FIBER options that really work

Hey everybody - quick question for you seasoned L.C. vets out there......What are the best options for adding fiber to one's diet when doing Atkins or South Beach? I've done Atkins before and had great success with the plan, but recall that I had to take some sort of fiber supplement which was only mildly helpful......if you catch my drift. I currently eat a high fiber diet in which my fiber consumption is derived from actual foods (by this I mean food - not supplements) like Fruit and whole grains and am worried that my system will react harshly when I dive headfirst into Atkins and am unable to eat my beloved fruit, etc. Thanks in advance for the favor of your reply....my need for fiber is really the only thing preventing me from embarking on my L.C. journey so I'm anxious to hear your suggestions.

For me, I use psyllium just as Dr. Atkins advises. I pop 6 capsules at night, every night, and I have no problems whatsoever. I find that that along with my coconut oil daily helps tremendously. Dr. A also suggests flax I believe. That is something that can be sprinkled on a salad or eaten in the form of a muffin. I seriously would check out those links that Allie posted--very good info.

About a tablespoon of plain Psyllium makes for a very peaceful time the next day. I don't bloat or cramp.

If I don't take the fiber, I will bloat and cramp. I have some digestive issues due to medication.

BTW, be aware that the "name" brand psyllium fibers tend to have a lot of added maltodextrin (filler starch) aspartame, sugar, and artificial colors. I checked at Walmart and they didn't have one suitable product.

I got the plain stuff at a local health food store.

Same here. Or a strong cup of coffee!

Flax muffins feel like a rock in my stomach.

Start Date: 3/24/08 & Every Day!
1 - I add 1 heaping Tbsp of Organic Psyllium Husk Powder to my EC PP shake each day.
(the capsules did NOTHING for me)

2 - I add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of Bob's RedMill flaxseed meal (regular or golden) to everything I bake.

3 - Also, I drink a cup (it's like hot tea) of Peter Giilham's Natural Calm (magnesium citrate ~ raspberry lemon flavor) each night before bed. THIS has really done the trick for me, and believe me, I have BM "'issues" and have tried EVERYTHING.

4 - I think EVCO helps too.

5 - organic mixed berries will be the FIRST thing I add back in!

XO,
HB

For me, two cups of straight coffee followed by a long run session does the trick.

I do have that berry Metamucil though, for emergencies. It's not too bad.

Magnesium Citrate once daily works like a charm. Psyllium and flax do bad things to my intestines, but give it a try and see for yourself! Lots of ideas here. Good luck!

Fibercon...2 at night, always works for me. Be sure to drink with a full glass of water, though...it will swell and you want to make sure it's in your system, when it swells (not in your throat).

Fiber only makes me bloat. I take 500mg of magnesium everyday and everything is fine now.
