can do those packets- it just sounds really gross. There has to be a smaller capsule out there somewhere.

I take NSI brand 'Total EFA' or Health From the Sun brand (also Total EFA). Has all the oils in them. And I have a friend who sticks a pin into the capsule, and 'sandwiches' the oil...she puts Crystal light or anything with fruity taste in the glass..about 2 ounces, put the oil on that, pour another 2 ounces liquid..gulp it down.

ghelen, I'm so glad you asked this question because I've been wondering the exact same thing. I've heard Fawn state that she takes cod liver oil. I went to buy some this weekend and it didn't really have the same profile as the fish oil supplements, and didn't say anything about Omega 3's, so I was worried about taking it instead of fish oil capsules. So I left the store empty-handed.

So here are my basic questions:

* Does cod liver oil deliver the same benefits as fish oil capsules?
* If not, what dosage of fish oil supplements should I be taking and what
are the preferred brands
* Is flaxseed oil superior to both of these sources, or should we take
both?

Sorry to ask so many questions!

I started taking Cod Liver Oil and get terrible wake you up at night heartburn. and lots of burps now that I think of it.

I stopped taking it and now three weeks later still have bad heartburn. I do not know if it is coincidence but I have to go to the MD Friday and have it checked out. I have not had heart burn like this since I lost all my weight and even though I am up 10 lbs I can't believe my weight is the final factor.

I don 't know the difference in all those oils but I take Hemp Seed Oil because it has the highest rating of Omega 3-6-9's of all the oils out there on the market.

They are all different respectfully

Personally, I take Cod Liver Oil as it delivers omega 3's as well as Vitamin A and the best D conversion. The fatty acid composition carries EHA and DPA......these, we are deficient in as a society.

My flax oil I consume mixed with 1/2 cup of organic cottage cheese then add coconut water and kefir. I blend the flax and cottage cheese first into a paste as the combination of the two are carried directly to the cells this way (google Johanna budwig for this information....it's my way of preventing cancer as well as getting the benefits from flax)

This is a very big issue, they're all different and I encourage you to spend some time researching it.

Most all of the supplements we use arethe NSI brand. I know that before I switched over to their cod liver oil, I was using a fish oil of that brand that were small capsules. You may want to check those out.

Be especially careful with fish oil supplements. Many many are not tested and are dirty. If you purchase nothing else with safety claim, purchase your fish oils from a reputable company.
